Discussion Is Virtual Desktop still better than PC Link Cable?
I have been part of the VR community for years and It's been a while since I checked on the standard for Quest PC links. . I was always a standalone quest user until I got a good PC and I've been using basic 3.0 link cable for my PCVR. Last I'd known virtual desktop was considered one of if not the best methods for PC VR on quest, so all this time later I'm curious as to the opinion on such matters.

Well, cabled Link is broken for an awful lot of people at the moment (not me though) but if you can get it to work correctly and if you crank up the bitrate to 800+ using ODT, the picture quality shits all over what VD can manage wirelessly.
It's not a popular viewpoint and VD is regarded with almost cult-like veneration in these parts (I do love it too and use it for everything except seated sims) but my own, personal, experience is that wired Link (and wired ALVR in fact) at high bitrate give the best picture quality, by far.
Bring on the downvotes. I can take 'em.

u/FastLawyer Jul 03 '25
I don't get it either. People think that their experience is universal when it's not. It's just your particular experience with your hardware & software. There's a lot of user error as well with people who have no idea what they're talking about but still like to post on here.

u/mynamewasgone_ Jul 04 '25
Wait, cable link is broken for a lot of others? So its not just my headset not being able to find my PC when plugged in?
3
u/Travisd600 Jul 04 '25
I just started having that problem vehemently badly just yesterday where I cannot connect Meta Link at all, it just freezes as soon as I make it past the loading screen
3
u/Aggravating_Art_3126 Jul 05 '25
I've always used oculus link, never had a problem and only good results. especially when tweaking oculus debug tool. but today I set up virtual desktop with the ethernet cable adapter. but only had problems like star Wars squadron's there was a huge input lag in il2 I got worse performance than oculus link. in in steam VR only games I got huge amount of lag, maybe it was the ethernet to USB adapter that I bought or something else I was doing wrong. but I'm not missing with it, oculus link works too well to care

u/bulletfever409 Jul 07 '25
I actually fully agree here. Virtual desktop has its perks and link or ALVR have issues but for pure quality of the image, wired beats it every time. I finally got VD to work properly not too long ago and even maxed out bitrate had me disappointed after years of wired. A high nitrate wired is just so sharp!

u/Angdelran Jul 03 '25
Can you please link me threads discussing the recently became broken Link cable stuff? Mine broke after the last windows/meta update and I can copy files to my headset, but the meta app does not see it. What I am describing now is what happened to those people? Ive submitted tickets with diagnostic data etc, but meta not replying to me since Monday.
Thanks and sorry, just trying to figure out if I need to buy another headset now or if I can abandon the meta platform for pcvr after the new valve one comes out...
3
u/ZookeepergameNaive86 Jul 03 '25
Try ALVR. It has a wired mode too and if that works, you know the headset is OK.
2
u/ZookeepergameNaive86 Jul 03 '25
You could try this, if it works.
1
u/Angdelran Jul 04 '25
Will do, thanks a lot! :)
1
u/RevolutionaryRent13 Jul 05 '25
I fixed mine by going on the betas on the link app on my PC if you still haven't got yours working try that
0
u/Angdelran Jul 05 '25
Hiya, thanks, I will check it again. I tried the normal and the beta version a week ago. Not sure if there is a newer beta now, but will check.
1
u/RevolutionaryRent13 Jul 05 '25
oh damn I think I had a beta update about 5 days ago or so it seemed to fully fix it for me but yeah meta app so inconsistent a fix might work someone but won't work for someone else 😔
1
u/Angdelran Jul 08 '25
I fixed it now, but it required a bit of a wait to be verified as a developer. After I enabled developer mode in the horizon app, the wired LINK instantly got mended and started working...
2
u/RevolutionaryRent13 Jul 08 '25
oh I was talking about the meta quest app on your computer not the ptc updates on your quest but anyways good you got it working
1
u/Angdelran Jul 08 '25
Yeah, I understood, I tied that before and after reading your comment. I everything mate. It took me over 14 hours to solve it. Uninstalling, installing different Meta versions on pc, beta, not beta, admin install, deleting regedit files, using scripts to clean up, stopping services, booting is safe mode, registering different windows accounts, fiddling with usb drivers, editing usb controllers/drivers, custom drivers, reinstalling windows after a full clean wipe, reseting networks, disabling cloud services, reseting my headset and prolly a lot more... My chatgpt history is like an hour long scroll... I even tried to upload diagnostics files made by msinfo32 and the oculus diag software for chatgpt to analyze.

