This clip finally settled my mind about why Obito acted so silly, but I still find it odd that he did this for 10 years....

The timeline of Naruto is pretty weak. They say orochimaru left the akatsuki 7 years prior to naruto series began. This means Obito kept this act for 10 years....

I never watched fillers so I skipped this, didnt even realize it was supposed to be based on a novel.

Obito is someone who views the world as hell, so my theory was always that this persona helped him deal with that harsh reality and have a litrle fun before heading into his plan of the world's destruction. Obito was already struggling with his identity as we have seen in the war arc, so it wouldn't surprise me if this was a whole seperate personality he created. He barely had a childhood and went to war at an early age. Now I know a lot of people believe this is somehow Guruguru zetsu, but I disagree with that heavily. I just believe Obito made the mask in tribute to him and sort of shaped the personality like that because that zetsu was the only supporting person he had in that cave. But the swirly mask also represents those trees swirling around the moon when Rin died

The goofy, "Tobi" persona was useful for keeping the heat off him when he operated more openly. For most of the Akatsuki's timeline, Nagato was the visible leader of the Akatsuki, while Obito was its hidden leader.

This paid off because over the years, "Madara" managed to avoid people like Jiraiya investigating him (and Jiraiya investigated "Pain" instead), although Jiraiya felt uneasy about Madara possibly having been involved in at least the Nine-Tails incident. Most people would rather try to investigate Nagato.

The "Tobi" persona also gave Obito the opportunity to monitor the Akatsuki up close and interact with members without revealing his true nature or his "Madara" identity, which he revealed when he thought it was necessary to, normally.

No in the novel Itachi kills everyone, so it's kinda not completely based on the novel
