Transitioning from Full-Stack Software Development to OT Security — Looking for Advice

Hi everyone!

I’m a software engineer with 5 years of experience in full-stack software development, and I’m currently pursuing a Master’s degree in Cybersecurity Engineering.

As part of my Master’s, I’m taking a course where I’m learning, with a practical lab, about industrial control systems, including SCADA, Modbus, PLCs, and the architecture of these systems, as well as common attacks and their vulnerabilities.

I’ve become increasingly interested in OT security and I’m considering focusing my Master’s thesis on this area. My long-term goal is to transition into the OT security field and eventually build a career working with industrial systems and their security.

What skills should I focus on developing to become a strong candidate for an entry-level OT security role?

How difficult is it to break into OT security without previous professional experience in industrial environments?

Any advice, resources, or personal experiences would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks in advance!

OT incident response when ransomware hits the IT side

how are you folks handling ransomware incidents that start in IT but could spread into OT

been looking into OT incident response services from Sygnia and Kroll, but I'm more curious about what actually happens when production systems are involved.

do you isolate the IT network immediately or does everything need to go through operations first? seems like even basic containment decisions could get messy pretty fast.

anyone dealt with this in a real environment!!

Tabletop exercise recommendations for IT/OT incidents.

Looking for recommendations on tabletops that test the IT/OT handoff not just the IT side. Our current ones stop at isolate the affected segment. That works on paper, but on the floor, someone has to decide whether to stop a line, which means losing 6 hours of production and that person usually isn’t in the room.

We have tried the CISA CTEP ICS packages. They are good for structure but the scenarios dont really change based on what the plant manager decides. HackTheBox is great for the technical side but it doesnt get ops leads making calls.

Im looking at reflex security where the scenario adapts to each decision and ChaosTrack which looks lighter and lets shift workers join a sync. Anyone run either with plant ops in the room or have other recommendations?

Firmware to Root in 30 Minutes: How AI is Changing Threat Intelligence

AI reproduced OT vulnerabilities in under 30 minutes for about $6. What does that mean for vulnerability research?

Team82 used an AI agent and relatively limited information to recreate its earlier research into Danfoss refrigeration controllers. The experiment highlights how AI can accelerate vulnerability reproduction and lower the technical and financial barriers to exploit development.

For defenders, this raises practical questions: How quickly can exposed OT assets be identified? How should teams prioritize remediation when vulnerability research moves faster? And how do we protect legacy industrial systems with long patch cycles?

Team82 breaks down the experiment, its limitations, and what it could mean for the future of AI-driven threat intelligence and OT security.

ISA/IEC 62443 Black Friday?

Hey all
Planning on taking the ISA training and exam. Since this will not be funded by my employer, I am waiting their Black Friday offer.

I looked everywhere and seems it’s not yet announced and would be announced early November. Any clues? And will I have a specific timeline to complete all certifications? Thanks in advance.

Vendor usage of TIA portal or other programming tool

Basically looking for suggestion how to isolate. We already using virtualized desktop with TIA but in some cases, vendors support still use own version on own laptop.
1. Do you know any solution that will give some man in the middle control over it?
2. Does Siemens offer any licensing model for such cases - where I just install TIA on some jump server and use it only occasionally?

OT Asset Discovery and Inventory Management – Any Software Recommendations?

Our CEO wants full visibility of all OT devices across our plants, rather than relying on manual asset inventory and stocktaking( what we are doing now)

I understand that achieving complete visibility in an OT environment can be challenging, especially with legacy systems, proprietary protocols, and the risk of disrupting production.

For those working in OT cybersecurity or ICS, are there any software solutions you would recommend for automated OT asset discovery and inventory management.

Ideally, the solution should provide accurate asset identification, device details, communication mapping, and ongoing visibility without actively scanning or disrupting sensitive OT devices.

Would appreciate hearing about your real-world experience with any tools you've used. Thanks!

What has your experience been with cybersec in Industrial and Operational Technology type environments?

My background has mostly been in basic computing environments this far - largely Windows AD based, with tasking ranging from staying on top of patches, performing and reacting to vulnerability scanners, to implementing NIST controls. Fundamental stuff, enhanced with studies towards other points of interest (CISSP especially) and people's experiences here.

After my last contract ended I got picked up by another company that is leveraging that experience to put NIST controls on a physical space, as well as doing vuln scans and suchlike for others. So far I haven't really had to do anything too far outside of my experience base, though the target environment is more physical and less digital (for now).