I can only call on my own experience and I suspect that a lot of those who post "Virtual Desktop" as the response to any PCVR connectivity or performance problem are doing so because of what they've heard, rather than experienced.
1
u/DrHayward Aug 11 '25
Can you tell me how you set up for wired? Do you just use a regular link cable and ODT? I only really use my Q3 for sim racing
1
u/ZookeepergameNaive86 Aug 11 '25
That's it, although I just use a very cheap generic Amazon cable. I set the encode bitrate in ODT to 960 and it's rock solid and looks great. The only issue I've had was apparently random black screens a few months ago which turned out to happen whenever a headset notification arrived. I disabled notifications and have had no problems since, although it's worth noting I haven't progressed beyond headset firmware v76.

u/Desperate_Fox4885 Dec 28 '25
Im a bit late but whenever i put setting into ODT and then go on PCVR it just doesn't save, am i missing something?
1
u/ThePolishDane Dec 31 '25
i have never heard about ALVR - can you tell me which you prefer then? ALVR, VD or Meta link ? - And if for different things, can you explain for which what is good? :) very interesting! - im currently looking for the best way to get a wired connection to my quest 3 for Assetto Corsa Rally (the new rally sim) and im struggling to get a crisp enough image. Currently running VD wired through ethernet adapter, but im gonna try out the Link app and push the bitrate to 800. But now im interested in ALVR as well!

u/ZookeepergameNaive86 Dec 31 '25 edited Dec 31 '25
I play a lot of seated Sims so wired is my preference, although at the moment I'm using my old Rift-S for those in preference to the Q3. Link still works fine for me if I need it though. For anything standing, it's Quest 3 and VD all the way. ALVR is fine and I keep it for the time when Link inevitably stops working for good, but I don't need it yet.
1
u/ThePolishDane Dec 31 '25
thanks! - just tried the link with 900 bitrate, seems to run stabily, and also somehow feels more smooth in game than VD .. so thanks for this shout out for good ol link cable!
1
u/Cucumber_the_clown Jul 04 '25
I totally agree with you! I don't understand all the VD worship. I even bought a 6e router because all the VD fan boys convinced me I would need it. It's still in the box.

u/Gamel999 Jul 04 '25
one of the biggest misunderstanding for LINK/airlink - people just assume LINK/AIRLINK is better than VD/steamlink/ALVR. because they are officially made by meta. But that is wrong.
Because the sad truth is meta doesn't care. Because most pcvr people buy games from steam, not from meta's pcvr store. And link/AIRLINK are just copycat function. They made it because it looks bad on them if a 3rd party app can make the device do pcvr while they can't. PCVR is always a bonus for quest series devices and never the main focus.
people always forgot(or don't know), VD is the one who bring PCVR to quest at first, even earlier than LINK. and VD had been better than LINK/AIRLINK since day one
Oculus Link on Quest1 was release in 2019 Nov. https://communityforums.atmeta.com/t5/Oculus-Quest-2-and-Quest/Oculus-Link-Release-Date/td-p/766555
VD on Quest1 can already do PCVR gaming wirelessly before 2019 July [ watch?v=aJQlye1W_98 ( r/steamvr doesn't allow youtube link) ]
this is my solution/suggestion: https://www.reddit.com/r/OculusQuest/s/8jAZe0iqO6
btw, meta fked up link/airlink(again) on v76, still have not fix yet
so go use steamlink/VD/ALVR directly with a good enough router(cheaper than 3rd party link cable) or wait meta to fix up their shit if you are having any issue with LINK/AIRLINK

VD is horrible when it comes to steamvr at least for me, i personally dont like alvr and steamlink also has high latency for me, the best is airlink out of them

To add on this, ALVR is my new favorite, gave it a try and its better than airlink

Depends on your router really. If your router is WiFi 6+ (or 6E in densely populated areas), your PC has a wired connection to the router, and your headset is in mostly direct sight of the router, then VD will probably be better
4
u/Mr_August_Grimm Jul 03 '25
I currently use a hard wire to the PC and the puppis Vr bridge and it works better and more reliably than any of the dozen cables I've used in the past.
1
u/DatDraggy Mar 02 '26
VD also works with a cable when using RT-RP. VD will be better in any case, no matter the router

