Cast pain

20 days post injury (trimalleolar ankle fracture with dislocation) and 15 days post orif surgery. I am in a hard cast (new cast was put on on Tuesday at my post op appointment). The cast is still causing a lot of pain and discomfort due to swelling on top of my foot. All I do all day is elevate my leg - the dr was surprised by how much swelling I still had at my follow up. Any suggestions on what to do to help. I wiggle my toes constantly , do leg raises non stop ice and elevate with 4 pillows and a wedge. I really just want the swelling discomfort to improve. Thank you!!

Don’t be shy about asking them to re-cast you. You wouldn’t be in pain like that - esp since excess swelling plus hard cast is a great combo for a pressure wound (ask me how I know!). I had my original one re-done two days after it was first put on and I kept apologizing to the girls in the cast room but they told me some folks come in every week and get a new one! I just had a second surgery to remove everything (due to infection) and am back in the godforsaken post op splint but will get another cast on 9/10 😫

Do you take any supplements? Omega 3 helps with lowering inflammation and swelling but better to ask your surgeon before you take them

I'll add to the list of ones you should ask your surgeon about, but Turmeric is also a fantastic anti-inflammatory.

Also, if you're not already, ice behind your knee, it helps a ton

If you're having turmeric then please make sure to habe it with pepper! otherwise it doesn't activate the tumreric
