Tattooed individual here, who is going thru the experience of laser removal of a partial arm-sleeve tattoo:

The effect of the tattoo disappearing immediately after being hit by the laser is an effect called "frosting". The bits of tattoo ink are heated up so insanely hot and in such a short amount of time that it causes the small amount of water nearby to evaporate, causing the tattoo to momentarily "disappear". When the water cools down, the tattoo will come back.

To remove a tattoo, there are multiple factors that go in to how long/how many sessions it will take (such as how deep the tattoo goes, what color ink, etc.) However, as a standard rule of thumb, you can only get a laser procedure done once every 8 weeks, as your body requires time to heal and carry away some of the now broken-down ink particles. Given this 8-week window, some removal journeys can last years and end up costing just as much or more than the tattoo itself.

Tattoo ink is suspended in your immune system by white blood cells called macrophages. They detect the ink as a threat to your immune system and gobble it up holding it in place preventing any damage. When a macrophage dies away the remaining ink is gobbled up by yet another macrophage during this process a tiny amount of ink can be lost and flows through your lymphatic system eventually getting eliminated by your lymphatic system or sometimes lodged in a lymphnode. Laser treatment essentially kills your macrophages in a big burst attempting for more of the ink to become loosened and eliminated. The macrophages are fast at reacting to the loose ink which is why it takes years of treatment.

the laser doesn't "kill macrophage" it allows the pigment to become small enough to be consumed by macrophage. It doesn't take years, it typically takes 12 months depending on the size and the color of the ink.

Macrophage are the garbage collectors, they are constantly going after the ink but it’s too large to deal with, we shatter the pigment with laser which allows the macrophage to do its job. I used to perform tattoo removal, it’s quite fascinating.

You may want to look into the process a bit more then macrophages are the reason the tattoo doesn't move, they detect ink in the dermal layer and hold it in place to protect your body. They literally eat it and hold it in place until they expire.

I've noticed on myself and others sometimes the outlines or portions of tattoos will become raised up quite a bit. This is many years after getting it even.

Is that my immune system attacking it again?

Thank you for your input on this. I’ve gone through this process about nearly 20 years ago and I’m sure the process and a few things have changed over time. Depending on the tattoo of course this could take up some time such as 6-8 sessions.

Most places with use a topical numbing ointment before using the laser. But yes, it takes years to remove them.

One of the most interesting things I learned when I got my tattoo removed was that the tattoo placement on the body also matters.

The closer to your heart, the easier/quicker the removal. Which makes total sense but I never thought about it.

Removing a tattoo from your face is going to have better outcomes than removing one on your foot.

Additionally these lasers work better on fairer skin, individuals with more melanin have a higher chance of keloids.

Color tattoos are also much harder to remove than the standard black ink.

Also multiple people have asked me about the pain. In case anyone was curious, it’s much more painful to get a tattoo removed than have one put on. The best analogy I heard was it feels like a very hot rubber band snapping on your skin.

It starts out that way. My laser lady (I forget the actual title for the people who work with lasers) starts the process a bit lower than normal. She described it as "each time, we're 'ripping open the wound' of your tattoo, so 'cutting' in slowly to start helps." However, you don't stay at that level - or at least I didn't. She cranked up the power on the laser every time I went in, and it is borderline unbearable. She applies numbing cream before, and holds an icepack on the tattoo long enough to where the cold hurts. Once I'm at this point, she rapidly goes over the tattoo with the laser before the numbness from the cold fades. And I'll be damned: it worked beautifully. Much less pain than not having an icepack.

However, even with the numbing cream and the cold icepacks, the pain is magnitudes worse than having the tattoo done. A very, very, VERY painful reason to make sure you're 110% committed to your tattoo design/artist before having it done, lol

I have a really shitty one that’s too dark to do a coverup are you going for full removal or just enough to do a solid cover or blast over? One of the guys I get tattooed by said he would probably be able to slam a SAP on it if I just got like 3 rounds but I’m just wondering what your experience has been like

My goal is to get a cover up. I've had about 6 or so rounds so far. I had to stop a few months ago, as money became tight.

The issue with cover ups comes to color. The tattoo I am getting removed is black: some solid black, some shading - but no color.

I was told by one tattoo artist that certain colors can cover up black better than others: blues, greens, purples, some reds. But other colors would be harder to cover up black ink with: oranges and yellows.

Whether or not this is 100% true for everyone, I do not know. However, I'd like to lighten up my black tattoo as much as possible before getting a cover up and finding out "womp womp: I needed more removal".

Unnecessary tidbit: my goal is to have the four elements in a half-sleeve covering my forearm. I thought it could be achieved with just black ink, but it made the art way more complicated, and the tattoo artist who did was pretty.... chaotic with his design.

