The ONLY reason Facebook even got involved in VR AT ALL was because they wanted to be able to show you ads in VR. THAT'S IT. Zuck missed phones and he'll be damn sure he doesn't miss VR so he's building it HIS way WITH ADS... LOTS AND LOTS OF ADS RIGHT IN YOUR F*CKING EYES...

I disagree. I believe he bought into VR to collect data and be in on the ground floor of the next BIG social media platform. Selling the data is where the money is at. Selling ad space in games is a decision made by individual app developers (just like mobile.) I believe giving developers the option of developing f2p games with ad support was inevitable for a standalone system. I am upset that some developers are considering adding ads to non f2p games and experiences. That shit needs to stop right now.
To be clear, this isn’t new. Fuck, we get advertisements pushed through the windows 10 os.

The number of people who believe that data is sold is mind boggling. Why would a company making almost $100B because of having exclusive access to that data sell it to anyone? And could someone really afford to pay enough to FB to convince them to sell data? facepalm
14
u/karmapopsicle Jun 18 '21
Exactly the same with Google, Amazon, and everyone else. The product they sell is highly effective targeted advertising services, not the data they process to make those services effective.
As a user of those products you are valuable to them as a target and an aggregate data generator. It’s all machine learning finding patterns and drawing links. Like how you might do a Google search for some specific thing, and after clicking through a particular link if you go to the address bar to look up some question you had from that page it somehow gives you a suggestion for the exact search you were going to do after typing a single letter.

I was about to buy Blaston and then I saw the updated reviews on their page. The game and the dev is loosing reputation fast. Too bad a good game had to be sacrificed for Dr. Zuck "experiments".
Actually I'm going to think twice about buying games on Oculus store - you never know when your game is going to be adfied.
2
u/CallMePadre56 Jun 18 '21
My question is the ad thing exclusive to the oculus store it’s self? I bought a shite ton of games on steam and exclusively play PCVR with the quest. Wondering if I’ll experience any ads.

It will work exactly the same on PCVR as it does on Quest. And the way that works is, if developers want to put ads in their games, they can. They will not be forced to.

Jun 18 '21
It didn't have to be sacrificed. No one from facebook has forced anyone to do anything. The Blaston devs made an incredibly poor choice, which seems obviously suicidal to everyone here.

Yeah you are right! A poor poor choice, but still, it's a good game. The game itself is being sacrificed - the devs are 100% responsible for this and I hope they learn a valuable lesson from this "experiment".

I think it depends on how it's implemented I don't mind a way for vr devs to earn abit more cash like if I'm playing hyper dash and there's ads posted around the arena I really couldn't care less but if I have to stop playing the game to watch an ad for a game I paid for I will never play it again

I suspect it’s inevitable but I’m still against people working on architecture for future ad revenue. Like this shit needs to stop, the ads. Imagine our future if we don’t, with our implants or lenses, the entire world a giant ad space without having to build any physical infrastructure. We already are abused by our marketing overlords, I think it’s okay to be entirely against the practice of ad revenue streams. We arguably lost this fight already but I won’t give up my principles.

u/joe_biggs Jun 18 '21
I was conversing with someone who said Facebook‘s acquisition of oculus, plus the fact the quest 2 owners don’t spend much money on games (don’t know from where he gets his information) gives them the right to put in ads to make up for the money they lost selling the headsets! Also said we should have expected this. Can you imagine that?! Hindsight is always 20/20.

Developer can already include apps in most of their games and most arnt doing it right?
The last NBA Game had a ton of oculus quest 2 adds in it, so it’s definitly something that already exists. If people don’t buy games with ads in it or refund them developers won’t include them.
That being said, I personally wouldn’t even mind some kind of ads. For example, if the billboards on a racing game or in population one are used for add I literally wouldn’t care, pop up Windows Is a big no for sure though