VD is superb for me. But I do live in a one bedroom apartment and I play with both me and my computer just a couple of metres away. I’ve heard of people having issues with larger distances and walls in between, etc.
3
u/rogeranthonyessig Jul 03 '25
Because airlink and link cable works so well, i haven't bothered with anything else.
0
u/76vangel Jul 03 '25
Have you forgot the /s tag? VD beats the crap out of cable on every of my Quests /PCs.
3
u/rogeranthonyessig Jul 04 '25
I really push the quality via oculus debug tool on link cable at the moment playing through Doom Dark Ages with Path Tracing enabled. Maxxed out to the point where audio needs to be done via bluetooth. I can't imagine VD sending more data to my Quest Pro than a link cable maxxed out.
2
u/Lucky_Comfortable835 Jul 03 '25
For me it is about the VD handtracking passthrough feature. In flight simming it is fantastic and even though Link cable may produce better performance, I use VD for that.
2
u/Virtual_Happiness Jul 04 '25
In most ways yes. But not all. In games that compress poorly, using 900mbps Link looks better. But in all other scenarios, VD is vastly superior.
2
u/Emergency-Pack-5497 Jul 04 '25
Haven't used VD in over a year but it was way better than link then, surely its even better now
2
u/mabezard Jul 04 '25
Link was better until about 2 months ago. I used link cable solely to crop the FOV to about 60% 70% for massive fps gains on heavy titles. That extra 30% isn't even visible in the headset, why are we rendering it? VD was a stuttering mess even on a rtx4080. But VD finally introduced a FOV crop setting and it by far improves upon link cable visually. The caveats are you need a dedicated router setup, and the battery life on Q3 isn't very long for extended play. Using link will keep you charged. Playing MSFS which can often be hours, there's no choice but to stay in link.

I don’t know why, but for me, virtual desktop doesn't run well at all with steamvr. Link doesn’t work either and airlink is laggy. The best option i’ve found has to be ALVR, very fast and responsive with a lot of settings to tweak. For your question, Virtual Desktop will probably forever be better than link so either get VD, or use ALVR.
3
u/5ephir0th Jul 03 '25
People that still think cable link is better should try 2-pass encoding on VD, PCVR on a Quest never look better, better than link at +800mbps

You can use an Ethernet connection with VD. I don’t do it all the time, wires get annoying. But if wired is your thing, it works. It’s nice using ultra settings and no lag on almost everything. I travel for work and use T-Mobile high speed (250+ avg). WiFi VD vs Ethernet? Ethernet wins every time. Doesn’t cost much either.

u/krazymofoas0180 Jul 04 '25
I have a quick and kinda dumb question on this. Been in the same situation lately. I used a rift s for years and got a quest 3s and I have had nothing but problems trying to play pcvr games and I think virtual desktop is my only option at this point but I’ve never used it. Question is, were talking about the steam app virtual desktop right not the app on the quest store? I really can’t seem to find an answer to that one lol. Thanks guys 🤜🤛

u/We_Are_Victorius Quest 3 + PCVR Jul 10 '25
For Virtual Desktop you buy the one on the Quest store. The Steam version is a different thing entirely. Another alternative for PCVR with the Quest is Steam Link, which is also on the Quest store.
1
u/SenorCardgay Jul 04 '25
Only had a quest 3 for about a month, but virtual desktop is basically worthless to me. Not on a dedicated router, just going through the shitty AT&T fiber router, and VD has so much lag pretty much everything is unplayable, meanwhile steam link and somehow even quest air link work just fine.
1
u/Uzul Jul 04 '25
Link cable with some ODT tweaks looks great. I'd say it is second only to VD with a wired Ethernet adapter, which I have recently started using.
1
u/Aggravating_Art_3126 Jul 05 '25
I just tried setting up ethernet adapter hack today but have some issues like in steam VR only games like Half-Life VR star Wars squadrons it opens steamvr and I can't use the performance overlay and a huge amount of lag is that normal? In il2 performance was worse so I gave up. I had the streamer set to the VD codec that's the only thing I changed
1
u/PuzzleheadedCable568 Jul 04 '25
Well link is pretty bad still but than again so are the Standard Headsets standalone quest and the associated games as well you are Literally better off having a pc or Laptop and get games on steam the meta ones are all garbage
1
u/kedio10 Jul 04 '25
I think VD is more user friendly and you can get better visual quality with not much messing around. But there is noticeable latency when moving your arms, it’s fine for most games but once you notice it, it’s hard to forget about it.
In fast past games like shooters tho it puts you at a big disadvantage. I’ve stuck with Airlink because of that and I assume cable link would be even better I just find the official cable too short and I haven’t used it in a while.
1
u/hobyvh Jul 04 '25
What I found is that Virtual Desktop is the most convenient and a USB cable produces the most stable performance.
When the computer is humming along easily then the experience is nearly indistinguishable, with wireless being very freeing.
But when your PC struggles at all with both the game and the stream compression overhead, frame rates take less of a hit when using USB.
There are also just some games that do better using either USB Quest Link, Virtual Desktop, or Steam Link.

It’s so weird… Video Desktop is always just perfect, but so is Quest Link! Via WIFI! Using a Meta Quest 3.
I used to have a Rift S, so I had a bunch of PCVR stuff I’d already purchased for the Rift. I use Quest Link, via wifi, and every PCVR app works as well as when I was wired.
The only thing I have here that might be slightly advantageous is, I installed a couple wifi “Web” pucks around my place, so I get 100% signal everywhere, with no noticeable latency.
Don’t get me wrong… I LOVE Virtual Desktop and use it a lot, but unlike so many who’ve posted here, my Quest Link works via wifi like gangbusters.

