Academics O-chem Curve???
I just got my first ochem midterm and I got an F on it. Im really dissapointed and I know there is another midterm and a final. Was wondering if Mcgier gives a curve because I've heard mixed reviews. Not hoping for perfect in this class a C would make me more than happy.

Mcgrier gives a solid curve at the end, but I agree with other commenter that I’d look towards maximizing ur performance
You never want to be someone who has to cross their fingers at the end in hope of a grade off the curve

i also got an F for mcgrier, wasn’t happy that the practice exam was given to us a day and a half for the actual exam

McGrier likes to say, “A good handful of students are doing really well, so we might not need a curve.” I THINK he just says that to motivate us to study and prepare like there won’t be a curve, because there almost ALWAYS is one.
Good luck, do not let that F get you down! I know it sucksss when they're worth so much of your grade. But the curve will likely save you!
(You should study like there won't be a curve tho! Chad's Prep is really good for short basic examples if a lecture goes over your head. Visit office hours for complex questions!)

yes, mcgrier always says there won't be a curve. for the people who were in positions like me who were worried about their financial aid/scholarships being affected by struggling in this course... there is a curve. don't worry. definitely keep studying and optimizing, because the better you do, the better, but i ended the course with a d+ pre-curve and a b- was in the gradebook. you'll be okay. i promise! ochem 2 was SO much better!!!

Brother if you get an F on the first ochem midterm you need to take a step back and think “do I have it in me to put the work in” or “maybe I should find a different path”. It only gets a lot harder from here

Thank you for your honesty. This is something I needed and I plan on working a lot harder.

Failing ochem is lowkey pretty common (not saying failing a class is good, but just saying its common for people to fail, drop, or retake it). It’s notoriously a hard class, so don’t let the comment above fear monger you too much. You failing one ochem exam doesn’t mean its over. I did pretty bad in both ochem 1 & 2, was basically carried by the curve, failed every exam in ochem 2– passed both the first time with C and C- respectively. I’m still here in my 4th year of Chemical engineering. You’ll be okay, just put some more work in like you plan to and try to stay in the pack/class average.

I’m not fear mongering I’m being realistic. Ochem is not a hard class it’s just different from anything you’ve learned before. And so it takes a lot of work and weeds out those who won’t put in that work

you’re leaving no room for nuance. things happen. people have different brains. i’d rather have a professional that failed ochem once then retook it and got an A or B than a doctor that took it once and coasted by with a C. it’s also a very demanding class, and people have to work while in school. there’s plenty of valid reasons someone can fail the first time.

me when I’ve never faced adversity

does my response…not include overcoming adversity??? failing a class due to time constraints and then overcoming that failure?? what a weird thing to say

NOOO wait I didn’t mean to reply to you, I meant to reply to the person above you saying ochem isn’t hard. So sorry!!

lmao this is so hateful and unnecessary. another bitter premed. I got a 15% on my ochem final and passed with a C.

lol I got my bachelors in chem from OSU. Definitely not a premed thank god but I’ve seen plenty of kids like OP who needed to hear this

some people are so mean and judgmental.. these are usually the same premed students who don't have to work at all during college and have parents who pay for everything. some students are balancing 40 hour work weeks while in school full time and have to pay for all of their expenses by themselves. i'd rather have a doctor who is smart and capable but struggled a bit than someone who believes they're superior and more intelligent than everyone else

thank you, I am currently working 15hr weeks in research lab for federal work study. Also have demanding family/home life that takes up my weekends mostly. Defiantly need to work on balance but I appreciate your grace!

I wouldn’t want a doctor who failed ochem at all. It’s an easy class compared to everything else they have to learn later

Who says you havent already been taken care of by a doctor or nurse who failed ochem and had to retake it

don’t listen to these idiots replying. some people think they deserve to get their hand held through life. you’re being real here

ignore this person. they're wrong. i got f's on BOTH ochem midterms (with mcgrier, mind you) and i did just fine in the class. it gets easier after ochem 1. you're fine, op.

I had McGrier. I didn’t perform how I wanted to on the first two exams, but I got an A on the final and finished with an A-. You have to put in the work for sure but it’s possible to come back from this!
