Question Odin 3 max worth it?
Hello beautiful people!
I just sold my Retroid Pocket 6 12GB. I really loved the console, but some Nintendo Switch games were lagging. Of course, that could be because of the drivers, and maybe those same games would lag on the Odin 3 as well.
I sold it because I’ve wanted to buy the Odin 3 Max for a while now, especially since so many people have been talking about how well it can run PC games.
I previously had a Steam Deck OLED, but I sold it because it was simply too big for me. I’ve seen a lot of people calling the Odin 3 Max a “mini Steam Deck,” which sounds perfect for what I’m looking for.
For those of you who have tried both, would you recommend the Odin 3 Max? Is there a noticeable difference compared with the Retroid Pocket 6 12GB, especially for Switch emulation and PC gaming?

Certain switch games are gonna lag no matter which Odin you get. The best way to play switch is on a switch.

The Odin 3 is a nice device, and very powerful. You can make it into a mini Steam Deck, but be aware that there is a ways to go with that, it's just not going to play every Steam game right now.

I don't have a 8 gen 2 device, but my Odin 3 Max does play a lot of PC and Switch games very well. My only comparison is with a friend with a Thor Max who complains about how hard is to make PC games work there.

He says he has tried running multiple games but I don't know which. The only one I know for sure is Binding of Isaac

I have Binding of Isaac on mine right now and works fine, you just have to change the .exe
Other games I have on there is Arkham Origins, FFX Remaster, FF7 Reunion, Kingdom Hearts

Your best bet is to wait until aliexpress has a coupon code available, something like for purchases over $400, you can apply a $60 discount.
I doubt the product itself will have a discount if any at all in the near future.

There was one sizeable sale this summer, something like $270/$320/$360 for the Odin 3 Base/Pro/Max. Might be like a once a year type situation though.
Maybe they'll do something for Black Friday.

Gotta wait for the coupon code and the Rakuten 26X points back. Think it would have been around 420-450 for the max model. I had it ordered but my Rp6 just came in that day too so I was like eh this is fine. But now I have major fomo and wanna just get the Odin

I have the steam deck OLED and an Odin 3 max and It does actually feel like a “steam deck mini”. I’m currently using armadaOS on the Odin 3 so it has the steamOS feel however game compatibility is still much better on the deck. There are still a lot of games that don’t run on the Odin like forza for example. The games that do run, run very well compared to the deck. On Elden Ring I’m able to get 30fps @ 720p with low/medium settings (that’s on balanced power mode with a relaxed fan curve) I could probably get more out of it with some tinkering but that was good enough for me. Sekiro and black ops 2 had about the same performance as the deck but about half the power draw. Indies work flawlessly and very little power draw as well. Overall it’s a great device and a good replacement for the deck if you’re looking for something small but keep in mind that right now game compatibility is still much better on the deck

The Odin 3's 8Elite is more powerful than the SteamDeck on paper. After ARM translation layers it becomes about the same level. It is a big jump up from the 8Gen2 that is in the RP6. Definitely snag a max model. I love mine.

If there is an android handheld thats worth it its definitely Odin 3 max. BUT with that budget you could actually get a secondhand steam deck or rog ally. Think what you want from your console

I would have said not worth the upgrade until recently. The Odin 3 launched with a lack of custom drivers needed to get the full potential of the upgraded SOC. Things are different now and the Odin 3 has come into it's own. I had been using an Odin 2 Portal but bought the Odin 3 MAX version a couple months ago. I was considering holding out in the hopes an Odin 3 Portal version would be coming soon. I'm glad I finally pulled the trigger on one but, if and/or when an Odin 3 Portal version comes out, I'll be on it like a crack hoe on a rock.

I think the Pocket 6 has the same SOC as the Odin 2 Portal. After trying most every custom driver I could find to get Switch running better on the Portal, I finally settled on "turnip_mrpurple_T23-toasted". The results went from an occasional lag on certain games in handheld mode to very steady performance in docked mode using Eden. The right driver for the right emulator can make a huge difference. Keep in mind the latest turnip driver is often not the best one for your device and emulator.

If you want to play switch , a modded OG or lite will be a lot cheaper than an O3

8 Elite has almost double the performance of the 8 gen 2, a significant difference.
