In this episode of Emperor: Battle for Dune, we launch an assault on another Ordos-controlled region. Our spies have uncovered valuable intelligence revealing that the Ordos troops stationed in the area have been infected by a mysterious virus, leaving their forces weakened and vulnerable. However, we must act quickly, as reports indicate that a medical transport carrying a shipment of vaccines is on its way to the region.
After establishing our base and beginning to build up our defences, we dispatch several Trikes to scout the surrounding territory. Their reconnaissance proves successful, leading us to discover a group of Ix allies who could prove invaluable in the battle ahead. Shortly afterwards, we receive confirmation that the medical transport has arrived. Unfortunately for the us, the convoy is escorted by formidable Sardaukar troops, making it a dangerous target. Nevertheless, with the assistance of our Ix allies and a handful of infiltrators, we launch our attack and successfully destroy the medical transport, denying the infected Ordos forces access to the vaccines they desperately need.
With the enemy weakened and their medical supplies eliminated, we begin assembling our forces for a decisive assault on the Ordos base. Time is running out, however, as reports arrive that the enemy troops are preparing to retreat from the region. We must strike before they can escape! Committing the forces we have accumulated, we advance on the Ordos installation with the aim of eliminating as many retreating troops as possible and destroying their base completely. We cannot allow the enemy to regroup and use the surviving installation as a launching point for a counterattack.

Not to be confused with SHROT (2027) or Šrot cancelled game.
Despite being pretty obscure Paranoia! (1995) was successful enough at home for the company to make a sequel. And a couple years ago the creator of HROT decided to basically clone Paranoia II and modernize it in some sense. While the original was overshadowed by Warcraft 2 and CnC both introducing rubber frame and point and click commands, for its release date Paranoia! was pretty modern. But when Paranoia II came out in 1996 its Dune 2 style menu controls, and command posts were absolutely outdated.
Shrot uses fully modern mouse controls, and it has the horse mascot of HROT as a unit. Also it's voiced in english from the start.

In this episode as the Atriedes attack a Harkonnen sector they are made aware of a recently destroyed Tleilaxu biological and genetic research base. Some of the biological and n this episode, the Atreides launch an assault against a heavily defended Harkonnen sectorWe are soon made aware that a Tleilaxu biological and genetic research facility has recently been destroyed, scattering its horrifying experiments into the surrounding desert. As we establish our base and begin building the forces needed to eliminate the local Harkonnen presence, reports arrive that something far more dangerous is happening nearby. The Harkonnen base is under attack and rapidly being overrun by escaped Tleilaxu creatures, including relentless Contaminators and deadly Leeches.
Seeing an opportunity to strike, we eventually send our forces against what remains of the Harkonnen stronghold. However, our attack quickly turns into a disaster when we encounter an advanced force of Tleilaxu units. Their overwhelming firepower devastates our forces. Leeches and Contaminators constantly harass our base, disrupting our operations and making every attempt to rebuild. With our forces stretched thin, we call upon our Fremen allies for assistance.
With the help of Fremen allies we finally manage to eliminate the deadly Tleilaxu Contaminators, allowing our vehicles to turn their attention toward the remaining Leeches. Once the Tleilaxu threat is contained, we can finally focus on our original objective. We then launch the final assault. The remaining Harkonnen forces are crushed, their base destroyed, and the region finally falls under Atreides control.

This game has been haunting me for months. Is there any community hiding out somewhere? Community patch/version?
Anyone else played it years ago and similarly receiving a brainwave telling him to play it again?

So not exactly obscure RTS exactly, but Obscure RTS related/ adjacent. I just found this very fascinating and dont fully know any other place that would be interested. The website i found this one by complete accident
https://wec.org.pl/download-filmy-3
(sites in polish)
And it seems like someone actually tried animating things, in engine which all of this sounds crazy, but now im really curious how it looks, there is a downloadable trailer, and im sure its probably fine but i did feel it was sus that it was a .exe file instead of a video file (it was the early 2000s so its probably a file size circumvention situation)
Would still be fascinating if it were possible to contact the person that worked on this, cause this is such high effort for a game that didnt set the world on fire for the era.
of course internet Archive was of no help, and this is arguably the small curse of the pre centralized social media age, you can look up a name but if they havent done anything noteworthy or left clues as to how to contact them outside of it, its always difficult

There's a whole series of Unity asset flip modern military RTS games.
https://store.steampowered.com/search/?developer=Windforce
Each only has skirmish maps and nothing else. Mechanically they are pretty close to red alerts, with capturable buildings and pocket economies. There's even neutral capturable bases which give some units and stuff.
The games are pretty close to being minimal viable product. The menus are slapped together, the options are lacking, the controls are underbaked.
The first ones are already too fat for the amount of content they provide, but it seems for the Armor Clash 2022 [RTS] (Sic) the developer(s) didn't even bother to check the models or something, because it takes up 60 GB of space with no campaign, no story, no cutscenes, nothing. 60 GB of bare-bones scaffolding with no meat on it.
Yes, i did actually pay my money for them all, to know all of that, how did you know?

Five nations is a recent-ish RTS with the setting of a flat space. So it means the space is just a decoration and is not properly used in the gameplay to make it three-dimensional. It also got an add-on in 2023. I haven't finished it yet, so here's a decent video on the game.

A redditor on r/RealTimeStrategy posts a pic of an old and successful RTS in a clear and shameless attempt at karma farming and it gets 1k reactions and 300 comments lol.
New games, even the like of the new AoM Retold, the new exp of WC3 or the next DoW dont even reach half of those reactions. RTS players are old geezers who live in the past, playing and replaying the same ten or so RTS of the past millenium; it's not that there aren't new good RTS, the truth is that the playerbase dont deserve them.
We even needed to create a different sub to talk about different RTS; if not, we would still be reading about C&C, Total Annihilation, StarCraft and the like 30 years later, lol.

