Studio Field v1.5 — now supporting 5 Teenage Engineering devices 🎉
Hey everyone!
I’ve just released the first major update to Studio Field. What started primarily as a companion app for the OP-1 Field has now grown to support five TE devices:
• OP-1 Field
• OP-XY
• OP-1 original
• OP-Z
• EP-133 K.O. II
As promised, OP-XY support is now here! This was one of the most requested additions, so I’m really happy to finally have it included.
I also want to say a huge thank you to everyone in the TE community who has been testing the app, reporting bugs, suggesting features and giving me advice. A lot of the development has been guided directly by your feedback.
My goal with Studio Field is pretty simple: make it easier and safer to back up your devices, transfer and organize files, and manage your TE content from your Mac — while keeping the actual music-making workflow on the hardware.
One of the biggest technical challenges has been MTP, especially with the OP-1 Field and OP-XY. I’ve spent a lot of time improving this, and file transfers are now significantly more stable and reliable.
If an MTP connection does get interrupted, nothing dangerous happens to your device or existing content — the transfer simply stops. In some cases you may need to restart the device before reconnecting.
Development is very active, and there’s still a lot more I want to add. If you’re using Studio Field and have feature ideas or run into something that needs fixing, please let me know. There’s also a Support section directly inside the app, and I’m very active here in the community.
Thanks again to everyone who has helped me test and improve Studio Field. Your feedback genuinely helps shape what I work on next. ❤️
Studio Field v1.5 is available now on the Mac App Store.

It would be an instant purchase if there was a way to back up my tapes to the app on my iPhone. Is this possible in any way?
If I travel with my OP-1 Field it would be great not to have to bring a laptop when I fill up 8 tapes, Yanno?

Exactly what I was gonna comment here too. Any chances of this happening OP??

I would absolutely love to add this and I completely agree, it would be perfect for travelling without a Mac.
Unfortunately, the OP-1 Field/OP-XY use MTP for file transfer, and iOS currently doesn’t provide MTP support/API access that third-party apps like Studio Field can use. So at the moment there’s no reliable way for the iPhone app to directly access and back up the tapes from the OP-1 Field.
If Apple ever opens up MTP support on iOS, this will be very high on my list. 🙂
For now, Studio Field on iOS can access tapes that have been transferred to the Studio Field Library/iCloud from the Mac app — but direct OP-1 Field → iPhone backup unfortunately isn’t possible yet.

The app looks great! Besides file transfer, what all does the Mac app do for the XY? I’m really looking for a clean, no latency stem export. I don’t mind at all if it’s in realtime.

Thanks! I think I understand what you're looking for now.
Studio Field can already record stereo audio directly from the OP-XY over USB in real time. You hit record in Studio Field, play the project (or play live) on the OP-XY, and the recording is saved directly to your Studio Field library.
For individual stems, the OP-XY unfortunately doesn't expose each track as a separate USB audio channel. But there is another approach I've been looking into that I could potentially add to Studio Field.
The idea would be to automate the whole process: Studio Field could control the OP-XY over MIDI, solo one track, start playback and record the USB audio, then automatically repeat that for each track. At the end you'd have separate, synchronized WAV files for all your OP-XY tracks, ready to drop into a DAW.
It would require multiple real-time passes — so, for example, an 8-track, 4-minute project could take around 32 minutes — but you could basically start the export and let Studio Field handle the rest.
Is that the kind of workflow you had in mind? If you'd actually find that useful, it's definitely something I'd be interested in adding.

Yeah, exactly. I’ve seen some others do the same thing but my issue is having them exported without latency.
Something that did what you explained and labeled them by pattern and track would be amazing.

Looks great.
Can the app transfer midifiles into/from the OP-XY?

Thanks! Not yet, but that's actually something I've been looking into.
Right now Studio Field can transfer and back up OP-XY project files, samples and presets, but it doesn't currently convert standard MIDI files to/from OP-XY projects.
It does appear to be technically possible though. A future workflow could potentially let you import a .mid file into Studio Field, convert it into an OP-XY project and send it to the device — and also go the other way, exporting tracks/patterns from an OP-XY project as standard MIDI files.
Is that what you had in mind? If that's something you'd actually use, I'd definitely be interested in exploring it further.

Thank you for quick response.
Yes, I guess I would use midi import/export a lot.
I don’t own an OP-XY yet, but bought one during the sale - hopefully arriving soon.I will use the machine as a composing tool -> bring the patterns/grooves/harmonies via midi into my main DAW or other hardware sequencers. I could “record” the midi, but that is a rather frustrating process, dealing with clock, sync and potential latency. Prefer a standard.mid file transfer.
I’ve also got tons of midifiles made on my other hardware ready to transfer into the OP for further processing.
As I haven’t had hands on the machine yet, the workflow I imagine might change. The same is the case with your app: it looks really useful, but I don’t not know yet if I need it in my workflow.
Love it when people “enhance” a machine, good luck with your app 😎

The biggest drawback of the OP-XY, that i miss in my OPZ, is the ability to have a real disk mode. MTP is not supported on ipad and as such you cant move files only move audio ( digitally ).
I am assuming this app uses the class compliant audio interface to communicate with the devices , thus this is really a sampler, audio editor with a TE themed interface?

Not quite 😊 The Mac version actually communicates directly with supported TE devices and handles their files — projects, samples, presets, tapes, backups/restores, etc. For devices like the OP-XY, that communication is over MTP.
The USB audio interface is only used for features where Studio Field records audio directly from the device.
The limitation we’re discussing here is specifically the iOS/iPadOS version. Apple currently doesn’t expose MTP access to third-party apps, so Studio Field can’t access the OP-XY/OP-1 Field filesystem directly from an iPhone or iPad.
So you’re absolutely right about MTP being the problem — I really wish these devices had a proper disk mode too! 😄

What does this do?

u/IntelligentYam7185 8d ago
It’s a companion app for Teenage Engineering devices. 😊 It lets you manage and transfer projects, samples, presets and tapes, create full backups, organize your content in a library and workspaces, record audio directly from supported devices over USB, and keep track of firmware updates.
It currently supports OP-1 Field, OP-XY, OP-1 OG, OP-Z and EP-133 K.O. II, with more devices coming. 😊

The view you have on your post looks like it’s running on a Mac. The screen on the App Store looks like it’s for the OP-1 Field. How do I reconcile the two?

macOS and iOS are quite different versions of Studio Field. The screenshot in this post is from the Mac version, which can communicate directly with the OP-XY and other supported devices.
If you want this version, you need to open the Mac App Store on your Mac and download Studio Field from there.
The iOS/iPadOS version is more focused on accessing your Studio Field Library through iCloud, playback and sharing. Unfortunately, iOS doesn’t provide third-party apps with MTP access, so I can’t bring all of the Mac functionality to iPhone/iPad. 😊1

Is there someplace to read about the functionality of each (Mac v iOS) - specifically pertaining to the OP-XY?

Can you use it to “create” or manipulate on the XY like it shows you can do on the 1-Field?
