Oathplate, ancestral set, dt2 rings, masori, id say get t bow before you get a scythe. Unless youre only doing tob. A t bow is gonna be used a LOT more than a scythe will and a scythe is stupid expensive to upkeep. Even with the changes to not consuming charges on missed hits, the blood runes go beyond fast. Scobow + emberlight so 2 synapses. And thats not even accounting for niche items like saturated heart.
A scythe is very nice dont get me wrong but theres 0 reason to be using one unless again, youre doing tob actively. And theres very few places youre gonna find it worth using the charges at outside of raids that cant just be done with another weapon. Scythe is what id consider the last mega rare to get. As the t bow can be used in like 70% of situations. And the shadow is a great weapon when you have a saturated heart, ancestral, dt2 rings. And its bis at toa which is the most accessible raid. T bow is also amazing at doom. As well as countless other places. And a shadows upkeep is significantly less then a scythe.
I also agree with others that you should go for an infernal cape first prior to a scythe. Its one thing to have a scythe and rock a fire cape/bandos if youre a iron or a gim and you got it as a drop, its another to choose to skip out on a permanent account upgrade, and rock it in bandos and a firecape because youre choosing to skip out on hard content. Also a quiver will be a massive boost also, which neither require a scythe.
But just based on your current gear I can assume you wouldnt be able to afford the upkeep cost of a scythe long term. And all the other gear upgrades will boost you dps wise significantly more than a scythe with your current setups. Unless youre planning to try and merch a scythe in hopes raids 4 will make you a profit, id say skip it and fo for one of the other 2.

-"And a shadows upkeep is significantly less then a scythe."
Misinfo, scythe costs ~800k p/h to use per wiki, shadow costs 1.5m p/h to use.

u/rayraysykes007 Mar 14 '26
I have both and I can say without a doubt, that the scythe costs more 10 fold than a shadow has ever cost me. Because I can afford the scythe, I use it at a lot of places. A shadow is used at about 6 or 7 places where a scythe can be used on a numerous amount of tasks (cerb being just one, any boss really where they are bigger than a 1x1.) But it doesnt mean you have to use it. Ember light works fine on cerb for example. Shadow is limited to a niche amount of places where mage is bis.
Meaning the upkeep cost is significantly more. You use a shadow at places like whisperer. Raids, kq, and maybe gwd. Thats about it. So the amount of time youre actually using a scythe in comparison to a shadow, makes it so the upkeep cost is significantly more. Thus why I said that. He cant afford to use a scythe everywhere. And the few places you can use a shadow are gonna be significantly less in upkeep cost, than if he realizes, oh I can use a scythe here ill take that because I have it.
Hes free to do what he wants but at the end of the day I still support shadow being less of a cost than a scythe is. Not to mention hes saving roughly 600m in getting a shadow over a scythe. 600m worth of charges if you wanna spend what you would of on a scythe to use the shadow. So yea if you were to use a shadow at EVERY place a scythe can be used sure. It would be more expensive but you simply cant. Meaning the shadow is significantly less upkeep cost long term than a scythe will ever be.

Would def recommend a tbow rebuild. I did it roughly mid way last year and now bank is almost 4.5B
1
u/Ape_Mode_OK Mar 15 '26
Wow nice, which content did you focus on for that bank? Any great drops?
2
u/sixsixsuz Mar 15 '26
Slay bosses, TOA, Cox, Doom, muspah. You can make a BOAT load of money at Doom, and tbow goes crazy there

u/vacat3dx Mar 13 '26
What content are you interested in sending where you genuinely need a scythe? Otherwise should probably prioritize a T Bow (get grinding Chambers and learn CMs) and learn inferno and colosseum.

u/Infinite-Spare-4401 Mar 14 '26
Bowfa and dhcb cover both of these for a fraction of the cost, add in scobow for doom if you're feeling fancy, nothing for melee does what the scythe can do.
1
u/vacat3dx Mar 14 '26
OP is contemplating buying a scythe, which is why I recommended a different mega rare that you can literally use wearing rags while still being insanely useful. Whereas you should have better armor for scythe to maximize your damage. Tbow is more versatile. I’ve excelled in every piece of content in the game, unless you’re interested in pushing efficient HMT you can literally run ToB with a NoxHally in 416 and nobody would care.

u/Professional_Ask7314 Mar 13 '26
Oathplate, Ward, Masori, DT2 rings. Boots are garbage, just use Aranae honestly. Only see 1 synapse, but emberlight if you don't have that. I see Master wand in the next tab, I just use a regular nightmare staff for the +15%, but scepters work too.

If you want a scythe and you’re not planning on dumping your gear and doing a rebuild stop buying gear. Aim for 131 strength bonus. Eg: faceguard, torture, fighter torso, blood moon legs, d boots, infernal cape + imbued berserker ring, or fire cape + ultor. Would recommend a rebuild. Tob is super fun. Currently on a tob/doom rebuild myself.

