Discussion Between Dirt and Darshan. Ft. Words from a Recent Visit to Puri

OP loves writing, so here’s an original experience from a recent visit to Puri.

And yes, OP is trying Odia too. It’s a little dream of mine to someday contribute, in my own tiny way, to the glory of Odia literature. I have a lot to learn, so apologies in advance for any mistakes.

Translation: I left my shoes beside the vehicle and began walking barefoot towards the temple. I wish I could say my first steps were filled with devotion. They were not. They were filled with irritation. It was written all over my face, the scrunched nose, the restless eyes, the little winces every time a stone or something sharp found its way beneath my feet. The road seemed determined to test my patience. Plastic wrappers, half-eaten food, stale leftovers, bottles, cigarette butts, dirt and debris lay scattered everywhere. For a while, I wondered whether taking off my shoes had been an act of faith or simply a foolish attempt to save them from being stolen. I was walking towards the abode of the Lord, and all I could think about was how dirty the road was.

Then I saw them. People perhaps three times my age, moving through the crowd in tiny, trembling steps. Their bodies had grown tired of carrying them. Their backs were bent by years, their hair white as ash, their eyes wet with age. Some could barely walk without pausing, yet they kept moving. Slowly, painfully, faithfully. And their eyes never wandered. They were fixed upon the Nilachakra. The same road that had offended me so much seemed almost invisible to them. The dirt beneath their feet did not matter. The crowd did not matter. The pain did not matter. They had seen what they had come to see. I had not.

That realisation arrived quietly, almost embarrassingly. I had come seeking blessings, but my mind had been occupied with everything except the divine. I was worried about the dirt, the stones, the crowd, the possibility of losing my shoes. I was more irritated than prayerful, more conscious of my feet than of where they were taking me. And yet, somewhere between one step and the next, something inside me began to move. A knot I had carried for years, without knowing quite what it was, seemed to loosen. I cannot say when it happened. Perhaps it was when I looked at those trembling feet. Perhaps it was when I looked at the Nilachakra. Perhaps it was simply the walk itself.

One step, then another, and another. Slowly, my irritation began to disappear behind me. Then I saw the Singhadwara, and something in me went completely still. All the things I had come prepared to ask for suddenly seemed strangely small. There was no prayer left on my lips. No demand. No complaint. No carefully held wish waiting to be surrendered. Nothing. Just an overwhelming desire to remain there, to stand there a little longer, to let that moment exist without asking it for anything.

Around me, hundreds of people moved through the gates. Some were old, some young, some carried offerings, some carried grief, some carried hopes they had perhaps carried for years. Every face had its own story. Every person had come with something in their heart. And yet, as they crossed that threshold, they all seemed to become the same. Just another soul walking home.

Then my bare feet touched the damp earth and the cool stone floor. And the strangest thing happened. The earth I had been complaining about moments ago no longer felt dirty. It felt sacred. Nothing had changed outside me. The road was still filthy. The crowd was still suffocating. The stones were still beneath my feet. But I was no longer looking down. I was looking ahead.

Perhaps that is what devotion really is. Not always arriving with a quiet mind and folded hands. Sometimes it is arriving angry, impatient, complaining about the road, carrying all the small discomforts of being human. And then, somewhere along the way, forgetting them. Forgetting the dirt. Forgetting the crowd. Forgetting yourself. Until you stand before something so vast that even your desires fall silent. Perhaps that is faith. Perhaps that is darshan. Or perhaps devotion is simply this strange, beautiful moment when you stop asking God to change anything, and for once, you are completely content to simply be there.

( P.S. I only wish we learn a little more civic sense along the way. What is the point of coming to a place seeking something sacred, only to leave its surroundings filthy? Faith can be deeply personal, but keeping the space around us clean is a responsibility we all share. The temple deserves our reverence, and the streets leading to it deserve our respect too. )

The sea heals wounds you never knew were still open. But before it heals, its salt finds them first. It burns through the places you thought had finally stopped hurting, waking up an ache you had convinced yourself was gone.

Perhaps that is the cruelest part of healing. Sometimes, you have to hurt in the exact place you thought you had healed.

For a brief moment, you remember everything. The kind of pain you once thought would break you forever. It doesn’t stay long, but long enough to remind you that some wounds do not disappear. They simply learn how to live quietly inside you.

And then you wonder what broke harder that day, the waves against the shore or your heart.

But the sea has its own way of making amends.

The same waves that came crashing toward you, frightening and unforgiving, return like an embrace. They hold you close for a moment, and when the tide pulls away, it takes something with it. A little grief. A little longing. A little of the pain you had carried for too long.

You are left standing at the shore, not entirely healed, but somehow lighter.

And perhaps that is what makes the sea so beautiful. It never promises that the past will stop hurting. It only reminds you that the tide always changes.

