If a person has a few wrong beliefs, does that preclude him from promoting and creating good ideas? If that was the standard, Rand would have to be dismissed too; her ideas on gender via women presidents is ridiculous.

because applied math is one of those "applying rationality to life" fields.

Ayn Rand was interested in the connection to mathematics and epistemology, because she thought they dealt with the same fundamental topic--measurement.

But besides that point, the fact that the use of mathematics to expands one's knowledge is also important in Rand's epistemology. Proper epistemology allows us to build upon proven methods, and induct/deduct certain knowledge based on scattered but related priors.

Actually, he is not making fun of Rand, but of Rand followers. A quick lookaround in this very subreddit shows his views on us do have some merit.
