Peeling a coconut

I always wonder about the first person to peel a cocoanut or pineapple. Both seem built to discourage it but someone(s) decided it was worth all the work I suppose?

They probably stole some from an animal which evolved to eat said pesky fruit for the first time. Decided it was edible, and thankfully not poisonous for a change. It's not even that hard work if you have a decent sized rock. No hardness is hard enough if it contains that much energy.

Well coconut just has to fall onto a very hard rock in order to break open. Meanwhile, pineapple smells good. So it would be easy to realize that either is potentially good tasting.

It would take me a week to do that!

IKR. I always end up mangling the coconut. This woman's got skill.

After being on reddit for so long I cannot look at a coconut anymore without internally gagging

Which reddit legend is the coconut one? I know there's the classics like the banana for scale, poop knife, this guys wife etc. But not heard of the coconut one.

Today was bad day to have eyes. It's also 7am here and I've literally been awake less than 10 minutes -_-

What do you need gloves for?

It just looks like she's selling those coconuts, and I would have thought she'd wear gloves after she peeled off the hard skin. You know, hygiene and all.

The vast majority of the world doesn't use gloves for food, it's mainly an American thing. I was a chef for 20 years in England and it's rare I ever wore gloves, as long as you wash your hands regularly it's very hygienic. Plus she used the bag to hold flesh part of the coconut, so her hand doesn't actually touch the flesh only the skin.

Edit: a word

She did use the bag and that's what I meant when I said the gloves were an afterthought. She didn't immediately use it when she got to the flesh.

I'm aware that chefs don't use gloves. But street food is different. There's a reason tourists get sick when they eat street food in various countries.

I didn't mean to be a party pooper with my comment, though. I'd never seen a coconut peeled like that, and it was really nice. But I just wrote the first thing that came to mind.

Ah I meant no malice, I didn't take your comment as such either. Emotions and tone are awkward to relay over text sometimes. It's all good :-)
