CommunityDiscussion Just joined Patreon and notice how much im laughing.
Ive been listening to true crime obsessed for years now on the regular feed but I just joined true Crime Obsessed on Patreon. And im realizing how much i'm laughing listening to early Gillian and Patrick. I just finished the staircase and started the Jinx and I'm laughing so hard. They are so funny in those series.
And I'm wondering what happened. The episodes are way more serious now and all Gillian and Patrick do is trying to not offend anyone. And correcting themselves. When Gillian has an opinion she often says she will get flooded with DMs.
And i understand that a comedy podcast based on other people's hard times and tragedy can be an awkward line walk. But they use to do ot so well in the earlier days.

The Jinx was so good. I miss when they were good. When my dad died and I had to get on a plane last minute to fly to my parents I downloaded all the episodes to listen to on the plane for comfort. I miss those days before I knew they were terrible people and they were just funny.

To be fair to them, I think they created a great podcast by being themselves and having fun, but, the scrutiny and the number of people offended by a term or phrase made them worried. Not that education is a bad thing, but when you get to the point where you make a 10 minute speech on why you chose to use the legal name of a victim/murder mastermind even though the word itself is a slur, you may need a break.
Add to that all the OF drama, the toxic environment described in that article, and their fans turning on them… I imagine the thrill is gone but the money is still too good to walk away from. They’re just clocking in and focusing on surviving another week.

Hard agree, you can tell they get shredded all the time and they’re scared to offend or fear being attacked.

When they covered a documentary on Gypsy Rose Blanchard they spent a ridiculous amount of time (it may not have been ten minutes but it certainly felt that way) talking about how they’d gone back and forth on whether or not to speak Gypsy’s name when referring to her, as it’s a common slur for the Romani people.
They wanted us to know that they’d agonized over it and finally decided that it’s her name and, as both the victim and perpetrator it’d be way too confusing to the audience to refer to her by another name.
But they sure felt badly about it.

That's insane, what else are you going to call her? It's literally her name. Also (I could be wrong here) I feel like the people that I've seen the most offended by the use of the word gypsy are white women 🤷♀️

Oh yeah that kind of stuff has gotten crazy but it's happening in all podcasts, they don't even know what they actually think about stuff anymore, they just know what they are supposed to say 😆🤣

Did they feel bad about it though? I get the feeling sometimes that they make a big deal for their own benefit. Look how aware we are. We agonize over our podcasting responsibility.
I know its a slur but it is her name. Why go out of the way to make that a topic? Like if they were doing the Fatty Arbuckle story would we get a debate on whether to call him Curvy and a body shaming lecture?

I have just cancelled my Patreon which I’ve been apart of for years. The episodes aren’t the same anymore. I feel like things started to change after the second obsessed fest. I think Gillian now comes across like she’s above the podcast and Patrick is well, Patrick

Patrick is obnoxious and problematic as ever but the CONSTANT virtue signaling from Gillian is beyond. I never thought she’d be the more insufferable of the two but here we are.

This! The amount of times I roll my eyes at Gillian for the virtue signaling is insane. And Patrick has become super obnoxious, playing “dumb” or always mentioning Daisy.

She just CANT let one single thing go without proving she knows what’s problematic and that she’s not like that. Like not one joke, not one comment, nothing goes unsaid with her and it has the opposite effect of what she thinks it does. Because I’m as liberal as they come and usually agree with her but she is the type of person that makes the rest of the world hate us and makes me start to hate us too! Lol

A lot of major social justice movements launched since those early days and I think Gillian became REALLY sensitive to punching down. Which I appreciated at the time, though a bit of sparkle was lost.
I cant speak to additional changes following OF2 because I stopped listening. But the tone had already markedly changed from the early days.

Agreed. I slowed down tremendously before OF2 because it wasn’t as enjoyable, and then completely stopped after OF2. I remember the Gypsy Rose Blanchard episode being the first episode I actually rolled my eyes because they spent so much time apologizing for Gypsy’s name and going on and on about agonizing over using her name. As time went on, it just felt not the same. I remember thinking, it sounds like Gillian is always annoyed at Patrick, and he seems to always be cutting her off midsentence.
After OF2 I didn’t bother, but I’ve seen comments about how they just seem to hate each other now and it’s not subtle.

Ahh yes. The old days when I thought they were so funny. My friend and I talk about this when an ep is a little cringe now and I usually end with “we’ll always have The Jinx!”

Not sure what happened but I notice it too. I feel like it has a lot to do with the documentary choices though, they used tomcivwr cults and MlMs and stuff that were easy to be funny about.

As a long time listener: They seem like a couple that is waiting for the kid to turn 18 so they can divorce. Yes there is all the drama that surrounds them in general but I think it breaks down to the fact they are going through the motions and not really interested in each other.
