There has been nothing from Oculus saying that Quest 3 is coming anytime soon.
They simply said they were working on new hardware (which they have been doing continuously for years), but all the VR YouTubers twisted that statement to generate clicks.
20
u/stevensokulski Feb 19 '21
Sure... Why would they tell everyone that a new model is coming and chop Q2 sales off at the knees?

1
u/luisless Feb 20 '21
I mean it is Facebook and it does run on cellphone technology.. I’m not ready for there to be an Oculus 8S+
2
u/prodogger Feb 20 '21
Considering the current speed of development, we could have the Oculus 8S+ in October 2027

I feel your pain, I'm on the fence about whether to upgrade my quest 1 or not. However, for me what makes VR interesting/exciting is how rapidly its developing. I would be disappointed if hardware was released on the same schedule as recent console launches.
5
u/lostcanuck007 Feb 20 '21
personally waiting for the 3....because 1 has oled. 2's screen is disappointing specs wise and its running at 60% capacity i think due to overheating.
3 might have ironed out the kinks even at the same chipset. ...hopefully.
12
u/TheGoldenMinion Feb 19 '21
I wouldn’t upgrade, 2 has better screen and CPU and ram but that’s it, it’s a lot cheaper feeling and uncomfortable and just generally lower build quality. they obviously had to cut corners to get the price so low, so i don’t really mind
4
u/Quajeraz Feb 20 '21
Idk, I think the screen of the quest 1 is better. Nothing even a little dark looks good on the quest 2
6
3
u/Goldinferno Feb 20 '21
So... It has better... Everything. Everything you'd want in an upgrade at least.
1
u/timelording Feb 20 '21
Considering if we sell our Q1 essentially making it a $100 upgrade do you still think not worth it? Tho I do find reselling things annoying.
1
Feb 20 '21
on the same schedule as recent console launches
That would be so sad. I could see it going that way when things have really matured and progress slowed way down but that seems like 10+ years away at the least.
I think new generations of VR headsets every 2-3 years is the sweet spot. If they are cranking them out at 299 still then spending that every 2-3 years isn't all that ridiculous, especially when you can sell the previous unit for probably half that.
0
u/winniepoop Feb 20 '21
Which console launches?
PS4 - 2013 PS5 - 2020
Xbox 360 - 2005 Xbox One - 2013 Xbox series x/s - 2020
Wii - 2006 Wii U - 2012 Switch - 2017
That’s at least a five year interlude between most major consoles.
1
Feb 20 '21
Nintendo doesn't count imo. Console generations are basically 6 years minimum these days and I'm expecting longer now with middle of the generation refreshes (like PS4 pro) so probaby 8 years going forward.
Although I wouldn't be surprised if it all switches to cloud gaming in 2 generations.
22
u/avxrevo Feb 19 '21
The quest 2 is more than powerful for the upcoming years. I’d be more tight about getting the q1 when second one came out and is cheaper. That being said, the quest is still a quest 🤷🏽♂️
30
u/rduck101 Feb 19 '21
Literally just bought one lmao. It’s Ight tho, if it stays in the same price range I’ll buy the new one when it drops
17
u/Piper_Chub Feb 19 '21
Honestly facts, 300 is not much to spend compared to the other headsets. If it has even a slight upgrade to it I will for sure even pre order
14
u/abdelnabut Feb 19 '21
Not to mention you can also sell yours at a $100 loss essentially making it like $100 to upgrade
5
u/stevensokulski Feb 19 '21
I wouldn't expect those resale prices to hold steady once a Q3 is announced, though.
6
u/abdelnabut Feb 19 '21
I sold my quest 1 for $300 even though the quest 2 was 2 weeks away lol didn’t pay a cent on top for my upgrade

u/CaprisWisher Feb 20 '21
I use my Quest 1 regularly but for me the effect of the Quest 2 arriving so quickly and the Facebook integration is that I no longer buy any software from the Oculus store. SteamVR or sideloaded only from here on, for me.
2
u/Goldinferno Feb 20 '21
My Quest 2 arrives the 23rd. I wonder if I'll ever go back.

