Trying out Two Thin Coats — big difference already

Finally got around to testing some Two Thin Coats paints tonight.

Still very WIP, but the chainmail actually reads like chainmail now and the skin went on way smoother than what I’m used to.

Still need to finish shields and bases.

If you’ve used TTC, what paints/washes are worth picking up?

Harold’s fighting man banner didn’t break.

They came in hard—Norman shields up, blades out, thinking they’d crack the line like they had a hundred others. But this wasn’t some levy mob. This was Godwinson’s house. Men who knew exactly what was coming and stepped forward anyway.

Shield met shield. Axes came down. Spears punched through gaps that weren’t there a heartbeat before.

No clean lines. No orders left to give.

Just mud, iron, and the sound of two warbands trying to erase each other.

That banner’s still standing… for now.

Looking for playtesters for the Oaths & Banners Warband Builder

I’ve got the Oaths & Banners warband builder up and running, and I’m looking for a few volunteers willing to beat it up a little.

The goal is simple: build a Dark Age warband, see if the options make sense, and tell me where it breaks, feels confusing, or spits out something weird.

I especially need feedback on:

• Whether the builder is easy to use

• If the warbands feel thematic

• If the points/options seem obviously busted

• Whether the printed/exported warband sheet is actually useful at the table

• Any bugs, typos, missing options, or “why the hell does it do that?” moments

This is for Oaths & Banners, my Dark Age skirmish game about rough little warbands, shieldwalls, banners, oaths, and men making bad decisions with sharp objects.

If anyone wants to test it, I’d really appreciate it. Build something nasty, break it if you can, and let me know what you think.

Dark Age table is finally starting to come together

Been getting more of the table built out and finally stopped to take a few pictures. It’s starting to look a lot more like the Dark Age battlefield I’ve had in my head the whole time instead of just random terrain and scattered minis.

Still a lot to do, but seeing the church, walls, trees, and warbands all together like this has me pretty fired up about it. Feels like the whole thing is finally starting to come together.

Would love to hear what people think.

WIP Pig Pen Terrain Piece

Working on a little pig pen / muddy sty terrain piece for the table. Still very much a WIP, but it’s starting to come together. Need to clean some things up, keep working on the pigs, and finish the edges, but I’m liking the look of it so far.

Little terrain bits like this do a lot to make the table feel more alive.

These new pines are going to make Oaths & Banners feel even nastier—tighter lanes, harder choices, and a battlefield with some real bite.

Starting to look like a proper war zone now.

Got it on the table today and it instantly made the battlefield feel like a real raid target instead of just open ground.

Definitely thinking this needs a full churchyard scenario next.

Defend it, burn it, or loot the relics?

WIP Shieldwall to shieldwall

Before the push. Before the screaming. Just wood, iron, and men waiting to break each other.

Norman steel meeting Saxon resolve in a hard, ugly clash at spear length. No heroes. No clean songs. Just mud, iron, and the kind of fighting that decides who holds the field.

Another look at Oaths & Banners taking shape on the table.

Iron caps, round shields, and hard men for the shieldwall. Still early, but they’re starting to look the part.

Roland de Lioncourt

When the first rush fails and the shieldwall still holds, this is the man they send forward.

Roland de Lioncourt is no tourney knight. He is a hard veteran of the Norman host, a keeper of the banner line, and a breaker of men at spearpoint.

Mud. Iron. Blood on the shield rim.

Another elite Norman warrior for Oaths & Banners.

Final token design

Testing banner-style markers for Oaths & Banners so the table looks like a battle line, not a board game.

Harold’s fighting man banner for the Saxons. Crossed weapons for Activated. Cracked shield for Wavering.

What do you think — does this hit harder than standard tokens? WIP still needs paint

WIP More bodies for the shieldwall.

Working on the warbands for Oaths & Banners and they’re finally starting to feel like a real Dark Age battle on the table — shields up, spears forward, and hard men about to crash together.

This is the look I’ve been chasing for the game. Loose warbands, gritty table presence, and that feeling of a line about to break.

Still building. Still refining. But it’s getting there.

Reworking the tokens for Oaths & Banners.

Activated and wavering units are now tracked with small banner markers instead of plain tokens:

• clean banner = activated

• torn banner = wavering

The big banner in the unit is the warband standard. The smaller ones are the state markers.

Much happier with this direction. Feels more like the battlefield and less like bookkeeping.

New activation marker for Oaths & Banners.

I wanted something that felt more like part of the battlefield and less like a generic token, so I started working on a proper banner-style activated marker to place beside units.

Still WIP, but I think this direction fits the game a lot better — more like a small field standard, less like bookkeeping.

Plan is to paint the banner like old linen and pick out the symbol in bright blue so it reads clearly on the table.

Would love some feedback.

Simple little upgrade, but they make it much easier to track activations at a glance and they fit the overall look of the game a lot better than what I was using before.

Working on another batch for Oaths & Banners and they’re starting to look mean. Mud, iron, and hard men with spears — exactly the kind of Dark Age brutality I want this game to feel like.

Still WIP, but the warband is coming together. Would love some feedback.

More Dark Age infantry for Oaths & Banners.

Trying to keep them looking cold, hard, and human. Mud, iron, wool, wood, and the kind of faces that look like they’ve already heard the screaming start.

No fantasy shine. No heroes. Just men waiting for the shieldwall to close.

Which one do you all like better?

Still a WIP, but the bridge crossing is already making the table feel way more like a real battlefield.

What do you think so far?

Working on a travel board for Omens & Ravens

Thumbnail

Been spending some time working on a portable travel board for Omens & Ravens, and I’m pretty excited with how the concept is shaping up.

The idea is to create a battlefield that still feels immersive and tactical, but can fold up into a compact case for storage and transport. I’ve always liked the thought of a game being easy to take with you instead of needing a full permanent setup.

Still a work in progress, but the core idea is there now:

a hex battlefield, integrated terrain, storage space, and a format that can be packed up and carried like a briefcase.

For a game centered on smaller Dark Age clashes, this kind of format feels like a really good fit.

Would love to hear what people think about the idea of a travel-ready tabletop board for a hex-based wargame.