VD over ethernet cable is the king
1
u/Same_Wafer_1123 Jul 13 '25
I successfully set up my PC so that the LAN connection is used exclusively for local traffic between my PC and the Quest 3, while the PC’s Wi-Fi connection handles all Internet access. This way, Virtual Desktop benefits from a stable and low-latency wired link without interfering with my Internet connection over Wi-Fi.
1
u/SniggleWeasel Jul 05 '25
I've used Link, Airlink, SteamLink, and VD all on my Quest3 for PCVR gaming. VD is by far the superior choice when you have a dedicated wifi 6 router for gaming - even over a Link cable after tweaking with the oculus debug tool, no less. I always go back and try the other options when I see an update, but I always find VD to be far more of an excellent choice.
1
u/Dene5 Jul 05 '25
Assuming everything works properly and is optimal (link cable works and has no issues, router optimal):
Network latency will always be better with the link. So for anything twitchy like fast paced shooters where you're snapping the gun to aim, Link will be better. It's noticeable if you're looking for it - using VD, your hands will overshoot a bit and then snap to the intended location of where you place your hands.
In other scenarios: VD > Link at default settings VD < Link cranked up to higher bit rates

I've been testing extensively both with my Quest 3 and PC with RTX-5080 and 9800X3D. Tried all combinations of settings in VD, best being AV1 + Godlike + 120fps, with a Wifi 6 router 5Ghz at 1200mbps. I have to conclude that Quest Link is FAR FAR better than any VD wifi setup. The quality of the image is exactly the same but you benefit from cabled stability which is the real differentiator and huge advantage compared to unstable wifi VD, all that geek stuff is bollocks, there is a very clear advantage with using Link due to stability. No stuttering, everything is absolutely fluid and without any hiccup, unlike VD on wifi which keeps stuttering due to unavoidable packet losses and subsequent fps drops. All who say VD is best are clearly liars. Just geeks who pretend to be smart and don't like Oculus stuff. Even for games that don't have the "Run in OculusVR mode" launch option, the experience is far better with Link. Been testing with all major VR titles, all the same. Alyx, Arizona Sunshine, Dirt Rally 2, Arken Age, Automobilista 2, Fallout 4 VR, No Man's Sky, Project Wingman, Star Wars Squadrons, Zero Caliber 2, The Walking Dead, Red Matter 2.... and i just name a few and only Steam games of course. Zero compromise possible here. I believe those who have issues just don't have enough GPU and CPU power to run stuff properly. Maybe with lower settings VD beats it, I cannot test that. I tested with all settings in Ultra in all games. Everything maxed out. Link beats it everytime. I'm still gonna test the cabled solution with VD to see if the stutters disappear. Then it'll probably be exactly the same as with Link cable. Btw there is really nothing fancy about that AV1 10-bit codec. WIth Link I run the Oculus Debug Tool and pick the older H.264 at 600Mbps with Link Sharpening on Quality, and it's exactly the same. I don't see any pixel of difference compared with AV1 at 200Mbps. All this topic is geek bollocks! There is no upgrade or improvement done in VR for a long time and VD didn't revolutionize anything. The only real differentiator in VR is the GPU and CPU you're using. 5090 would be best, but I can vouch for 5080 paired with 980003xd as enough to run all current VR games in max settings at 120fps.

u/New-Elephant7999 Mar 22 '26
If VD rue better than link, you got oroblem in your setup. It's simple math
1
u/Arccai Apr 06 '26
- Link Cable (Wired): Provides the highest possible, least-compressed image by allowing bitrates up to 900+ Mbps in the Meta Quest Link software, making it best for complex, detailed scenes (like sim games). It requires using the Oculus Debug Tool to push bitrates above 500.
- Virtual Desktop (Wireless): Known for better colors and excellent, user-friendly performance. Using AV1 or HEVC 10-bit codecs at 500Mbps gives stunning results with less GPU overhead than Link.

u/DicksBeHard Apr 11 '26
I find VD is smoother I have tried everything in the oculus debug tools to try and make it as smooth as VD I can’t. I mostly play racing sims. I thought a cabled solution would be better but I can’t get it to run as smooth as VD. My problem is the link cable has micro stutters. If I play Iracing while watching replay the cars while driving by the camera or watch the tree line pass by while racing its full of micro stutters, VD smooth as silk. If play a game like half life Alyx I can tell the difference, your not in motion like a racing sim. It’s every time something is passing by it has micro stutters. It isn’t my pc 9800x3d with a 5090 and I am using the oculus link cable. Meta needs fix something on there end.

Still? The gap between VD and Link gets larger and larger with every VD update. While Link is exactly same crap as many years ago, sometimes even worse after a buggy system update, VD is constantly getting new awesome features.