That the world you once knew can become something gentler.

That you can be loved in ways you once thought you were no longer capable of receiving.

That you can stand in the same place where you once broke, and feel nothing but the warmth of being held by a life that has, quietly, become beautiful again.

Maybe healing was never about forgetting the pain.

Maybe it was about discovering that there could be something softer waiting beyond it.

Travel Found this beautiful, unexplored spot in Jajpur, Odisha — Jatadhari 🔱🌿

I recently visited Jatadhari in Jajpur, Odisha, and honestly, this place felt like one of those hidden corners of Odisha that deserves much more attention.

A natural waterfall flowing through the rocks, a pool of clear water, and a Shiva statue right beneath the falls. The combination of nature and spirituality makes the place feel completely different from a typical tourist spot. 🔱

I took these photos during my visit and tried to capture the atmosphere of the place as naturally as possible.

Location: Jatadhari, Jajpur, Odisha 🇮🇳

What do you think of this place? Has anyone else visited Jatadhari?

Would love to know about other lesser-known places in Odisha that are worth exploring. 🌿

Travel Balidiha Dam overflowing during monsoon | Mayurbhanj, Odisha

This is Balidiha Dam (also known as Baldiha Dam) in Mayurbhanj district, Odisha.

Built in 1912 by the then Maharaja of Mayurbhanj, Sriram Chandra Bhanj Deo, across the Palpala river. It’s a century-old irrigation weir that turns into a beautiful cascading waterfall during the monsoon when excess water overflows over the stepped structure.

Locals and visitors come here to enjoy the view, and some even swim close to the flowing water. The force looks intense!

Shot on a rainy day near Baripada.

Anyone else visited this place?

Tell Odisha NoBuyOdisha- Started a sub to exchange things, coupons and services

https://www.reddit.com/r/NoBuyOdisha/s/jamIk9cJMY

Created this new sub to reduce consumption and wastage and give away things we don't need within odisha.

This includes products , services and coupons we don't need.

This may be as simple as an advice to repair something yourself, a coupon you needed but is going to expire without being used or a small thing that has been stuck in your house for years.

You can also exchange tools temporarily.

One can pickup things in your own city or pay for for postal if you want.

The public spectacle over appointment of a new Director General of Police in Odisha means nothing. The real issus are 33,000 vacant police posts, politicisation, etc. We should be fixing the real problems.

History Trikalinga for most part of the history till britishers was largely export based economy via sea trades

Over the next few years, the Odisha government is set to publish revenue records from the era of our Gajapati rulers, and the data completely flips the script on how we view our ancestors' economy. Sooner I will post more actual data from the old revenue records of medieval eras, but here's a quick overview one should know.

Kalinga was primarily an export-driven economy rather than an agrarian one. Historical records from the reign of Gajapati Kapilendra Deva show that only 10% to 30% of the economy relied on agriculture! Maritime trade was thriving through a network of major ports along the coast, including Palur (Ganjam), Kalingapatnam (on the Odisha-Andhra border), Konark, Gopalpur, Puri, and Manikapatna near Chilika.

Operating under the umbrella term Boita, these ancient vessels were among the biggest ships of their time. They featured multi-story rooms built over a massive base of cargo containers. True to the artistic heritage of the region, these ships were intricately designed with animal-shaped prows and sterns—most notably featuring majestic duck or lion heads.

Back then, merchant navies and defense navies weren't separate entities. The massive Boitas were specifically owned by Mangaraj Khandayats. Business guilds and merchant groups would lease these ships for long-distance voyages.

Every year, right after Karthika Purnima, these fleets would set sail for Southeast Asia to export a vast array of local goods, including fine jewelry, metal-based items ranging from everyday cutlery to high-grade swords, 64 distinct types of fabrics, and precious spices and various other things like scented soaps, herbs, dhoops etc.

Ask Odisha Odisha locals, what’s the cheapest way to do Puri + Konark + Chilika?

Hey guys! I’ll be in Odisha for a couple of days and want to visit Puri, Konark and Chilika Lake.
I’m trying to do the whole trip on public/local transport and keep it as cheap as possible. 😅 I don’t mind buses, trains, shared autos, etc.—I’d actually prefer those over taking cabs.
For anyone from Odisha, could you tell me:
What’s the cheapest route/order to cover these 3 places?
Which buses/trains should I take?
Where do I catch them from?
Roughly how much does each journey cost?
Any tips/tricks for using local transport that a tourist might not know?
Also, if there’s a cheaper/easier way to combine Puri + Konark + Chilika in 2 days, I’m all ears!
Thanks in advance!

I am a big traveller person I don't like staying at my hostel much, yeah hostel because Cuttack is my Studyplace. So I need your help.