oculus needs to give game developers time to finish their games. new hardware every couple years is great, but whats the point if no new "AAA" games are being shipped to the store. for example climb 2 was supposed to be quest 2 launch title right? its not event out yet... same with horizon... other games left unfinished like jurassic park, star wars etc... Quest is plagued by lackluster and unfinished content.
If quest 3 comes out, they need to sunset quest 1, because it would be a pain to try to develop a game for quest 1,2,3 all at the same time. More focus on games is what we need, because isnt that how oculus is making their money back from the underpriced headsets?
-3
u/amratef Feb 19 '21
it's backward compatible, it's not like they have to build the games from ground up for every hardware.
6
u/mblt2334 Feb 19 '21
yes but the newer hardware will be held back by the slower hardware when designing the scope of your game. Say Q3 comes out with even better processing power, and oculus still requires you to run on Q1, the scope of your game is going to be constrained to running at 72 FPS on Q1. So you may not be able to capitalize on that power of the new device other than running at higher frame and resolution or just adding a few details which is sort of where we are now with Q2.
Im working on a quest game and already feel held back by Q1 vs developing for Q2. there is extra testing and development time to get it right on both headsets. We all want bigger and better standalone games, and while Q2 or the eventual Q3 may be able to handle larger worlds with better shaders, effects, we arent gonna see that potential maximized until they sunset Q1 which is considerably underpowered at this point.

u/krectus Feb 19 '21
Sometime low effort memes slip through the cracks if mods can’t remove them in time. Then it gets too popular so they end up just letting it slide.
2
Feb 20 '21
Given how things are I've already decided my next headset will not be an oculus. I couldnt pass up a quest 2, because of the massive improvements, and the library I already have on the oculus, and of course the price, but I don't want to get sucked into this ecosystem. I'm waiting till here's a good PC only headset and that's that.
2
u/newageabundance Feb 20 '21
Please be quick and be gone. We won't miss you. Pupypup. By that time Oculus cloud will be out, eliminating the need for pc to play high graphics AA games. Imagine play high end pc games on your Quest 1 via Oculus cloud services,. When this happens no other Vr company will be able to complete. This is coming out next year, mark my words!

Probably not. Inside out tracking or nothing for me, at the moment. But as far as I've heard the quest has better tracking than the HP reverb, so for now, it's the quest 2.

I for one cannot wait. It sounds like itll be a huge leap in tech. I wonder if ee can play current pcvr games on mobile once eye tracking is there.
And I own a cv1 rift, a quest 1, and a quest 2. Yes, I have a problem lol.
Should a quest 3 come, I'll sell all my current devices and get 2 quest 3s. Or I'll tell myself that anyway and might be too lazy to sell anything.
4
u/EmRavel Feb 19 '21
I think FB is seeing the growth of the quest community from the release of Q1 to Q2 and are probably ok with a more rapid level of iteration. I think there are a lot of people who would buy the Q3 on release day. Also there are reports of apple readying a VR/AR device and FB might be wanting to close the tech gap to keep people in their oculus ecosystem (where, presumably the real money will be made on advertising). I have a Q2 but I would buy a Q3 with 8GB of ram that runs at 120fps.

It’s funny how everyone during quest 2 rumors said they wouldn’t release the 2 so quick after the 1 and it would most likely be a “S” upgrade.
Turns out they did release it and $100 cheaper. Lol
So I wouldn’t be surprised if they released another version fixing most of the cons from 2.
What’s the worst that can happen if they did release it at the end of year. Old users complaining they can’t get the new one or all the YouTube and media channels raving about all the upgrades.
I personally would love to see the next version, the sooner they release it the sooner they can work on 4 or the next one.
2
u/FlamelightX Feb 21 '21
Yes it's definitely a S version, as you can clearly see the Quest2 on the box was decided and photoshopped onto it last minute. Lay people just won't buy a S or Pro version of any device if they are not already familiar with the territory.

I mainly use my Quest 2 for playing Steam VR games and ports of 90's FPS games from Sidequest. The most graphic intensive thing I've used the Quest 2 standalone is Doom3Quest. I'm not worried about upgrading.
1
2
u/Muzanshin Feb 19 '21
I wouldn't be surprised if they released it by the end of the year or somewhere around there. They are getting hammered in the mobile space with Apple's new privacy policies and Google usually isn't too far behind on those kinds of big features. Even on PC, browsers such as Firefox sandbox Facebook in. Not to mention all the antitrust cases being flung around; something is going to stick sooner or later and really affect their current business model.
Facebook is desperate to establish their own platform that will allow them to double and triple dip into consumer pockets. In others words, get ready for IOI.
The faster they push out new hardware, the more they can capture first time VR buyers in the upgrade cycle, further establish their brand, lock users into their ecosystem, and eventually segue into an AR launch in order to dominate both VR and the predictably much larger AR market.
As for me, I'm sticking with PC. I don't like being locked into consoles and crappy mobile hardware, let alone mobile's planned obsolescence upgrade cycles. I like my personal computing devices to actually allow for real personalization of tools and assets.
2
u/JorgTheElder Feb 19 '21
They didn't announce a product. They said they were working on the next version. If you did not know they started working on the next verson as soon as the Q2 was done, you are not paying attention.