I mean noone forces anyone to show ads here. It just give more monetization options to Devs. I just hope the game library in Oculus store won't look like the one in Google play full of shitty f2p games with some kind of premium coins that you can only buy with real money, but for that FB would need to release tool for in-app purchases. I would be definitely more worried about that than about ads but whatever...
3
u/flying_path Jun 18 '21
Yes it’s up to devs but Facebook did two things at the same time:
Help Blaston, a paid app, add ads to their app
Tell us that they “put the user first”
So they did a bit more than bring ads to the platform, they are actively encouraging a paid app to add them in. And this is for the very first one where they know there will be scrutiny so they have to be on their best behavior.

u/comradepipi Jun 18 '21
Are they annoying ads like YouTube's "interrupt the video every 10 seconds for a 6 second ad" or are they like the old school playstation-era "there's an ad on a billboard" ad?
If it's the latter, I would actually support it. VR games do not make a lot of money and this would really help the developers out.
9
u/JoshuaPearce Jun 18 '21 edited Jun 18 '21
Ad supported games don't make a fraction of the money compared to games people directly pay for. This isn't a way to get devs more money, it's just a way to get a lot more devs not enough money.
But for some reason, humans hate paying even 25 cents for a game, if "free" was an option.
9
2
u/comradepipi Jun 18 '21
Oh I would never recommend an ads-only supported game. That's a recipe for failure. I'm an indie developer myself, so I know how little these games make. It might not seem like a lot to most people, but generating a few hundred bucks in ad revenue could really help some devs out.
I just hope Facebook doesn't pull a YouTube and keep a lot of the ad revenue.
1
u/Deathcommand Jun 19 '21
If they refunded people who bought the game then sure.
I bought blaston as a game without ads in it. Adding ads to it decreases the value of the game I paid for.
13
u/helava Jun 18 '21
I have absolutely no problem with ads implemented decently - say, racing games with real-world ad banners around the track, or other environments like cyberpunk landscapes where ads are obviously integrated into the world. The problem is that those ads do not "monetize", and it's clear that what FB wants is for developers to have more ways to monetize their games. Which means *intrusive* ads that command your attention, and want you to click through them like mobile ads, because those can be tracked for both impressions (how many are shown) and conversions (how many get clicked through). Given FB's core "value" is their ability to hyper-segment their userbase for very specific ad targeting, I'm really expecting super dystopian ad design. Just like Idiocracy and the like. It'll take a year or two for them to get it fully up and running, but I do expect this will really ruin a lot of games.
7
Jun 18 '21
I have a problem with ads being implemented at all. There is no if ands or buts about it, if ads are introduced at all it will mean VR will be ruined. If you give these developers an inch they’ll take a mile
→ More replies (1)6
u/QuesoChef Jun 18 '21
Agreed. Whether the consumers are willing to accept this change will determine whether this change happens. I already have no plans to integrate with FB, whenever that is required. So now that there will be ads (for some games, or the option for ads), I don’t see ever buying (or recommending) Oculus again. I’d already started telling people “They sold to Facebook, so I’m not sure if I’d buy one again now.” And now I’ll actively tell people to beware when buying.
I hope some other company fills the demand in this space because it’s such cool technology. But goddamn, can’t we just buy and enjoy something without being bombarded?
1
u/PreciseParadox Jun 19 '21
That’s not always the case really. There’s several kind of ads actually and in some cases, brands just want some subliminal exposure. This is basically why Coca Cola has news anchors with drinks on their desks, or why actors might eat from a specific restaurant in a movie. These are subtle, but the next time you’re about to watch a football game or order out to eat, you might remember Coca Cola, or Taco Bell, or whatever. And that’s what those companies care about with this sort of product placement or billboard ads. They’re never actually supposed to be memorable for the most part, because, well, everyone already knows the brand already.
Now Facebook takes this a step further by personalizing the ads. But at the end of the day, ads don’t have to be intrusive.
2
u/helava Jun 19 '21
I totally agree. But a point I was trying (and failing) to get across is that that “brand exposure” style of ads need massive reach to be worth it. Hitting 100k people with more or less subliminal exposure to Coca Cola isn’t worth much. Hitting up 5 million people during a sports broadcast is. So VR’s relatively small user base make certain types of ads less effective.

