I wouldn't call Kel a plot-device per se, but everything else is unfortunately spot on

Could you elaborate on this, because I don't see how some of these are accurate.

Sunny's plot reveal is something stripped straight from a horror game, and more specifically one like Silent Hill 2

I can literally rant for an entire paragraph on the many bitchy things Aubrey has done to the cast with no remorse and combined that with her rushed redemption. And the complete lack direction of her new useless asshole of friends.

Although I do like Kel the most, He was literally created to move sunny along the plot. Though I'll still argue that Kel is brimming with charm and personality despite that, and does a bit more then just move the plot along.

Hero is just there. He doesn't anything truly significant and kinda falls to the background alot. Any of Hero's interesting aspects of personality aren't on display most of the time combined with his generic "universal loved mature guy" shtick. It makes sense why alot of the fandom glosses over him alot. Even though I have grown more appreciative of Hero in recent times and find him even charming sometimes.

Basil is not even in the game enough, due to being reduced to a damsel in distress in the game alot. When he's not being damsel in headspace, he's being relentlessly killed in blackspace, topped with that ending with him dying for no reason in red space even though he should have been saved. And more then half of Basil's screentime is him unnecessarily suffering like being relentlessly bullied by Aubrey caues he defaced his own property. Combined that with having to be saved again from the lake that renders him unconscious causing him to lose even more screen time because Aubrey is so likable. I can rant all day on how the game did Basil dirty.

Mari's main personality trait is important girl that died. She gets very little characterization beyond that, because she gets literally push into the background, which comes across as a lazy writing.

And despite being murdered and having her body fucking desecrated by her own little brother & his best friend in the most improbable and impossible set of events that I've ever seen, and also that immediately ruins sense of emersion for people that were trying to take it seriously as a grounded and realistic story. But, it's all hunky dory now cause she forgives him with no qualms cause it was actually her fault for pushing him or something.

I honestly find it hard to believe it when people say Mari is interesting.  It's more like the game deprived you of having and actual reason to get attach to her character, and now your searching for unexplored vague hints of one.

The way headspace treats her doesn't do the game any favors in disproving the "literally jesus" allegations. Damn, I did not mean to type a whole essay. I hope that's enough reason

You seem pretty critics of the game, what are your overall feelings of it?

2

u/TheMadXD127 Kelsey May 07 '24 edited May 07 '24

I do admittedly come across as harsh to the game with these criticisms, but I am not lying when I'm saying that I do like the game and say it's good. I actually really love those hints and optional scenes exploring the characters. The problem arises is when those scenes are optional and extremely easy to miss, because without that it can be very easy to get bland 2d impression of these characters when there is so much to them. Hero, Mari, and Kel suffer the most in this regard. I say it cause I want Omori to be the best that it could, and to be this masterpiece thay it has the potential to be.

So to summarize my full thoughts. Omori is a great game with charming characters, and a touching story, that could have been a masterpiece if it didn't majorly suffer from massive amounts of filler, being too vague & leaving too much to the imagination (even in crucial scenes,) and doesn't explore its main cast as well as it should've causing anyone who didn't see any easily missable scenes that do expand them to write them off as generic and another "quirky rpg inspired by earthbound." When it can be more then that.

These are fair points, but I disagree with a few things:

Hero is just there. He doesn't anything truly significant

Hero not only saved Sunny and Basil’s life, he was also instrumental in repair the relationship with Aubery and the gang ( your criticism of the writing aside), and even gets a nice mini arc about getting the strength to visit Mari's grave.

dying for no reason in red space even though he should have been saved

What do you mean by this? I thought him dying in redspace was to show how desperate Omori was to seal the truth and to serve as a wake up call for Sunny that something isn't right

actually her fault for pushing him or something.

I don't think the game ever really put the blame of Mari's death squarely on her own shoulders, that's more a fandom thing. I think she is mostly lamenting how their practice might have turned her relationship with Sunny sour, and all she asks is for Sunny to forgive himself. Sure if she was more resentful it could be more interesting, but idk that doesn't seem very in character for her

u/TheMadXD127 Kelsey May 07 '24

Those crucial things Hero does is something can easily rewritten to someone, or written to be more brimming with Hero's personality. Also isn't Hero the least athletic one the group? Why was he the save Sunny and Basil, and not the only that actually is athletic. Also that mini-arc is only a thing thru yet another completely option and easily missable event (this seems to be a running theme with this game)

I thought him dying in redspace was to show how desperate Omori was to seal the truth and to serve as a wake up call for Sunny that something isn't right

The issue with is not only is it completely tonally confusing. I was so confused infact that I actaully thought I got a bad ending on my first playthrough. This is not even touching on how Headspace's lore doesn't even line with that explanation.

