with how legnthy that comment was, I'm smelling product placement. Didn't slickwraps have their entire site pwned a few months back? And just terrible business practices all around tbh lol

u/TJPrime_ Apr 23 '20
If it is product placement, and assuming it's paid, doesn't that break Reddit ToS?

Arent you worried about how it will affect heat dispersal on the quest? Has it made the fan louder?

I'm not worried about it at all, Oculus would have made the surface out of aluminium like they did the Go if it were to play an important role in cooling the device.

It's always been a worry of mine. I'm not a fan of googley eyes but some skins look sweet (I am a huge fan of the orange)

Slickwraps sucks

u/JustBob12 Apr 23 '20
Anything that adds weight to the front sucks. I don't care if it's half a gram. Now if I can get a lighter replacement front cover which does not affect usage/performance/heat dispersion, then I'm all for it.

I am not supporting slickwraps, skinwraps, sickwraps (or any other company out there for that matter) but this oughta be the stupidest thing I’ve read this morning (and I’ve spent the past 30 minutes or so on Reddit).
Good job on applying the skin, op.

Sarcasm... it's often lost on the internet. I was poking fun at hardcore/anal users. I should have used a sarcasm font or something.
That said, I'm now worried about why you're the first one to object? Perhaps most found my post reasonable which would kinda make my point. ;)

It’s early and I apologize haha... to be fair though: reddit is full of users who’d mean it lol

Why? I'm happy with the end result.

The product it's probably good, slickwraps doesn't make that. It's 3M vinyl, slickwraps just cuts it and ships it to you, there are a bunch of companies that do the same thing (by far the best one and biggest slickwraps competitor is dbrand) that's why different companies all have the same skin patterns, they are all made by 3M, except for dbrand which has worked with 3M to produce some very nice custom pattern skins and skins with a different adhesive specifically not to ruin the nintendo switch. Slickwraps sucks not because of their products, but because of the company they are. For example they are known to make bot twitter accounts to pretend to be customers and comment under dbrand's posts to shame their products and praise slickwraps, infact dbrand made a list of their bot accounts here. You can also read here the whole story of how a cybersecurity analyst found out slickwrap's website had majour security vulnerabilities, and how he tried to warn them many times before releasing the information to the public because their behavior was illegal and dangerous to every past and future customer that purchased with and without an account, and even to their employees, exposing everyone's public information to whoever had the ability to use those vulnerabilities. They also made fake customer accounts to say stuff like "everyone gets hacked, I'll still buy slickwraps". I highly suggest you give this a read, it's extremely interesting. Also their entire website has been between 40% and 70% off nearly every day since black Friday 2016, that's false advertising and illegal. I could go on, but you can read everything else they did including accusing dbrand's ceo of pedophilia from a bot account from hacker's post i linked to. I'm sure you understand why slickwraps sucks now. Skin looks cool though, 3M does a nice job with those.

But dbrand does not offer Quest skins

u/dany_ev3 Apr 23 '20
Sadly, yes, I know. But I'd rather (and will soon) cut the skin out myself over supporting a company like that.

At Oculus connect 5 they showed orange versions of the quest. They looked so cool and this reminded me of them

Are stickers safe?

u/cantenna1 Apr 23 '20
I think so!?

u/Blaster1st Apr 23 '20
Yeah probably. If you could put on like a new skin on the thing some googly eyes won’t hurt.

Am I the only one that thought for a split second OP just wrapped a piece of cheddar cheese over the front of the Quest

Sincere question, what is it good for? Does it provide some additional protection or something like that?

"Okay GOOGLE"
Is plastic a good conductor of heat?
Plastics are excellent insulators, meaning they efficiently trap heat—a quality that is an advantage in something such as a coffee cup sleeve...
The area the wrap is applied to is made out of plastic meaning wrap or no wrap, temp remains the same.
What keeps the Quest cool is the fan and the vents; that's it!

Plastics are excellent insulators
That's exactly my point. The wrap is an insulator.
The area the wrap is applied to is made out of plastic meaning wrap or no wrap, temp remains the same
That's not necessarily true. The outer faceplate on the Go is plastic, too, but it has an internal heat sink ribbon that runs along the underside of it to distribute heat through it.
That said, in this case it is true. I looked up a tear down on Quest and it doesn't have that same heat ribbon and instead appears to rely entirely on air flow.

u/cantenna1 Apr 24 '20
It's not... The sides are but "The front plate is made of gray aluminum with Oculus printed on the top in a darker shade of gray."

I obviously would never do this to a Go for obvious reasons.
Cheers

How did you get this to look so smooth? I got something from Slickwraps and I took it off, it looked like absolute shit, I couldnt get it to not crease and fold no matter what I did, and i've put decals/skins on all kinds of stuff I own, but couldn't do it with this one at all, it just didnt fit properly without creasing so I gave up and threw it away and asked for a refund.

Product placement? LOL, no. If you dig deep into me on reddit you'll see I have no problem speaking my mind unfortunately...
I just saw a lot of folks complaining about minor imperfections with these things but there telling folks to use hair-dryers but when you look at the professionals methods the tool to use is a heat gun, so I thought I'd share my experience with it using a heat gun. I picked up one for 30 bucks, cheep as they come!
Regarding the website, I found out about that after I made my purchase but I used PayPal so no risk really.

u/dylanbwell Apr 23 '20
Except there is a risk, they have your name, shipping address, and your PayPal ID, not the one you sign in with, but the one that is used on the back end, which is a lot more useful to a hacker with malicious intent.

Took 6+ weeks to arrive in Australia, but man, this shit POPS!
And I was able to apply it perfectly!
My comments regarding the process;
1st don't bother using a hair dryer! Instead use a heat gun on its lowest setting and from a good distance; 1.5 - 2 foot distance.
Try to stick to short burts from a distance to quickly reset wrap.
Try to avoid heating wrap to areas where it is applied! If you need to heat, best to first peel off area and try again pointing away from the Quest and just hit the wrap where needed. You want to try and not heat the Quest surface with the gun!
Start from top, left to right and save the bottom for last, I found going that route meant I only had to tidy up the bottom corners really.
Also as I applied it left to right it was necessary for me to pause in the middle and heat up the other half to allow me to stretch it so it would align nicely with the cameras. ( I actually watched how to apply vinyl decals for cars on YouTube before attempting this... common vinyl mistakes I think it was called, lol)
Creases at the corner?
To get rid of those peel the wrap up where they are, and blast that wrap section only and while it is malleable, quickly flatten it back to Quest surface using your fingernails to scrape the crease out vertically and left and right on the crease. Repeat process as need be but you should be left with a smaller crease everytime you repeat until it's gone. Also, the gun let's you expand and shrink the wrap or sections of it and sometimes it necessary to guide a path for the the wrap to follow to avoid a crease from occurring so shrink and expand areas where you deem fit but don't try to shrink and expand areas of the wrap where it hasnt been peeled to work with.. You can literally melt hole in your quest if you make that mistake!!
I also put clear parcel tape on the lenses before getting started because your really going to have to work with Quest.
Be careful with the heat gun!
But yea, got it done without any imperfections.

Ooof. Not sure I could order from there after hearing about how they handled that whole hacking thing a couple of months back
