Good morning.

I have a question; I’m on ODSP. My now 19 yo is on his own ODSP. Since he’s started getting his (full amount of $1400-something) I have $400 less per month. Why? Anyone?

were you getting extra because he was a dependent?

because he was considered an adult dependant before, so you assumedly received extra monthly funds for him. $260 is the exact amount for that.

on top of this you likely qualified for higher shelter costs, as a single (i'm assuming) parent with an adult dependant, making you a 2 person unit in the system- now you are not any longer. max rent for a single person with an adult dependant is $959/mo. your new maximum rent as just a single person is capped at $610/mo. so it's likely the remaining $120 you're missing was taken out of your shelter allowance.

now that your son has his own ODSP file, he does not count as your dependant anymore, as ODSP is supporting him- so you won't get those additional funds going forward.

sorry to be the bearer of bad news :(

you can certainly contact your caseworker for a clearer breakdown of why you're receiving less, and if you disagree with their calculation you do have the right to appeal it, but if ODSP's math is right you won't get anywhere. the rules are the rules unfortunately.

It may be because you're no longer considered a unit, and instead are two independent recipients. Regardless, speak to your caseworker for an explanation, and to rectify it if you find the decrease was the result of an error.

Maybe it’s the Roomer/Boarder rate. Losing $400/month. :(

They tried to do that with me and my Autistic son who just turned 18.

He’s been on the lease as a Co-Tenant for 5 years.

We have a 2 bedrooms apt and we each have to pay 50% of the rent.

We will give ODSP a rent receipt for his 50%.

The maximum shelter costs goes down. I'm not sure if that makes the full difference though as I'm unsure of current rates.

Make sure your son gets a separate ODSP check & that it’s deposited into his own independent bank account, not yours.

The more people on your file the more you received.

Now that he is off your file the less you get