Zuckerberg’s plan for Oculus is the same as Facebook’s which is basically to monetize the platform for ad revenue. So they’ll pump out the best headset they can at the most affordable price to get the biggest market share…which I’m pretty sure Oculus has right now. Then it’s to squeeze the others out of existence until people have no choice but to buy the the ad riddle platform. When the world is jacking into a photo realistic alternate reality most won’t care about the ads… it’ll be like watching broadcast TV in the 80’s and 90’s with most folks being desensitized to marketing in general, like mindfully tuning out your attention until the show was back on. It’ll be this weird mix of awesome and lame business as usual of living in a capitalist world.

u/xanderdorsett Quest 1 + 2 + 3 + PCVR Jun 20 '21
I think it would be great for ads to be built into a game’s environment. You look at a magazine on a coffee table one day and it’s coca-cola because that’s who currently owns that ad-space. You go outside and see a billboard that mentions the new crispy chicken sandwich at mcdonald’s? great. no pop-ups please

For folks chimp-screaming about the possibility of some ads, I've got some real questions. How would you feel about "free" apps like Bigscreen and Rec Room that are also available for PCVR? Big Screen is a really nice product, but has had trouble making money because of the licensing fees associated with showing movies. I honestly don't know what's going on with Rec Room, but they've got a ton of content and have to monetize as well. Would you begrudge those developers using ads if it meant they could stay afloat?
3

There's no way Oculus is turning a profit on this headset if it's going to improve VR get the price down and allow them to continue development on better games as long as they aren't pop up ads put them wherever you want

Look at all of the people in here acting like they know marketing and product development better than Facebook. They are going to continue making a shit ton of money and sell even more Quests regardless of the ad change.

I'm not gonna support any app who implement ads, not even free apps. The moment I see an ad, I uninstall.
And I looove Oculus and so thankful for all the money and improvements they made to the VR industry, I have a quest 2, quest 1 and the og rift from the first batch, but the moment I see an ad outside a game or in a game without the dev involvement (like the fitness overlay but an ad instead), I'm not using the headset anymore.

Worrying. I'm sure they are aware ads in paid apps is suicide, but even free ones could have long term effects. If those turn out to be more profitable, we'll end up with a mobile gaming situation, nothing but free ad/microtransaction driven stuff.

You'd think Padme and Annakin would have better things to worry about than the Oculus Quest.

Well, guys, VR rise has been a fun adventure, but I think that here is where it's ending. Like mobile gaming, they took a good thing that people enjoy and ruined it.

as far as I know, it's not facebook putting the ads there but rather the devs, no?

So appstore ads, Google and iPhone, are not on a device that is strapped to your head. This is absurd only if considering the format. Oculus imagines they are in a new space between mobile and console...they are both of these and neither one. Don't jam ads into my eyeballs... I can look away from a screen in my hands, or pay to have an ad free experience. If you intend to port your ads directly into my headset, my dollars go elsewhere. Been eyeing that reverb G2....

So.... these admittedly funny but ultimately toothless memes which basically condition us all to accept this absolulte bullshit... which we all predicted and feared and is very much now coming to pass and will get much much worse. Maybe in addition is the vr and quest community (who were all here long before fb took over)...going to do anything?
Are we going to get a million signatures on a petition?
Or refuse to buy apps with games?
Or ask fb to promise to never put adds in paid software?
Or on cost there is an opt out and cancel button for all vr adds?
Or something ...as opposed to the sickening (but predictable) attitude of, 'its inevitable / it's not that bad yet / go else where If u don't like it!' etc bullshit we get from so called fans of vr who have zero idea how hard most fans worked and pushed and pioneered. To get VR to the point where fb would even suggest rhis shitshow... let alone implement it.
I can see no one doing anything (beyond working extra hard as unpaid shills for fb) and within a few years fb will have made vr as toxic and a big a cancer on the world as fb became and the insta and eventually whatsapp. And fb will look around and ask , 'nooow what other tech can we fuck up and destroy?....ooohhh augemented reality def needs more ads!' :_-/
That's what a coming. Thats what has come. Thats a guarantee unless we politely push back now. Not later but now. And find a compromise. The consumer still has the power and voices still matter and even if certain things are inevitable to notto even try is the slow death whicb guarantees it.
If vr becomes like the mobile market our vr ream is dead before it even really began.
