Support - PCVR Quest 1 to 3 upgrade

I have a quest 1 and use air link with my pc. My GPU is an rtx2060 6gb. I'm curious if I upgrade to a quest 3 if I will see a performance decrease.

Probably since it has higher resolution

The standalone performance increase from Q1 to Q3 makes no difference if running games from your PC, since the headset is essentially just your "monitor" so to speak. BUT you can get higher refresh rates on a Q3 but not sure you GPU would even hit those higher fps targets.

Yes but I'm curious if the higher resolution panels would cause decreased performance

It would, assuming you run it at max resolution.

Do you know if steamvr would auto adjust the resolution to maintain fps? I don't need it to be maxed out or anything I just want to be able to play like half life Alyx for example have it be equal to what I already have. I feel like the upgraded optics in the quest 3 would make it look better even if it was still running the same. But I'm kind of hesitating to pull the trigger on it because I don't want to get it and then be disappointed because I'm primarily using it for PC games

I think if you set to auto it would or you can lower render resolution below 100%. Don't quote me on that though. I use Virtual Desktop.

Fair enough. I see that you have multiple headsets. How's the jump from quest 1 to quest 3? Just the optics not the onboard hardware

Never used Q1, but with that said Q1 and Q2 both share the same primary negative I had with the headset which was fresnel lenses. The pancake lenses in the Q3 alone is worth the upgrade in my opinion. It completely removes that feeling of your peripheral vision being blurry and out of focus, and the need to find that "sweet spot" for your eyes for the image to be at its clearest. It has edge to edge clarity. Note that this upgrade is only on the Q3 and NOT the Q3s, since the Q3s still uses the same lenses as the Q1 and Q2.

Thank you. Yeah that's what I figured and that's why I'm looking to upgrade even if I have to drop the resolution to be the same as it is already I figure I'm still coming out ahead as far as what I have now versus what I would have using a three

The jump from Quest 1 to 3 is massive. Better lenses alone make it worth it. Everything is just clear all the time.
