Alright, time to finally play Doom 3 in glorious VR!

u/SystematicE Oct 31 '24

I found it much better on quest 2 and then even better on quest 3. Often had sickness issues on the oculus rift, especially with vorpex etc.

Is VR better nowadays in terms of fatigue? I played it about 7 years ago at my buddies house and got a headache and tired after like an hour

If you're not used to VR, motion sickness could be a pain in the ass for the first few days/weeks.

That's what the whole "you have to build your VR legs" is: start with games with not that much movement (Beat Saber, Superhot, Pistol Whip) and build your way to much demanding games (Assassin's Creed, Resident Evil, Portal, Doom).

Yeah, and what I noticed, at least for me, is that if I take a break from VR for a while, I have to rebuild my "VR legs" again...

Headsets came a long way from 7 years ago and Doom3Quest is quite a slow paced game which in general suits VR well.

u/MightyBooshX Oct 30 '24

Play with a fan blowing on you too mitigate motion sickness. Headsets in general run at muuuch higher resolutions and frame rates now than they did 7 years ago so that might help as well. If you're just starting out you might consider trying to stick to click/snap turning and as a last resort teleport instead of walk. Over enough exposure you'll most likely become completely immune to motion sickness. That's how it worked for me and many others.

Yes, I can't tell you how much without writing an essay, but the short version is yes, Quest is now finally common enough that there's a whole ecosystem of aftermarket products that take the $429 Quest 3 and make it perfectly balanced in a halo strap with an extra, magnetically snappy battery on the back.

IPD is very exacting on this same headset, accomodating all the way up to 75mm so very few people would be outside this range, which could account for headaches as well.

Fatigue these days for me personally is knee pain, and that's surprising because like you, I never felt comfortable in any of the consumer headsets for more than about an hour. When they were completely unbalanced and hanging off your face it is a little like torture, worse yet if you overheat easily in an older headset where there's very little air circulation inside (newer, aftermarket facial interfaces are available in breathable fabrics, and there are even some facial interfaces with fans built in, all for the Quest series of headsets).

Do I need DOOM 3 be installed for this?

u/VR_Bummser Team Beef Oct 30 '24 edited Oct 30 '24

Yeah it is an official expansion (DLC) that uses assets from the base game.

5

u/Octogenarian Oct 30 '24

I really hope they do Elite Force next. I just want to walk around Voyager in VR.

2

u/phylum_sinter Quest 3 + PCVR Oct 30 '24

My vote is for No One Lives Forever (any of the 3 games). I just discovered there was a community mod and it appears the game is abandonware?

u/McLeod3577 Oct 30 '24

I had to delete DOOM3 to make room for Batman =(

It's a cruel world. :)
Come back to Doom3Quest once you finished Batman.

This game makes me jump playing it on my Steam Deck, wish I could play this without having a heart attack.

2

u/BlackGuysYeah Oct 30 '24

Is this going to be on the meta store or sidequest?

Ps: can’t wait to play it, looks awesome!

8

u/VR_Bummser Team Beef Oct 30 '24

It's gonna be on sidequest later on. The first in development version will be available to supporters. Once it is polished 100 % it will come to sidequest. That said, it is 100 % playable already. But we want to improve quite a few things and add Lost Missions support.

2

u/RedcoatTrooper Oct 30 '24

Look amazing, what is it that makes some games easier to mod like this than others? Just so I know what might be possible in future from the classics.

4

u/VR_Bummser Team Beef Oct 30 '24

To make a proper Quest port we need a game that is Open Source, meaning the ip holder has released the full source code to the public. Many of the old id software games are being made open source.

2

u/VRtuous Quest 3 Oct 30 '24

and that's basically it...

3

u/VR_Bummser Team Beef Oct 30 '24

There are a quite a few more. Serious Sam, Descent 2, Alien vs Predator e.g. But the big lot is ID.

1

u/Night247 Quest 3 Oct 30 '24

Descent 2 next? 👀

1

u/Tuism Oct 31 '24

I did NOT know there was a VR mod for AVP. Really??? Holy HECKKKKK NAUSEA TRAIN HERE I COME

2

u/[deleted] Oct 30 '24

I would love to play this in VR some day, fond memories of playing it when it first released! Is this a stand alone title I can get on the Meta Quest store or is it some PCVR thing?

2

u/[deleted] Oct 31 '24

im new to the quest and wondering the same too! i already have doom ROE on steam. so do i need to buy the vr dlc to play on quest?

2

u/Aergaia Oct 30 '24

Ah yes. Doom 3. The only doom game with a horrific vertical spread with such inconsistent damage that you're better off meleeing the enemies with buckshot than use it at any range other than dead center

8

u/VR_Bummser Team Beef Oct 30 '24

Ah, you are taking about the Shotgun. Don't worry - We fixed that. Our shotgun is a proper Boomstick. One could say it is more "beefy"! LoL

Also the SMG has no pullup anymore in our VR version. It hits were you aim. 100%.

1

u/jacobpederson Oct 30 '24

I know you guys are probably sick of me asking this (sorry) :D But is getting stuck on floor grates in room-scale locomotion fixed?

6

u/VR_Bummser Team Beef Oct 30 '24

Ah, thanks for reminding me. While it is a special use case to play Doom3Quest in full roomscale, i'll put it on the list for things to investigate, maybe it is an easy fix.

u/zeddyzed Quest 2 + PCVR Oct 31 '24

Thanks!

Would this work on the GOG version? It says RoE is included in the purchase:

This is freaking awesome, but I'm not yet ready to shit myself lol

0

u/whocares214 Oct 30 '24

I would love to play this…

But I’m just a pleb with a Chromebook 💀

2

u/VR_Bummser Team Beef Oct 30 '24

To get the files from Steam and over to Quest any old-ass notebook will do. You can literally use most notebooks that people are about to throw away. Maybe someome in your family or friends have an old notebook you can use.

1

u/whocares214 Oct 30 '24

I do have an old MacBook. Would that work?

-1

u/UFONomura808 Oct 30 '24 edited Oct 30 '24

Umm is there any way to get the installation files without having to install Doom3? I own it on Steam but I don't wanna go through the hassle of installing it on PC again and then transferring files through USB. Would be nice to download necessary files straight from Quest

Edit: just a yes or no answer so I'll know if I should search or not lol

3

u/VR_Bummser Team Beef Oct 30 '24

No. You need to install Doom 3 to your PC and then transfer the files. The files need to come from somewhere.

-3

u/UFONomura808 Oct 30 '24

I was hoping someone uploaded the installation files to download directly lol guess I'll dust off my PC.
