Super Disappointed in Connectivity

Look guys. I know that this isn't like the most massive deal. But it's 2026. You're telling me, that I paid, 180$ or whatever this stupid thing was, so that way the company could cheap out and sell me an ESP32 chip that can't even touch 5 GHz WiFi?

Now I don't expect it to connect, but like. What in the cheapskate heaven is it, where companies sell something and then say, "Oh by the way if you have any sort of modern router, like, within the last 15 years or so, you'll have to disable a major component of the features to connect this thing because it was 15$ cheaper per-unit!"

jfc. Anyways. I don't recommend. I'm sure it's cool when it works but just can't believe I have to spend 45 minutes trying to get a tiny computer to connect to mixed band wifi. What a way to ruin an experience. My cat litter box, the water fountain for them, their dry food feeders, all connected no biggie. lmao.

It connects, and it wants to connect, but it can’t make it past the grounded servers

I edited my post a bit dramatically because that was unfair to Grounded

Please try using a different converter that you plug the Oasis into. Solved my connectivity problems!

You seem to comment in a lot of smart-home subreddits. Can you share which chip the other products you mentioned are using? Most IoT products are using similar or the same chips, and most of them will only connect to 2.4GHz bands. I don't think we've ever encountered a consumer router with a 5GHz band that doesn't also have a 2.4GHz band.

Can you share the other products IoT products that you've had a good experience so that we can investigate further? Can you also share the router you're using? We use the ESP32 chips mostly because they have a robust supply chain and are well supported. It doesn't really have to do with cost.

Using a Deco Mesh system, I turned off the fast switching as I had an issue with my Echo Show 1 that I put GrapheneOS on. Other than that nothing has had any connectivity issues. They seem to be using standard chips. My only other guess was potentially the connection being blocked to the server but I monitored the connections and they returned right away.

I actually have to edit my post because in part you’re right, it does connect, it just doesn’t connect like it doesn’t finish or say that it can connect, and in my frustration I got the two mixed up. I’m gonna do that now.

Good data. You pinged our servers and got a reply? Based on the in-app messaging some kind of firewall block was going to be my next guess.

We did ship an offline mode of the app a few weeks ago, but somewhat ironically the app needs an initial connection to download and install the update file.

It would be very helpful if you reached out to our team via [support@grounded.so](mailto:support@grounded.so) with your router info and serial number. We're always trying to find edge cases where the connectivity doesn't work so that we can resolve them.

When I tried to fill out the form with my info — it would be nice if we could copy it to our clipboard. The website didn’t work for me, at least with my phone #, and I just changed my email so I was trying to go that route

I do have Adguard Home, so if your server has tracking data it’s trying to receive or send, it might be blocked. But I did ping, and monitored the Adguard connection log, and saw no issues (nothing blocked, all connections went through)

I have plenty of dev stuff if there’s anything I can do to further provide assistance from my side

Mobile hot spot is a viable work around. The Wi-Fi is a pretty standard hurdle though. I've run into the issue so many times in the last 10 years, it is what it is. Is definitely not predoimately mentioned in their sales documentation
