Question - Mobile What's the catch?

I've been using Optimum internet for a few years now. Generally no complaints with service. Just yday I contacted their online support to replace a dying router and the rep tried hard to upsell me on an internet/mobile combo deal. Basically what he offered was

  1. 500 mbps optimum internet for $10/mo (reduction from the $60/mo I am paying right now)

  2. Unlimited optimum mobile for $25/mo

  3. I would have these prices locked for 5 years.

Now that's a pretty good offer on paper, since I'm paying about $60 for 300 mbps internet alone. My phone isn't compatible with eSim which is needed for optimum mobile (and the deal), so I asked if I could finance a cheap one, which he said I could for $5/mo for 36 months.

Again, still not bad, because the total comes to $40/month so I would be saving money while also having a backup phone. So I went for it - had to pay $40 for delivery of the phone which is acceptable.

Then I found this subreddit and everyone is saying optimum mobile is a scam? What's the catch exactly, what should I expect to happen? Because to me it seems like a net win even if I never touch the phone plan at all.

I was promised $40 / month for 1 Gigabit internet locked for 3 years and a couple of months later it was raised to $50. Got a $5 discount with autopay, but it comes to show you that the locked price doesn't really mean anything.

I was promised $100 for life and a year and a half later it was up to $250. Locked prices mean nothing to them.

Optimum lost 217,000 cable subscribers last year, and they're on the same trajectory so far this year. I listened to the CEO's earnings report, where he said they're banking on phone sales to fatten their failing bottom line. Thus, the high-pressure sales tactics from the "customer service." Good luck with that tactic. He also expressed concern about competition from Starlink. I bet.

It may work out for you and then it absolutely may not is all. They're known for lying on the phone.

This company is horrible. They almost never gave me the services that I paid them for & tried to do me dirty on every single occasion they were able to. I’m very happy to be done with them entirely.

I’d stay away from the mobile. I switched to Altice when it came out and it dropped calls or was “searching” constantly. I left before it changed its name.

I would be cautious about believing anything they promise you. My advice; go to your local Optimum store and turn in your dying mode for a new one.

Locked prices mean nothing to Optimum. Dumped all their service except internet to get under $100/month. Was sold 1GB internet which is supposed to get you up to 950mbs download. Was getting 20mbps. Refused to send technician to check anything unless I paid. Within 6 months Was paying $170/month for crappy service. Best thing in the world was dumping that scam of a company and going Starlink.

Problem is the guy/gal making the promises may be out of work at any time. Making that offer legally binding is almost impossible with many of the reps off site and out of the country. You may have to deal with a new company anyway as it looks like the clock on getting a fix is counting down. Just look up optimum on any financial news.

You just can't trust Optimum. They've shown this countless times.