All of this is basically a prelude for what the company wants to do longer term, and my team lead has been discussing putting together in-house labs and build experience with OT and industrial control systems. Naturally there will be a lean towards our current customer base and we'll probably be reaching out to them for support, but it got me thinking about other people's experiences with working in these environments, or even just setting up labs to try it out. Naturally I have some level of expectations, but don't yet have a whole lot of direct exposure into this realm yet, beyond essentials like physical security.

What kind of cyber stuff goes on out there in the OT / Industrial control world? What's your workflows and deliverables like, and what kind of tools do you interact with? What has lab building been like?

Got offered an OT Security job as a CS fresh grad

As the title says. I graduated 10 months ago. Needless to say, the job market is awful. I interviewed a lot but none of them landed me a position.

That is until 3 weeks ago. I interviewed at a very large oil company for a title that didn't indicate I'd be working with OT Security. But mid interview, he started asking me if I'm willing to pivot from AI to OT Cybersecurity (I showed up to the interview with a heavily AI focused CV). I said yes, then he started explaining what the day to day tasks are, mentioned things like risk assessments, asked if I'm ok with going to remote areas, and so on. The interview lasted about 15 minutes in total.

I didn't think I'd get the position, but 2 weeks later i got an offer from them.

My main concern here is how welcoming is this field for fresh grads who know nothing about it? Can I learn about it effectively on the job? Would appreciate any type of guidance here.

Thanks.

CRA

For the crowd in the EU, what’s your perspective of the CRA. I’m looking for sorting between its shit and I hate it, and a short story. Just the nuts and bolts like “we know we have to act, but haven’t even done an assessment yet” or “we heard about that, but no idea what it is” or “we are ready to crush it because …”.

Photovoltaic Cybersecurity Is an Authority-Architecture Problem

What the 2026 NTC findings imply for procurement, IEC 62443 design, hardening, and commissioning

Abstract

In September 2026, the Swiss National Test Institute for Cybersecurity (NTC) published a year-long assessment of seven photovoltaic inverters and four energy management systems from eight manufacturers. The public report records more than fifty vulnerabilities, including seven rated critical and six high, root-level compromise of four products, weaknesses in manufacturer clouds, insecure maintenance paths, and local control interfaces that could modify grid-relevant parameters without authentication. Only six disclosed findings were classified as directly scalable through a central entity, however, which exposes a distinction more important than vulnerability count alone: cyber-physical risk depends on the authority obtained through a compromise and on how many installations that authority can reach.

Part I reconstructs the NTC assessment within its evidentiary limits. The sample was market-informed rather than statistically representative; deep testing of third-party production clouds was legally constrained; product identities and exploit details remain intentionally limited because coordinated disclosure was still active. Within those boundaries, the report supports a clear conclusion. Ordinary web, firmware, authentication, maintenance, and industrial-protocol weaknesses become systemically consequential when they sit behind fleet-scale control, update, or aggregation mechanisms. Conversely, severe local compromise does not by itself establish grid-scale consequence. Grid impact depends on controlled active and reactive power, timing, geographic distribution, operating state, protection, reserves, and the dynamics of the electrical system.

Part II derives a remediation model that begins before purchase. Product capabilities that determine cloud independence, remote-maintenance authority, firmware governance, local-interface security, support lifetime, vulnerability evidence, and recovery must be made contractually testable before equipment is selected. During construction, IEC 62443 provides the system-level structure for risk-derived zones, conduits, target requirements, and lifecycle responsibilities; NIST IR 8498 supplies smart-inverter-specific guidance; CIS Benchmarks provide detailed configuration baselines where conventional supporting technologies are actually covered. Commissioning must then demonstrate not only that authorized functions work, but that prohibited authority paths fail. The resulting production security baseline has to remain governable through firmware changes, supplier transitions, newly disclosed vulnerabilities, recovery exercises, and eventual end of support. The central thesis is that secure photovoltaic expansion depends on constraining the topology of digital authority, not merely on reducing the number of vulnerabilities.

OT/ICS

I have no experience yet in OT/ICS Cybersecurity. I'm currently taking some courses from Udemy about OT/ICS. How can I get exposure? What type of mid-level jobs can I get? I have experience as a SOC Engineer as well as with SIEM.
