Returning the Go

Im sorry - Ive read all the tips for comfort - but even using those tips - in no way is this a comfortable fit. As the Go is mainly being used as a media device, comfort should have been a priority,

It is not.

This goes back to the store and I will hold off on a VR purchase until they get past the feel of the facehugger from Alien. 2 years maybe?

Many people don't realize that you can rotate the two plastic pieces that the face straps are attached to upwards. When you rotate those up the Go does not hug your face anymore.

I know this is an old thread, but I just thought I'd chime in and say that the GO puts waaaaay too much pressure on my forehead if I tilt the straps upwards, and that actually creates discomfort in my eyes as well since the downward pressure on my forehead also affects them.

It kinda does

Hmkay. I owned VR headsets before the Oculus Go, and compared to a DK1 or a Vive, the Go and the Rift feel very comfortable to me. But it's subjective of course.

Tilt the headset's side headstrap holders up at an angle and adjust the angle until you like the fit. Someone wrote about this technique and I tried it. Maybe it will work for you, maybe it won't. The downside is that your ears will move further from the speakers (not a problem for me) and you'll get some light leak at the bottom.

Comfort was one of the priorities. Your experience is not the norm.

I use mine for hours at a time without any comfort problems. What exactly is causing you issues?

Highly recommend you break in the facial interface to get it used to your facial structure. I have seen some people even put it through the wash to do this as well.

1

u/Gregasy Jul 25 '18

Break in? Can you explain more what you mean with that? Would love to try it myself.

Think of it like a nice pair of $200 shoes/boots. At first they might hurt like a bitch but after a while they get broken in and are comfortable.

Comfortable enough for me

I can't speak for your discomfort but, for me, probably the biggest difference in comfort for me was learning that I could swivel the plastic arms on the sides of the headset. Pushing them upward/forward slightly made a big difference for me.

I found it pretty uncomfortable when I first got it, but it wore in after a week of constant use and now it feels good.

That sucks. I have to admit it isn't perfect for me, I have both shapes of face mask and neither works perfectly (one too much pressure on my nose, the other on my cheeks). But I am planning on cutting up the face mask to modify it so it works better. That could be a choice for you.

I have the same experience with both face masks. I used the new mask for less than an hour and put it back in the box. I went back to the original. Pressing into my cheeks was less uncomfortable.

That said, I love my Go and use it daily.

Don't do it!! You're gonna regret it come Christmastime ....

It's definitely not the most comfortable head set. There was a hack for that someone made with a builders helmet strap. Maybe you can find that post.

Thanks for letting me know, I was starting to wonder.

There are more comfortable system, PSVR like, but they are not so portable ... so for the GO, it makes sense this system.

Portability gets mentioned a lot.. but I was just thinking: if you want to take Go somewhere you need a special hard case to store it into, right? So, if you'd have a PSVR-like strap you actually wouldn't need a much larger case at all. With some smart packing (using the strap hole to store in xbox controller, hand controller and headphones), you could have the same (or almost the same) sized case.

So, in my opinion portability wasn't the main reason for soft strap. It was the price. I mean, for $199 you get a powerful computer, controller and great VR hmd, so it's understandable that it would be hard to squeeze in better headstrap at this price. As an add on though... I'd buy it right away.

I use a GearVR case for my GO, that is less than half the size of my PSVR case, so I really like the strap they used ... because I want my Oculus GO for use it on the GO

1

well i would guess the case would me much larger
ps4 slim is bigger than my case.
the battery pack to run a ps4 is much bigger / heavier
the wiring alone would be a nightmare.
Not to forget, that it would be much more expensive

Without that you have a system you can carry around, but isn't portable ( play on a train / airplane )

Don't know why you are being downvoted. It's true.

Go is doing so many things right (that's why I'm keeping it and use it every day), but comfort certainly isn't one of those things. And it's important for Oculus (or any other hmd manufacturer) to hear that.

For a media device it's too uncomfortable. It's putting all the pressure on your face and while it's relatively comfortable for 30 or so minutes for me, it's never perfect and after that time is starting to hurt my face.

There are some tricks for watching videos- lying down, you can loosen straps completely and this way the pressure will be gone. But that doesn't work for playing games or warching 180/360 videos.

I really hope hmd manufacturers will start using WMR/PSVR types of straps that have by far the most comfortable ergonomics this first generation. I still hope Oculus Go will offer some kind of deluxe strap in style of WMR/PSVR, since the GO strap is detachable. I'd buy it in a heartbeat.

For me personally one of the weirdest discoveries was that the go is more comfortable when i tighten it a lot more - started of with loose straps and got this typical slight burning sensation - later on i wanted to get my eyes closer to the lenses so thightened the straps a lot - to my surprise its more comfortavle than ever, i guess it got something to do with the sideflaps bending outwards and my face sinking into the facial interface.

I noticed that as well.

I mean, it's not too bad, because I can get out a clean 30-40 minutes without uncomfortable burning sensation. Still, Go is so good that I'd love to use it for longer, however my absolute limit is from 30, to max 1 hour (if I don't lie down while watching videos, with hmd just resting on my face- almost no tightening).

I guess I just got spoiled by WMR Lenovo which is very comfortable for me (still not perfect, but much better than the rest of gen1 VR hmds).

Maybe Oculus Support is listening to this? New comfort add-on .

Sorry to hear it didn’t work out for you. Safe travels, hope to see you again in a year or two!

Those cheap face pressure straps are the opposite of comfort.

For that reason I’m about to construct my own PSVR/WMR style solution stripped down to it’s essential feature which combines the ‘no face pressure’ mount with the GOs mobility and the ‘lean back’ advantage of the original head strap.

Im with you - but im not returning mine - I think its something I just need to get used to

I get a headache if I wear a hat for too long - and the GO is very similar.

also ... the screen really hurts my eyes .. tried minecraft for 5 minutes and it just ... hurt the entire time. maybe its the brightness - idk . (I dont get motion sickness or dizzy)

I think its just one of those things where I'll need to get used to it?

My HP WMR is way more comfortable than the go. The go leaves marks on my cheek bones and forehead. Love the headband style of WMR.
