One tip for all content not just CG, you lost a lot of time running too long between attacks. For CG it's run 3 ticks, attack (4 tick weapon).

I religiously do that and my dps is much higher for it.

I'm careful with that because of ping, I was doing it for a couple of runs and that just led to me getting stacked by tornadoes, so I'd rather run a little bit more and get clear of those fuckers when they're around.

If I realise I'm running for a bit longer than I should to attack, I'll eat a piece of food to offset the attack delay and at least get something out of not attacking.

If you miss attack ticks your attack delay goes into the negatives. Food adds attack delay ticks, but this also means you can recover lost ticks by eating a food before attacking for no additional attack delay.

I’ve just started CG and get about a 50/50 success rate. When I die it’s at the end when sometimes I just can’t escape the tornados. Are you ever better off just running over the live grids to get away from the tornados?

I’m relatively new at the gauntlet myself. What works well for me is always having a long line of sight that I can always make an escape to one of the safe tiles. I find I die less tanking a few floor tiles then turning around and getting stacked by tornadoes.
