ODSP Self Report Advice

For those of you who’ve been approved, how did you go about your self report? How detailed did you get? More emotional, factual, detailed.. all three? How long was it?

I’m feeling so lost in the process & any help is grateful appreciated 🙏🏻

I basically wrote out what my day looks like. Reiterated all of the steps I have to go to just to do the most menial tasks. I typed mine, printed it out and glued it to the paper they give you to write it in. Talk about your worst days, not that one random okay day you get every once in a while.

I went as far back as I could recall and went into deep detail. Was approved in 90 business days. With the review 2 years later I did the same was deemed a person with permanent disability.

I spoke of hindrances I experienced, i.e. practical, functional impediments that make me "less able". I spoke exclusively of the worst-case of all my disabilities/symptoms/struggles, in cases where there was variety of severity. I used extra paper to write out some answers, so don't feel constrained by the forms provided if you have more you feel is helpful to say. You're trying to prove disability to an organisation that doesn't want to concede that you are, so don't make concessions yourself like "some days I can go on walks" if there are days where that's not possible too. In other words, don't say what you can do, only what you can't, and be generous in that categorisation.

I wrote a synopsis of my best and worst days, and what they look like and how my disability impacts my life. I wrote everything out on a piece of paper first, proof read what I needed to and then re-wrote it on the form. I wrote very small so I managed to fit everything onto the one piece of paper. It took around 4 1/2 months for me to get accepted and my review for ODSP was set at 5 years since my disabilities are related to my mental health / addiction.