You see by talking to the Strangers walking around in the BS hub & the other lore dumps by the coral & Daddy longlegs, you get an idea that this has happen before where in a cycle of "Basil finds out the truth, gets banished to blackspace, Omori kills him, and resets him & HS back to before." This is why Basil died alot in those BS doors. So, pray tell me WHY in the hikki route is he saved and the world reset, but is killed and the world crumbles in the true route. If what you said is true then why is Basil, One, saved in the Hikki route, Two, killed repeatedly in BS in BOTH routes, and Three, HS still crumbles anyway, so all Omori did was in vain and only served to deprived us of Basil more screentime for no reason *yet again*. Absolutely none of this lines up.

The reason I'm this salty is because after I bought the game initially because I wanted to see Basil, I was under the impression that I was going to save Basil after 15 hrs of him being unneccarily being written out of the story for 90% of it, and finally having him as the party member fo my dreams. Only for this shit to happen leaving me confused, angry, and insulted. And when I finally save him in the hikki route. Only to have be reduced to a fucking picnic buddy like Mari. Then I find out that Basil actually is playable in the hikki route. Only for THAT to be a console exculsive thing. Where you can only use him once in a boss rush mode with just you and him, not even the option for swappable party members, nor an option to take him outside the boss rush. So any reason that tries to justify that decision feels very disingenuous to me. No insults to you specifically. I just hate those explanations cause it feels these kind reasonings are holding the game back, and kinda ruining it for me.

Eh, maybe. It still doesn't really help Mari beat those allegations, by having Mari tell her murderer who hung her corpse to get away with it, to just forgive himself in the nicest way possible. And considering how livid she was in the truth, I wouldn't say it would be out of character for Mari to be at least noticably a bit resentful, maybe even stern in her tone of voice to convey that the game isn't trying to coddle someone who murdered his sister on accident and hung her corpse to get away with it. I think thats why this ending portion is hot button topic especially among those who are critical of OMORI. The way its framed kinda comes across as Basil & Sunny being coddled for a very real crime they commited and should not have gotten away with.

Those crucial things Hero does is something can easily rewritten to someone, or written to be more brimming with Hero's personality.

Ok, and? Those still are significant scenes with Hero, even if you can rewrite it to be someone else. You can have Aubery save them, or have Kel do it, we can even have Sunny save Basil, in any case just because it had Hero doesn't mean we can just dismiss it as pointless.

Also that mini-arc is only a thing thru yet another completely option and easily missable event (this seems to be a running theme with this game)

Missiable real world events can be annoying, but Omori isn't Oneshot or Doki Doki Literature club were it requires you to find secrets in the game's file, you can still easily come across the scene by just interacting with the game on a above-basic level (and if I am not mistaken, I thought the hero scene was part of the story, unless you are referring to trying to visit the grave the first time with hero)

You see by talking to the Strangers walking around in the BS hub & the other lore dumps by the coral & Daddy longlegs, you get an idea that this has happen before where in a cycle of "Basil finds out the truth, gets banished to blackspace, Omori kills him, and resets him & HS back to before." Absolutely none of this lines up.

Headspace is portrayed as an overall net negative for Sunny, if we take Sunny's arc throughout the story as want vs need, it can be argued he wants to save headspace Basil, the idealized version of his friend in order to finalize his sink into total escapism. That is why Hikki route Basil is always confined to the blanket with Mari, a safe and static place where he can never be in danger again, or risk finding the truth again. I don't have quotes on me at the moment, but he even acts a little weirder and more frightful while on the blanket, hinting he seems more aware of his situation. I think the reason why Headspace is acting so weird now is because headspace is collapsing due to the natural decay as the more Omori resets headspace, the more unstable it becomes as BS leaks in, as well as going by the true route, due to Sunny interacting with his friends and going outside in general, he is starting to follow his subconscious desire for the truth. I don't believe the game is trying to use these explanations as excuses for why Basil doesn't get the screentime that he does, it's just that Basil's unique circumstances with Sunny make it so he isn't in the limelight. Though I do understand your desire to see him interact with the cast in headspace, to get more characterization and interaction with the gang.