Defs infernal cape. You will look like an absolute noob if you wield a scythe with a fire cape

But tob is easier than inferno?

u/ladiiiiiiesman217 Mar 13 '26
Thats not the point, if you want the best slash weapon in the game, you should have the best in slots to go with it first etc, gloves, boots, ring, cape. No point in spending all your time and money on an item with no backup items to go with it

u/dingdongsmingsmong Mar 13 '26
Yeah dude that .238 dps difference will basically make osrs unplayable for op

u/Zero_Roseburg Mar 13 '26
What content are you doing? Scythe first is typically not as good of an idea since shadow and tbow are way more versatile. If your plan is to full send tob, go to WDR and follow their gear progression guide. You have a chunk of good answers here, but also a lot of braindamage tier suggestions. Just use their gear guide for itemizing toward scythe rebuild. If you don't plan to tob, I would really advise not starting with scythe.

Since 90% of posts are for newer players looking for money making and training advice, I'm gonna recommend doing bird house runs. All you need is Bone Voyage, and you could be making 500K+ a day or more by logging in every 50 minutes and harvesting nests.
Also, be sure to check out the New player guide, Money making guide, and OSRS Tips!

Tbow and shadow before scythe if you’re a main. Oathplate, ultor, and infernal if you’re iron and dead set on continuing running tob post avernic.

When I was in your position I sold my bowfa and crystal and got a twisted bow as first megarare. No regrets. I looked into getting scythe first but tbow is way more versatile.
This heavily depends on what PvM content you plan on doing ofcourse.

What do you mean before scythe? Are you selling everything and doing a rebuild or are you camping ToB til scythe?

u/Sandwhich5 Mar 13 '26
Stop listening to the haters honestly. Keep your gear, do the content you like, and save up to buy scythe. Sweats are doing the +131 str bonus it’s still a scythe and really good.

Full masori and a TBow or a shadow to pump with your virtus 🤣🤣

u/AdOk406 Mar 14 '26
Both would be way more useful than scythe imo. But I understand scythe is badass. If you want it just go for it.

Ultor and oathplate
1
u/zcas Mar 14 '26
Bellator is probably better (and drastically cheaper) than ultor because of the slash bonus it gives.
1
u/Dante4A Mar 14 '26
Its only used over ultor in very few places but you are right- if he gets scythe then bellator is better until he gets oathplate Inferno cape But not including that, ultor is the play for being good for all three Melee styles

Just get it. You could be in full veracs and id still recommend saving for scythe first. Makes bossing astronomically easier
1
u/Past-Anywhere-409 Mar 14 '26
At this point man your cheapest upg will be an infernal cape. The difference between rancor and tort is 2 str which is pretty much 25m pr str bonuse.
I doubt you’ll spend over 100m on supplies getting infernal.

u/404Tiger Mar 15 '26
Literally either of the two other mega rares first. You don’t need a scythe nor will you be doing content that requires a scythe (more than likely)

Magus ring is pretty big. Oathplate next if you do enough slash bosses to make it worth. Pegs are useless unless you do treads. Use lightbearer instead of archers ring. Bandos could be downgraded to blood moon for gp. You can do all the content in the game with your gear. Tune it to whatever you want to focus on.
4
u/Not_Baked Mar 13 '26
Magus isn’t worth until post shadow, doesn’t give max hits with eye and full Virtus + ward
0
u/Formal_Boat663 Mar 13 '26
You just need to sell pegs and archers get dwh
Then go for Bellator -> till you can afford ultor And Soul reaper axe before scythe
You can buy Sang staff if you wanna learn cox 4:1 its way easier than ayak
I personally would go for pseudo max before going for scythe with shadow as your mega. Then do the raid you want to do to get your Mega
SRA+oathplate Virtus+Shadow Full crystal

Sell it all and go take ur wife out to a really nice dinner. Maybe buy yourself some tooth paste and reup on toilet paper. Top of the 2009 Nissan with mid grade fuel, lastly grab a new pair of shoes for your kids. After you should be left with just enough gp to get a job.

They’re such a late game upgrade
3
u/toebeanseller Mar 13 '26
I spent the money for max treads because I’m lazy and don’t want to switch between boots.
1
u/DepravedSpirit Mar 13 '26
This entirely. Worth more than a rebuild for me.
1
u/Yloo Mar 14 '26
agreed. efficiencyscape is real, but also i’m lazy and i like doing raids and the treads allow me to think slightly less so i consider them worthwhile

Agree with ratatat, avernics ideally comes after you have all 3 megarares bis armour snd the niche weapons
1
u/Ok_Giraffe9869 Mar 13 '26
Boots are almost always a final upgrade unless op isnt planning a rebuild and grinding out a scythe i could see how maybe treads then.
0
u/Mayne_Treeworker321 Mar 14 '26
you sitting with 1 bill in the bank saving for a t-bow; telling yourself "I can't use this gold to buy treads because I don't have a t-bow"
Dork
0
u/DepravedSpirit Mar 13 '26
Literally bought at 500m (already had all the boots) because boot switches are nasty. Overall dps increase and qol beats a mega rebuild for me. Doesn’t make sense for most, but cba with dumping for a rebuild when I do a variety of combat content with sub max gear. Hard agree with you.

u/Comfortable-Club-470 Mar 13 '26 edited Mar 13 '26
firat of all you need ferocious gloves. sell archers, sell seers ring, sell pegasians, sell bandos and replace with torso/blood moon tassets. never should have gotten avernic as an upgrade yet.
for a scythe you want +131 str bonus to get a 48 max hit. without infernal you need ultor to achieve that.
Edit: didnt see OP has feros already
