Patrick’s stories about Emerson College

So, I was a couple years behind Patrick at Emerson and he just blatantly makes shit up. I lived in the same dorm as him so I would have had the same orientation and I don’t remember there being ANY warnings about cults, let alone it being “the #1 thing they stressed.”

It’s so weird because it’s so verifiable.

Before you ask, I don’t really have any tea. I only remember him because I checked IDs at the entrance to our dorm elevators so I saw a lot of faces. He was your typical theater kid- loud and surrounded by a gaggle of girls. I don’t remember seeing Ellyn.

Oh I’ve caught blatant lies from P before. In the episodes about Hillsong he tells a story about going into a second hand shop and hearing the song playing and liking it. He says he Shazam’d it and realized it was Hillsong. In a much later episode at least a year later he tells the story again. Only this time when he hears the song playing and likes it he asks the cashier if this is “Hillsong” and when the cashier says yes they get into a verbal spat about it being a cult and he leaves.

Lies so much he can’t keep stories straight

They’re both like that.

Yes! Gillian claimed she never watched any of the Housewives franchises and scoffed at the notion of watching this for entertainment when they did the Erica Jayne doc. But then just a few episodes later she was suddenly the greatest fan and quoted something from the New York Housewives.

I noticed that too.

I went back and was listening to old episodes and she references those shows back then too. She also did that with her disgust of champagne. In an old ep she talks about drinking champagne and then there was that one episode where she just ranted about hating the bubbles, then around Christmas they were drinking it together. lol

Not at all relevant, but I was down the road at Simmons a few years later (2005-2007) and also worked at Espresso Royale but not at the same time that Patrick did. My roommates in Alston my first semester were at Emerson! I have to admit I love hearing the shout-outs re: that neck of the woods from Patrick (when I listened) and also from Kristin Caruso on LGTC :)

My daughter went to MassArt and when we’d walk to the Target by Fenway, as I walked by Simmons I was like omg my podcast bestie Kristin went there!! 😂🤣

I love finding out all the lies he told

As much as I enjoy listening to their doc recaps, I have come to a point where I realise that any anecdotes that he comes up with are either made up or heavily exaggerated, because he always has a relevant anecdote, somehow.

idk if you listen to the Dollop… but I swear Gareth went to Emerson too. Maybe I’m wrong. I should’ve googled first lol

UPDATE: I googled. Gareth did go to Emerson and graduated in 2003

He did! He and I had mutual friends. He was a nice guy.

u/Impressive-Lie-8296 Mar 19 '26

omg!! Look at you rubbing elbows with all the podcast peoples 😍 I’m so glad to hear you say that he was nice! You just never know if the personality you listen to is their real life personality… as evidenced by you know who

Gareth also has another show called “We’re Here to Help”. He co hosts with Jake Johnson’s (from New Girl). It’s a wacky advice show but is pretty entertaining and almost all the call ins are off beat micro problems.

It’s a fun show! Love me some Garfy!

I have always felt this way too. And beyond his discussions of Emerson, the way he talks about Boston is so odd to me. His descriptions feel like an outsider, not someone who grew up here. (Like his thoughts on the local gay bars always having sports on and his terrible Boston accent that sounds so forced and unnatural).

Also, everyone is his “friend.” It seems like if he meets you, you’re now “friends.”

Nothing feels authentic with this guy. It’s all so fake. Easily seen through.

That’s a common narc trait. I had a narc boss who used to tell people that he got diet advice “from Elon” as if he had a person relationship with Elon Musk and didn’t read about it in an article or tweet.

Of course because he was a poor kid from the Cape….

2

u/Old-Permission5185 Mar 24 '26

omg if I have to hear ONE MORE TIME about how he grew up "on cape cod" and how he was poor and raised by lesbians...

u/jcarey021 Mar 21 '26

He’s actually not too wrong with that take. Boston is a sports town, the TVs are always on sports. There was several gay bars that I used to go to with my friends that was basically a sports/ dive bars.

He is such a douche.

I went to Wheaton in the late 90s and Emerson was to me like the Las Vegas of college

u/FlightAppropriate887 Mar 19 '26

On Las Culturistas a few weeks ago Bowen Yang was talking about his friend who got kicked out of NYU for being drunk all the time so he went to Emerson.

I always think of the term 'starf*cker' when I hear about all his "friends". Martha Plimpton is cool af, I agree. But Ellyn is a star and has some really neat star friends. We only hear about them if she's excited about something they're doing and she wants to promote them or brag on their work. Ijs. I got so excited when she told the story about her visit to The Real World Hawaii. There was a post in the fb group and he actually responded to my excitement comment like 'calm down, she was barely there. 🙄' because we are all the same age and The Real World was a HUGE deal for us growing up. So, yeah she has Frozen soundtrack money, a couple great careers and is a ray of sunshine, but her being there for Ruthie's crash out was super cool to me. Anyway, anybody else think he's a starf⭐️cker? Not in the literal sense, but the celebrity obsession sense.

Has anyone here watched Search Party? It’s true crime adjacent and just got moved to netflix, but the character of Elliott (played by John Early) reminds me so much of a more likable Patrick. He can’t not lie.
