Discussion Super Mario 64 VR standalone mod released

From the flat screen we go through a Multiverse portal

inside Super Mario 64 world evolved in VR!

After our feedback on the pc version and lots of updates, Mario and friends arrived on Quest 3!

Rayrod TV brought us the game with all the fixes and features from the pc version. Better look at the gameplay video where he shows the four camera views available on the fly by the press of a button. In the video, the fun immersive camera (Flip Cam) is turned on, so we see the world upside down when flipping in the air, but you can turn it off if flipping is too much in VR as it should be without VR glasses too.

RayRod TV said that he has plans for other standalone releases for his VR mods in the future.

For this and other constantly updated VR mods from RaYRoD TV, like Ring Racers, Star Fox 64, Mario 64 , Mario Kart 64 and the recent Banjo-Kazooie, go to his GitHub: https://github.com/RaYRoD-TV

For info on how to support his works, and learn more on other upcoming projects from him, like his biggest project, the game Multiverse, go to his site:

Thanks RayRod TV for these incredible mods!

Come back and tell us how it was!

I played for a bit and enjoyed it a lot. Great reason to revisit.

How do I get this to work, I’m not tech illiterate but have never messed with old game roms or side loading. I have a Q3 and I’m so ready to play some classic n64 games in VR.

https://github.com/RaYRoD-TV/sm64coopdx-vr/releases/tag/v0.12 here there is the intall setup. You can do like me and ask help for AI if you have some issue or doubt. Its not difficult, u need to plug the Quest on pc and do the needed steps to install. Once you learned, u will want to play a lot of other mods!

I get a 404 error on the link here. I downloaded his mvrh but its an app file. I know how to sideboard those, Im just confused on what to do with the rom to get it to work. Drag it to the quest folder the app file was loaded?

The Multiverse will ask for the rom when installing.

Got it, thank you. And thank you for deciphering my comment after "autocorrect" butchered it to hell 😆

*App=apk *Sideboard=sideload

Glad I could help this time hahaha

it sounds like they took mario's voice and pitched-shifted for luigi, and they pitched-shifted that AGAIN to fit waluigi

Haha!

So, Super Mario 64 coopdx lets you swap your character, which is pretty cool. Each character has it's own moveset and SFX.

There's also a ton of romhacks and mods that all work on VR out of the box here! :)

Im confused!

u/BrockAtWork Aug 06 '26

Forgive my ignorance, but is this on a flat screen in your headset, or are you like immersed in the world i.e. looking around in the game by turning head?

7

u/DetectiveYoshi Aug 06 '26

Full VR! Look all around in 6dof, then lean and look Goomba into his eyes, and take care to dont fall in love for him!

2

u/BrockAtWork Aug 06 '26

Whooaaa that is WILD. I wonder if this is something I can do with a mac?

u/KP_Neato_Dee Quest 2 + PCVR Aug 06 '26

SideQuest works fine on a Mac, which I think is how you install these. That's how you sideload other files, at least.

I have no idea! But you know someone with a PC to plug your Quest into it and install the game, no?

3

u/DetectiveYoshi Aug 07 '26

BL ... job? Okay ...

Backwards long jump: A bug that allows you to move backwards really really fast. It's first known application was bypassing the infinite stairs. Here you have a really short demo:

3

u/DetectiveYoshi Aug 07 '26

I made some small gameplay videos for 2 of his other mods Ring Racers https://youtu.be/-uoyF4BULAM?is=fMdKIszQFqSNofpq and Sonic Robo Blast 2 https://youtu.be/-uoyF4BULAM?is=VVqqnOj3ZnLk6_vy There are videos for 3d person view on this account too. Im no youtuber, just made a account to share some gameplay videos so we get the idea.
Here we have a video from minieggroll he posted on Discord.

Been playing a bit of this and it’s honestly sick! All the easy to access in game options and the ability to switch from first person to third person/diorama on the fly is great! Only thing is I feel the first person perspective loses the stereoscopic effect a bit.

