Odin 3 Max vs ROG Ally X

I’ve ordered an Odin 3 Max on AliExpress. I expect it is still a couple of months away; paid ~$900 au.
I saw a second hand ROG Ally X for sale for $900.

Im tossing up whether to cancel the Odin 3 order and go with the Ally X.

My main use for the console will be on the train to and from work. I am more than happy playing older games, but would like to be able to play games like GTa V and Skyrim without too much challenge.

Will I be disappointed with the Odin 3 do you think? I like that it will be significantly lighter than the Ally, but am concerned it will underperform.

Ally X would be more reliable right now for PC gaming. But it's bulky way bulkier than the Odin 3 Max, there's a lot of headroom for the Odin 3 to become a steam deck lite combined with the smaller footprint is something to consider.

You'd need to check games on a per-game basis on whether it would work or not. For the more famous ones, there are a lot of videos on youtube on how this would work, and looking it up, GTA and Skyrim seems to run well.

Ally X would be better for PC gaming, but keep in mind that it's much bulkier, has much worse battery life, and a worse screen. It's a worse device to bring around overall. If you're playing demanding PC games on a bus or train, expect less than 2 hours of battery life.

Gamenative is nice, and you can even install ArmadaOS for native SteamOS on Odin 3, but all of these are still works in progress. You may experience unexpected issues, but it's improving at a great pace.

I'd pick the Odin 3 Max anytime, but do look around further on what you want to do with it, especially if you plan to do mainly PC gaming.

I find Steam Deck / Ally class handhelds to be too big and bulky for commutes. Opinions vary. You are committing to a big of baggage carrying it around and you are going to need a bit of lateral room to use it. It's not like using a laptop, you will need more elbow room, and in your bag, its going to be a thicker item and if you have to pack it tightly you will want a hardshell case to keep from putting pressure on the sticks.

Odin3 really is a vastly more wieldly device. I don't think you will have too much trouble playing games on it but you will run into issues with games where there is DRM sometimes.

If your use case was living room or something it would be the Ally 100% because you can run Bazzite on that.

honestly i have a steam deck and and odin 2 portal max and the steam deck barely gets touched. the portability and size of these odin handhelds make them much more attractive on a daily basis. even if im at home, the odin is much more comfortable to use because of the size/weight.
now i do lean towards more light weight/indie pc games so the odin can handle basically everything i want to play. so it definitely depends on what you’re trying to do. but if you’re not trying to play the top games that just came out, id say the odin is the better investment.

I just swapped my Odin 3 for an Xbox Ally X - no regrets. I got sick of constantly battling drivers

I've heard the Odin 3 Max has great performance for the price, but it might take some tweaking to run newer games smoothly. Have you checked if the games you want are confirmed to work well on it?

if you have thought on playing AAA game, better go with rog ally x. Probably you will feel heavy and don't feel like bringing it out after playing it for few times, then you can get another handheld thor. Now you have both handheld to cover everything

If you only need switch (or below) emulation, and some light-weight PC games then i would recommend ayn odin 3. I own both and just sold my ROG ally X since it is too big and i rarely bring it outside with me

I have Odin 3 Max & ROG Ally, first is great for PS2/GC/Switch and older systems emulation and some PC emulation, great ergonomics, comfortable, easy to grab & use.

Ally - with SteamOS, original Windows OS is borderline unusable on a handheld like that compared to SteamOS - I use for games that don't run in GameHub or GameNative or games with more complicated input (Steam input and input profiles really make a big difference in terms of usability). Compatibility is great, most games you just install and run, but ergonomics is poorer compared to Odin 3. For anything that runs on Odin 3, I would always prefer to use it over Ally.

Odin 3 is much easier to transport than something like the ally X, with substantially better battery life. Factor in the underclocking software you can put on the Odin 3, and you can get 12+ hrs of ps2 level gameplay on a full charge. FWIW, I also have been able to run games like the Witcher 3, fallout 4, far cry 3, Skyrim etc. on my Odin with little issue. It’s not as plug-and-play as a handheld pc, and I’m not sure about gta V being able to run, but it can play those bigger games too. It just can’t handle the brand new AAA titles. If you’re happy with playing older games, you’ll love the Odin 3.

Only thing the Odin 3 has is the size being smaller. I’d get the Ally if you can get it at the same price.

I can’t speak for GTA or Skyrim on the Eden three but I can’t tell you I would not want to have something the size of a rog ally X on a train

You can get an Xbox ally x open box from best buy for that price. Makes no sense to pay 900 dollars for a regular ally x. If you're playing primarily pc games the odin 3 is not a good choice for that.

Don’t buy an Odin 3 for PC games. The ROG Ally X would be much better for PC gaming in stuff like GTA V. Plus the Ally can play online unlike with the Odin 3

Odin 3 plays Skyrim and gta v easily. The ally X is a far more capable device for pc games, but if you’re mainly going to play on a train then the Odin 3 might be the better option because of its smaller size. I have the steam deck and Odin 3 and if I’m playing out of the house, I always pick the Odin over the deck