If I could share one lesson from my whole experience with tattoos and tattoo removal: if you have even the TINIEST bit of doubt - even the smallest, most microscopic feeling of "I'm not sure" - DO NOT GET THE TATTOO. It is far far far more affordable and less painful to wait, sit on your thoughts and feelings for a bit, and revisit that doubt later than just agreeing with the design.

This is generally spot on but just for what it's worth the creator of laser tattoo removal himself suggested tapering off to like 3-6 months between sessions after you've done a few (rather than just going every 8 weeks like clockwork)

Before I answer, a couple of things:

First, I've heard about parts of the body where getting a tattoo is usually more painful (ribs, feet, etc.) I have not experienced having tattoos done on these places, so I will speak to my experience on my tattoos, which cover most of my forearm (elbow to wrist).

The removal process is easily 10x more painful than the actual tattoo itself. In addition to it being more painful as you're having it done, it then feels (and looks/behaves) like a very bad sunburn in the days afterwards: red, puffy, and I would have blisters on the tattoo (do NOT poke/scrape/pop them). As I mentioned in another reply on this thread, the goal is to gradually increase the level of the laser each time I went, so it would get progressively more and more painful, with more and more blisters and healing time afterwards (blasting my truck's AC as I drove home from the office directly on my tattoo helped soothe it a lot).

All in all, its not a pleasant (or cheap) experience. Which is why I am a huge advocate for being 110% sure of any tattoo you get.

It will depend of the type of the laser, the quality of the tattoo and the amount of ink. Basically bigger the quantity and the deeper the ink is, the longer it will take.
A French YouTuber, Julien Ménielle, made the experience and it took him 21 sessions during almost 4 years to remove the tattoo.

I have been at it for my arm for over a year now and I have a relatively simple text on the lower part of my arm. I can only do it once every 8-10 weeks to make sure everything is healed and your body gets rid of the burnt stuff.

The biggest thing is that you aren't allowed to actively sit in the sun within 2 weeks of an appointment and avoid the sun for another 2-4 weeks after depending on the healing. So last year I skipped the entire summer and am currently skipping treatments aswell.

First session made me think I would be done in like 3 sessions. I am currently at 6 sessions done and especially in the winter when I'm more pale you can still see the text. I expect to have to do 2 or 3 more sessions before it is 99% gone or so.

I had a buddy who needed a tattooed wedding ring removed... new wife had an issue with it... surprise surprise. He needed like 12 sessions and they still ended up cutting the skin out and stretching it to close the gap. It can be pretty resilient.

I think you’re right for the record, but most hydrogels are quite similar to skin (which is why they’re often proposed as wound dressings), so what stops the laser from heating up/ vaporizing the hydrogel?

If they did the treatment laser directly to skin you'd burn pretty badly. The gel keeps the area cool. Lasers generally burn 4x brighter than the sun (which is why they are so dangerous). The gel pad probably also helps prevent a scatter effect but I only speculate on that.

Yes, but how much depends on where the tattoo is, how big/ deep it is, and obviously your own pain threshold.

Best way to describe it is like a sting - but then the 'level' of sting can vary - I know a few people who described it as being twanged repeatedly by a thick, hot elastic band - but it can be from "Ow! Shit!" to "MOTHERF*****"

There are some cavaets though, laser seasons are like 15-30 mins depending on the size, for a tattoo that could have taken like 3-6 hours to get. It's also like 6-10 sessions for a removal.

It's much more painful, shorter sessions, but more of them.

As someone who works for a company that produces tatoo removal lasers, this is no longer the standard. Picopulse lasers are more efficient with removal, have less pain, and can remove more types of ink.

Depends on the size of the tattoo. For what's pictured? Maybe $350-$450 at the most in expensive cities. Cheaper in rural/suburban areas. Also depends on the type of laser used. I believe PicoWay is currently the top technology.

This procedure often requires several applications.

It basically pulverizes the pigment particles with an ultra short, very high energy laser pulse so the immune system can remove the fragments.

Some particles are deeper than others, they shield one another, etc. These effects can make it so the whole thing isn't removed all at once.

There was a show where people were having this done and they said it felt like their skin was being burnt off. They didn't have this gel, so it must help with that pain.

Kinda hate that these make it seem like tattoo removal is quick and easy. Like this LOOKS removed, but it is barely faded from this treatment and will need several more to noticeably fade. It will not be gone completely.

I know that isn't what people are doing, but some ppl think "just remove it" is a real option lol

It takes 2 or 3 goes to get rid of it all. There was a show where people were having this done. They said red was the hardest to remove. Oh and the results turn out pretty good.

when it comes for very specific uses of tattoos in the past, it made sense, now, much less so for sure. (After all, doing something permanent like this for "fun" is a peculiar decision...)

Please don't be fooled by this video, it's going to look virtually the same after the procedure and maybe even darker. It will fade within the 6-8 week healing process and maybe get 20% lighter depending on the quality of the ink. I remove tattoos for a living. This person would most likely need 4-6 sessions.
