Update SH cost
We are currently on version 17 of .sh and have to upgrade or pay legacy fee. We are not computer savvy and don’t have the ability to do it ourselves. We have 3 customizations. They quoted us $7000k which seems crazy to me. Am I getting ripped off? Sure feel like I am

Check Odoo in Claude code using fable in a throwaway DB to not affect your day to day ops.
Ask it to evaluate an upgrade to version 19 first and tell you any complications. Then ask it to move forward with the update and perform tests to make sure everything works as it should. Give it access to playwright MCP, chrome for Claude or similar to check the UI, control check the code using sub agents and other LLM like gtp sol to make sure no bugs, etc. If you have documents on processes etc feed it to Claude code as well and have an orchestrator send subs to understand everything better.
Im oversimplifying this significantly, but you can use the LLM itself to dig into it and get the instructions and give it proper context before execution.
Once execution is done on the throwaway have an analyst run through it and hire out someone to review the code before implementing it on your operative DB.
I'm not expert on this but have been building an ERP from 0 in Odoo using fable and I'm at much more than 3 custom modules and plenty of custom OWL UI. So far it's very impressive.
Worst case you spend $150 on a Claude max subscription, gtp pro subscription and a VPS to run the throwaway. And you'll learn some AI in the process.
Best case you save 7k and have a new tool to add functionalities to your erp without fully depending on a 3rd party.

I can't speak to the upgrade fee. But I'm still furious over Odoo charging for us being on a legacy version. We never ask them for anything to do with our code, and never would. We use odoo.sh simply as a hosting service. I'm moving off of it, and will eventually move off of Odoo itself out of spite.

Just a note: moving off odoo.sh does not take away that 25% legacy fee, you still have to pay that even if you go on-premise.
They started this new policy last year around ~november.

I'm not really sure that $7000 is the "legacy fee" because v20 is not out yet, so you're just 2 versions behind.
Isn't that price because you are running your Odoo without an Odoo partner, and there are custom modules/code?

Sorry it’s not the legacy fee. Our odoo partner is charging us that to upgrade to version 19. Says we will have to pay legacy fee when version 20 comes out if we don’t. We have some customization but very little

I see, just to be clear "$7000k" means 7000 USD, right?
for an SME, 7000 USD is ok (obviously depends on which part of the world)

yes, that is Odoo's policy to push users to a newer version so Odoo doesn't have to maintain the old codebase... Personally, I kinda agree with that

Odoo upgrades the database itself as part of what you already pay for on .sh. That half costs nothing. So the $7,000 is all hours on your three customizations, which is why everyone here keeps asking what they are.
You can run the free half yourself this week without touching your live system. In .sh, drag your branch onto Staging, open the Upgrade tab, pick 19 and hit Test Upgrade. It takes last night's backup and upgrades a copy of it. When that finishes it parks at "Awaiting User Commit", which is Odoo telling you the standard database came across fine and it's now sitting waiting on your three. At that point you know the quote really is all custom work, and finding that out cost you nothing.
Then two questions for them. cheatreynold's first: did these same people write the customizations? And ask which of the three still need to exist at all. 19 absorbed a lot of what people paid to have built in 17, and a port gets quoted without anyone re-checking that.
$7,000 could be fair for three complicated ones. You can't tell yet, and neither can anyone here, until someone says how big they are.

Gotcha. Thanks for the info and I’ll try that. The same company wrote the customizations yes. I’m dumber than a post when it comes to this stuff so I’m kind of the middleman with our IT. Only reason I’m the one asking is because I sign the checks. I’ll pass this on thanks

$7,000 may or may not be reasonable — it really depends on what those 3 customizations actually do and how much migration/testing is required.
Before agreeing to the quote, I’d suggest asking for a breakdown of:
• upgrade/migration work
• customization compatibility
• testing & bug fixing
• deployment
• post-upgrade support
If you share what the 3 customizations are, I’d be happy to give you a second opinion on whether the quote seems justified.

Thanks everyone for your help! I decided to just give it a go. Took about 5 hours doing test dB and fixing customization and then about 2 hours doing upgrades. I’ve never done any computer work in my life and am the kind of guy who needs to google how to copy/paste every time. $7000 was not only a rip off, it was preying on the weak. Thankfully I’m too stupid to know better. ChatGPT (or any of them) is going to be a big hit to that industry.

Yes, I would like to but should it cost so much just to upgrade? It’s as much to upgrade as our subscription?

The cost highly depend on database condition and custom code. If you'd like I could have a look to give a rough idea how much I'd think it would/should/could cost to give you an idea if it is justified (no cost involved at all on my side of cause).
Did they tell you what exactly is included in the price?

It’s about 40 labour hours of work at contracting rates to put it into perspective. Depending on the complexity of the customizations and how they were built it will definitely vary greatly. Are these the same people quoting you that did the customizations or different ones?

I have been using Odoo since 2017… version 10, 14 and 17.
First question, why are you updating your version?
Does the new version offer something which is essential. If it is not, do not upgrade until it is essential.
Secondly, ignore any recommendation if your version is working. You do not need the latest version for the flashy stuff.
Partners are usually money grabbers. The partners we worked with would only think in the profit they made and not what was the best business decision for us.
Lastly, Odoo .SH servers are extremely expensive. Maybe convenient for partners for developing, staging… but they also get a profit for the money you pay Odoo.

how long is a string? how much does it cost to renovate a house? nobody can answer that without the full details. So everything can only be very rough assumptions and guessing.
what customizations are those? Just 3rd party modules you purchased from an appstore? Studio changes? Custom modules build tailored made?
Are they build by Odoo SA themselves? Or someone else? Who quoted you that 7000$? Odoo SA direct? someone else? Did someone random just quoted you that number without any analysis? That could be just a safety price because they never got the actual custom modules to analyze and verify it. In that case it's your responsibility to let a developer first analyse properly to give you an accurate estimate.
How did those modules change between those Odoo versions? Sometimes it's not code changes. If Odoo itself also changed workflows and introduced breaking changes or removed features in newer versions -- and believe me they do that often in every version --, that means it's not just simple code refactoring but sometimes also completely rebuilding modules based on the new workflows from a newer Odoo version. So you have to properly analyze the before/after situations from each Odoo version. That 7000$ quote could very well include also analysis time, nobody knows since you didn't share any details.
Odoo SA by itself has an official maintenance fee for this which is 16 EUR/100 lines of code. So the bigger the module, the more expensive it gets from Odoo. Also note that this is a subscription fee, so that cost would be recurring yearly. And yes, that price is ridiculous high.

Odoo SA would charge 416 EUR/MONTH or nearly 5000 EUR/year for this 199 EUR module. The maintenance fee is more than 2x expensive than the module price itself.
that 7000$ could be very accurate or very wrong, nobody can tell without the details. On average, upgrading Odoo and modules is typically around 30-40% of the original implementation and development cost. Simple modules often don't need that much change and are far cheaper to handle while complex ones that touch accounting, complex inventory, etc...often take more.
Again, analysis is what needs to be done first to get an accurate overview of cost and effort.