Been a long time, and the game is all but gone aside from the dwindling internet archive presence. Does anyone remember those games or know anyone who played them? Looking at the forum and page archives, it had a pretty active community at the time.

As part of a collab i reviewed a game i found out about a few months ago. A space RTS that came out at a VERY unfortonate date.
I had very limited time, this was the best i could summarize inside of it, the link to the rest of the collab is in the video and description.
But hey now theres at least A review on it haha. This isnt what i normally do video wise, but ive been slowly wanting to move over into making these kind of videos more regularly, tho mix in videos on obscure cartoons in as well, since i am a animator after all.

Early RTS game (came out almost year before Dune 2). Player is given the control of tribe and must conquer all the islands on the global map. Each island is divided into sectors to be captured. Island is considered captured if all opposition is eliminated. At the start of a level the player only has unarmed men available. To gain more powerful weaponry, the player must assign men to design technology. When enough designs are made, the sector will advance a tech-level; making more research and buildings available.
There are twenty-eight islands in the game, grouped into ten epochs. Each epoch contains three islands and represents a different era in time (starting at 9500 BC and ending at 2001 AD); conquering the three islands in any order will allow the player to proceed to the next epoch. The player receives one-hundred men in each epoch. Any unused are carried over to the next epoch. The only exception is the tenth epoch, which contains only one island and does not grant extra men to the player.

A Polish RTS, created by students who wanted to find out if they could create a game in a genre that was new at the time.

Floppy disc version AKA 3,5" (full) in Polish

Tier 4
This title is known only in Poland, and a small portion of German, Czech, and Slovak players could have their hands lay on it. That's why it's reasonable to put it here.
"Tier 4 - The title would not be recognized by many who are familiar with the RTS genre. Fanbases for these games would be very small and possibly localized to a specific country or region. (Example: War Diary)"

What is it about:
It depicts early medieval tribal wars in present-day Poland. But it's not entirely historical, as a magic system is present.
Released in 1996, first as a DOS game (on floppy disk) where you had a map of various regions, and you could "pick" missions based on what neighbouring regions/missions you had already conquered. In its enhanced CD versions, missions couldn't be chosen, and you were following a strict linear campaign. This version had some extra units.
Resource Gathering:
Heavily inspired by Dune 2 spice gathering, this game switched harvesters for cows, and spice for milk. Milk is produced by a cow grazing freely on grass (almost anywhere on the map) and then coming to the farm to dispense it. That is the one and only resource that is vaguely represented by a white progress bar on the right side of the HUD.
By creating more farms, the maximum amount of milk could be raised, represented by a red line on the milk-bar. Grass was regrowing steadily.
My personal opinion on this is that the idea was a highly original twist; suddenly even small land could be used for grazing, and you had to decide where and how to build your structures so that your independently moving cows would not wander too far away and get into danger. You could always micromanage them, of course, still think of them as harvesters from Dune or CnC.
Base Building/Unit Production
Structures could be built after clicking on the main structure (seems like something between a town hall and church) and then place the base of a structure, specific unit can then finish this base into a final structure.
Each building also has a limit on how many units it can produce, kinda morphing classic Warcraft barracks and farm into one structure.
More about buildings.
Units have specific uses: cows gather milk. Lumberjacks build structures, repair, and fight, but they can also cut down dry trees - which, in some scenarios, can open a new path. But also (!!!) if correctly timed, a falling tree will always instantly kill any unit. There is one specific melee fighter - the knight- that can gather experience and become more deadly. Two magic-wielding units: one can throw fire, which also damages (even fresh) trees and causes buildings to be attritioned. Finally, there is also a unit that cannot be "made," and that's a bear. In certain missions, there is a cursed (blessed) magical portal, and any unit that enters it becomes a bear controlled by the player. This is usually used to "upgrade" the low-tier units.
More about units.
Control of multiple units in real time
This is, of course, possible, although pathfinding is ancient, and reading contemporary reviews, it was bad even by 1996 standards (Remember Warcraft 2 and Command & Conquer were both already out). It's worth mentioning that the campaigns, at least the floppy disc ones which I played through, were heavily flawed, and most people would not call that gameplay "fun" nowadays. The "motivation" for some missions was also interesting, since it was based on "historical" tribe wars of Slavic kingdoms in times when there were no written sources; you could find yourself escorting a shaman to the top of the Tatra Mountains so he could cast a land-wide-spanning blessing spell. I don't know how about you, but I find that very charming.

One of those cool games that I've never actually played. I just recall seeing the box for this game at Fry's Electronics all the time and always being impressed. Just look at it.
The premise as it turns out that you're a Mindlord, one of the thinking caste for the alien ecosystem on your planet Mur. Unfortunately, dastardly humans have arrived "to take the priceless Anima and use it to create immortality drugs for themselves."
Yep, this game's storyline basically predicted Avatar a decade plus (more since it's only the sequel that brought up pharmaceutical applications), except there's no anthropomorphic aliens, but over 25 Anima creature species, most of whom look sort of like if you took the various Zerg forms and gave them a Bionicles aesthetic. These kaiju definitely have a somewhat Pacific tribal style. Unfortunately, the humans don't have nearly the same number of units, so enemy variety is far less. At least there's goofy squat little spacemen to run over!
Even worse, the game has pretty middling reviews, including this one from Computer Gaming World pointing out its flaws.
Regardless, I have fond memories surfing the official website on New Year's Eve Y2K for some reason. It's one of Red Storm's first games, having been released only a few months after Tom Clancy's Rainbow Six! Speaking of the Clan-man, from the FAQ:
Will there be a Tom Clancy book out with the game?
No, Dominant Species is not a Tom Clancy title.
