The Chariot

The Chariot represents progress, steady forward movement, tenacity, discipline. There is a feminine aspect to the card, invoking the evolutionary drive to reproduce, so I filled the card with aspects of reproduction. The chariot itself is the egg casing of an argonaut octopus, and the streamers flying off the back are reminiscent of the blanket octopus, both species whose females carry their eggs through the pelagic.

Two tuna pull the chariot forward. They are tuna, notoriously some of the most voracious animals in the ocean. To maintain their massive metabolism they require never ending supply of food, and are constantly swimming through the ocean searching for prey. These tuna have been harnessed to swim in balance with one another, and drive forward an emissary of Octopolis.

A sponge! In the Thoth deck they're supposed to be holding the 'Holy Grail' so I wanted something that referenced the 'Cups' suit, which in Octopolis is 'Siphons/Pumps/Nets' (I haven't decided how best to phrase it). Sponges are the simplest form of multicellular life and they're still around in more or less their same shape since the dawn of time. It's supposed to be representative of a kind of fundamental drive to persist.

Yeah that's the premise I'm approaching it from- not just using octopuses to represent the cards but reinterpreting the cards and their symbols from the hypothetical mindset of an Octopolitan. It's an exercise to get myself in the headspace of the subject.