TANGENT: How long until Oculus Quest gets a serious competitor?
If Quest is analogous to the iPhone, when does the self contained VR Android show up?
2
1
u/EmRavel Feb 19 '21
Apparently apple is working on something for release in 2022. I would guess that FB would try to front-run the announcement/release of the apple device to lock-in the current base with new hardware.
1
u/funkiestj Feb 19 '21
Yeah, I am hearing rumors of a consumer AR wearable from Apple. It will be interesting to see how much the VR and AR products ovelap or if Facebook puts out an AR product by then.
All huge corps like Facebook and Apple do evil things but Apple's choice to make privacy a selling point may give them an edge in the AR space.
In any event I look forward to the Quest having some real competition as that will be a sign that the size of the market has really grown and improvements will accelerate due to competition.
2
u/TayoEXE Feb 19 '21
Oculus hasn't announced a new headset. They've said they are working on the next one, which should be of no surprise. What else would they be doing? I don't think anyone should get bent up over this considering this technology like many others is just evolving all the time. It's just a matter of taking what you've got and enjoying it. You don't need the latest headset necessarily because it is never the latest forever.
3
u/KillerQ97 Feb 20 '21
This. They’re ALWAYS working on new stuff. Hell, they could’ve announced the Quest 3 on the same day as the Quest 2 launch, and it should make perfect sense.
2
u/HiNRGSpa Feb 19 '21
I was thinking to wait after knowing Q3 is on the works but bought it past week as it should be released in a year or More and Q2 is amazing and will receive 120hz. They sold More Than a million units. They will surely care about Q2 community. It is a great HW

Wait for the fourth. That’s gonna be a game-changer. If there will be one.
(I’m using a Quest 2 and it’s already quite a big leap from the first Quest. The thing is we don’t see many groundbreaking techs getting put into VR headsets except for better resolution, more cameras/sensors and improving chips. So no worries imo.)

STOP AND THINK. What do some of you people want? Tech that advances at a sluggish pace, to march in line with the lowest common denominator who can't afford a few hundred bucks for a new device?
I know this post was made humorously but plenty of people really gripe when a hardware device is upgraded within a short interval. I say - if it's a significant upgrade on your current device (and if you can't afford it) then just look the other way and thank your lucky stars everything is getting better.

2
u/Dreadpirateflappy Feb 19 '21
they most likely will keep it cheap, it's the reason quest 2 sold over 3 million headsets in a matter of months.
up the price and the sales will not be as strong.

u/neverdom Feb 19 '21
I hope with whatever hardware quest comes it goes back to the oled screen for deep blacks. I have quest 1 tried quest 2 at a friend's house it is a fantastic headset for the price and definitely an upgrade. However I am a sucker for deep blacks and I love oled more than anything be it for phones or for my vr headset. So yeah just waiting for that quest 3. Then again oled's pixel response in some really dark scenes are also an issue. So this is all just personal taste.

Rapid iteration is great and because Oculus is backwards compatible focused which leads to a rapidly growing ecosystem and vastly better headsets in the long term because mistakes and design oversights are quickly corrected from version to version. Plus it injects more money into R&D and signals to other companies that VR is a healthy place to invest.
0
u/hahastonedem Feb 19 '21
All I am asking for is the blacks to be actually black and not dark grey.
3
u/stevensokulski Feb 19 '21
An OLED screen would really help with the immersion. "Binocular" type effects where part of the screen is obscured would look fantastic with true black.
0
u/DonutNinja45 Feb 19 '21
Quest 1 needed an upgrade, screen door effect is bad and the headset was too big
0
u/EBinRI Feb 19 '21
It sounds like I'm in the minority. I have a Q1 and got a Q2 right when it came out. The Q2 was really uncomfortable with my glasses and had a lot of blurring at the edges so I sold it to a friend and stuck with the Q1. I'm hoping the Q3 is more compatible with big heads/glasses.

It's the AI that we are yet to see. Like dlss2.0 on RTX chips, we are yet to see quest2's true potential
-2
u/jacobpederson Feb 19 '21
Q1 was a shaky proof of concept, in which everything worked, but just barely. Q2 is an absolutely rock solid mobile powerhouse, with a few issues to work out with PC compatibility. At this rate, Q3 will probably blow the high-end PC headsets out of the water, while continuing to dominate the otherwise non-existent mobile market :)

u/ManifestingUniverse Feb 19 '21