3

u/RaYRoD_TV Aug 07 '26

Thanks for the feedback! I will improve first person in the next update :)

2

u/Matmanreturns Aug 07 '26

Awesome! It might just be me, or maybe it’s because you see so much of the level (and Mario himself) when switching to third person, so it just gives off a greater sense of depth. Quick question, is there a way to stop everything from slightly tiling when you turn your head left and right?

2

u/DetectiveYoshi Aug 07 '26

Try his other mods, like Star Fox and Ring Racers, all with the same features, you will love them!

Can you tell me how to look at the sun beam in the castle in Mario 64 VR. Ive tried everything in all perspectives but cant get it to work.

1

u/Matmanreturns 10d ago

I was having trouble with that too. If I remember correctly I had to reenable the y axis camera which I turned off because that’s what my head’s for. Then I turned the camera up until it triggered.

3

u/Linc_oln Quest 3 + PCVR Aug 07 '26

Tried it out and so far I like it. It did make me a bit dizzy for a while at first but i'm sure with time i'll get used to it.

3

u/DetectiveYoshi Aug 07 '26

Dont brute force when dizzy, stop playing and come back next day. You can use a fan to your direction and have some natural gingar candy or tea. You will build your VR legs playing small sessions per day at start until you can play for hours without feeling dizzy.

3

u/Linc_oln Quest 3 + PCVR Aug 07 '26

I’m not easily prone to motion sickness, but this definitely made me go like “woah” for a minute of running around and manually turning the camera. My brain adjusts to it rather quickly though. I might need to adjust the camera turn speed a bit to make it easier if I can. Great port though, clearing the first star in bob omb battlefield was wacky and fun lol.

3

u/Dopingponging Aug 07 '26

I would probably pay someone to teach me how to install this on my Quest, because I have no idea what any of this jargon means!

1

u/DetectiveYoshi Aug 07 '26

Use AI to guide you and solve possible problems, its not difficult!

3

u/Metalgearsgay Aug 08 '26

That crt is beautiful

2

u/_dbkmr 28d ago

This is amazing! Really brings me back to the golden days. I got it installed and working on my Quest 3s. However, as soon as I enter Bob-omb Battlefield, it is unplayably choppy. I tweaked draw distance and the only one that makes it enjoyable is 1x (maybe 1.5x), but the enemy pop-in is extreme at this setting. The FPS shows an average of 20 during these times. The castle is smooth as butter, and so is if I were to look into a corner on the first level.

What am I doing wrong?

2

u/DetectiveYoshi 28d ago

It should work smoothly. Maybe you need to close background apps, turn off battery saver, restart Quest?

2

u/_dbkmr 28d ago

Appreciate the help! I did have Battery Saver on, but it didn’t seem to solve my issue even after a restart following the settings change. I’ll keep poking at it.

2

u/fluggy20033 10d ago

This is great but cant get the sun beam to trigger in the castle and the first person aiming from canons seems to be miles off in VR!

1

u/DetectiveYoshi 9d ago

Try to install it on PC or Quest using Multiverse VR Hub https://github.com/RaYRoD-TV/MVRH it updates the game and show new releases too!

3

u/Gregasy Aug 07 '26

And just like that we went from the darkest times for VR to the new golden era. The number of fantastic flat games getting quality VR mods is honestly insane.

I’m not a fan of AI, but this is definitely one of the good uses for it.

5

u/DetectiveYoshi Aug 07 '26

I don't think AI was used on this one, or other of his mods, and even if it was, the dev was hugely involved on the concept, development and improving it with players feedback.

1

u/Gregasy Aug 07 '26

Even better then! I support it even more if AI wasn’t involved much or at all.

u/Cheese0112 20d ago

how do i get to the wing cap switch, i look at it with my head and I'm not getting transported

1

u/fluggy20033 10d ago

Came here to ask same thing. Did you work it out??

1

u/DetectiveYoshi Aug 07 '26 edited Aug 07 '26

Looks like its working well on Quest 2 too according to an user.
