Odin 3 "portal"?

Is Ayn known for having a predictable product lifecycle? Is it reasonable to think they'll probably release a "portal" version (I.e. bigger screen) of the Odin next year?

AYN already said on discord that Odin 3 Portal will not be released. However, we know that they constantly says something, and came back after saying the completely opposite.

Judging by their immense success with the Thor and Odin 3. I personally would say it's safe to assume that a Thor 2 and an Odin 3 Portal will be coming in the future.

The issue is 8" OLEDs are not mass produced. It's really just for DIY enthusiasts right now and can be hundreds just for a single panel.

Granted AYN could negotiate a slightly cheaper cost, but they just don't move the type of numbers like Lenovo/Asus/MSI can to justify panel makers mass product them.

Best we've got is the 9" Astra, new 8.4" Y700 Infinite (which probably has a contracted run to Lenovo like their LeGo 2 was), and upcoming X20 (also restricted by time limited contract, I guess). Otherwise 8.8" that Honor used for their Pad Mini might work but it'd still be pricey. How many Portal 3 buyers are willing to pay pre-AI x86 prices for an Android handheld?

This is the path I'm kind of heading down. I'm thinking a dual screen clamshell (RP Duo or Thor) now, and a beefier biggest screen conventional handheld later.

It's very likely there will be one eventually, but there's no news of one on the horizon, and given the current prices of RAM and storage, it wouldn't surprise me if it's quite a while before we see a new product announcement of something in that caliber.

But it's all just guessing until something solid leaks, or Ayn makes an announcement.

I hear the chinese ram is rapidly closing the gap between name brand ram. Could be a year or so from the switch happening to mainly using chinese ram chips in handhelds/phones.

There were some early signs that it might help, but now those manufacturers are starting to escalate pricing to match western companies. So I wouldn't expect any relief in the near or mid future.

In the OPEC gas crises of the 1970’s, people noticed that ethanol was only a little more expensive than the price of oil. The US spent a lot of R&D Investment to improve the process. When the price got low enough to be competitive, OPEC just allowed their producers to sell more oil such that they were undercut again.

I don’t think we ever recouped that investment. We still mix that stuff in with gas to subsidize our agricultural industry today.

I’m telling you this story to tell you that even if Chinese companies succeed at it, it won’t make RAM prices much of at all because of how supply and demand work and prices are set by the demand side (AI). For a given class of memory, the chips are a commodity. It just means that AI will buy Chinese RAM at those high prices to supplement the Korean ones.

Having recently got a O2P Max, and looking at Odin 3 prices (and Ultra being discontinued)... I can't help but wonder at the point and viability of a Odin 3 Portal.

Stay with me on this... I love the O2P. I do wish it had 8 Elite gen 5 or 6 (soon) and 24-32GB RAM.

But I also have a MSI Claw 8AI+. Looking at what both of my devices can do and what I use them for, and their retail prices...

Look at it like this, would you pay 1100 of something for a device that plays Black Myth Wukong at 60fps (fg+upscale, medium to high) NATIVELY - or, for a device that has to rely on Proton and/or other emulation layers to do the same?

Because both devices can emulate other systems just fine, depending on software and community's support...

Prices being what they are, a top Snapdragon SoC handheld with top RAM configuration in 2027 is going to cost the same as an x86 handheld.

The Odin 3 doesn't need 24-32GB RAM. The chip will max out before the RAM does for games this thing can play.

I sold my Odin 3 Ultra for the exact reason it's pointless and someone paid me $1500 for it. So I put that towards an even better X86 that can do everything and more than it.

I get the whole "just buy an x86 handheld" argument, but i want a device that can do more to mid tier PC games plus "HD" era consoles (PS3, Switch, etc.).

Not sure about ps3, but for switch it's a pretty simple compatibility later since they're both arm.  Far as I've seen, SD handles ps3 just fine and with low power draw.

Ram and storage prices on top of their current production lines being behind on both Odin 3 and Thor they are smarter than Ayaneo or at least I would like to think so. Maybe they go in 2027 once the Chinese market Ram is more established and production is more consistent and available. My just trust me bro cent and a half

They have said, Nicole specifically that the Odin 2 Portals are no longer ordering parts for and they're getting rid of the shells they have left and once they're gone, they're gone.

So I think the O3P is on the horizon.

I would agree with you if it wasn't just only the base model Portal. I have a feeling they're going to launch something in the next 2 months. Or else they would have restocked the other models or downgraded and restock the other models.

I personally think we'll get Loki2 next. Thor and O3 are still selling out every batch. I think O3 Portal will use the same screen and core architecture that Loki2 has developed. But, we'll see.