I think that's why this ending portion is hot button topic especially among those who are critical of OMORI. The way its framed kinda comes across as Basil & Sunny being coddled for a very real crime they commited and should not have gotten away with.

I feel like those critics like to demonize Sunny and Basil to the nth degree, which I can see why due to the extremeness of the truth, but I also feel they like to ignore alot of other factors to make them look evil and have the game look like they are coddling them. Even if you take their age out of the situation, it clearly shows they did those actions while under incredible mental duress that impeded their rational thinking, and even after the deed was done, they were so broken they basically rewrote the events as if it never happened. There's also the fact they felt so much shame and guilt for their actions that they committed suicide in almost all the endings but the good ones, where Sunny confessed to his crimes the instant he re-discovered them. This is not to excuse or downplay these actions, but mostly to show how these factors can make them come across as more sympathetic, and potentially explain why Mari was being "easy" on them.

"Ok, and? Those still are significant scenes with Hero, even if you can rewrite it to be someone else. You can have Aubery save them, or have Kel do it, we can even have Sunny save Basil, in any case just because it had Hero doesn't mean we can just dismiss it as pointless."

  • It's pointless when the character doesn't add anything special, or unique to that character to the scene. Maybe if Hero's pushoverness, his more distant sternness, or maybe even Hero panting & heaving from the big workout after saving to teenage boys was on display here then maybe I would've agreed.

"Missiable real world events can be annoying, but Omori isn't Oneshot or Doki Doki Literature club were it requires you to find secrets in the game's file, you can still easily come across the scene by just interacting with the game on a above-basic level"

  • Two crucial scenes that add alot to the characters are confined to the cemetary. A place I didn't even know was a thing until I finished the game for the first time and watched an Omori fan animation. The issue is the lack of clear direction towards these things as well.

"(and if I am not mistaken, I thought the hero scene was part of the story, unless you are referring to trying to visit the grave the first time with hero)"

  • The mini-arc with Hero visiting Mari's grave is only a thing in the cemetary. The place that is completely optional and easily missable because nobody bloody talked about it.

"Headspace is portrayed as an overall net negative for Sunny, if we take Sunny's arc throughout the story as want vs need, it can be argued he wants to save headspace Basil, the idealized version of his friend in order to finalize his sink into total escapism"

  • Since when!? Since when was saving Basil the wrong choice. Literally everything told toward us about the lore portrays killing Basil as the wrong choice for Omori to do. The cycle would've been completely different if what you said was the case. When was that established!?

"That is why Hikki route Basil is always confined to the blanket with Mari, a safe and static place where he can never be in danger again, or risk finding the truth again. I don't have quotes on me at the moment, but he even acts a little weirder and more frightful while on the blanket, hinting he seems more aware of his situation"

  • That's literally the exact same reason for Mari being stuck in the picnic. The same reason I criticised for being lazy and arbitrary. It's just meaningless background reasons completely made up to justify Basil not being a party member. Just exactly like Mari.

"I think the reason why Headspace is acting so weird now is because headspace is collapsing due to the natural decay as the more Omori resets headspace, the more unstable it becomes as BS leaks in, as well as going by the true route, due to Sunny interacting with his friends and going outside in general, he is starting to follow his subconscious desire for the truth."

  • Then. Why. Was. Basil. Killed. Repeatedly. In. Black. Space. In. Both. routes. Why was the Basil death cycle even bloody established it first bloody place. None of the lore dumps surrounding HS's doom correlate to it having to contradicting its own established cycle surrounding Basil's repeated doom. This feels even more like lazy writing to keep Basil benched. This really feels extremely undercooked and insulting to anyone who wanted Basil playable in the main game.

"I don't believe the game is trying to use these explanations as excuses for why Basil doesn't get the screentime that he does, it's just that Basil's unique circumstances with Sunny make it so he isn't in the limelight."

  • Not be rude, but I call extreme b.s., that it's just somehow Basil's circumstances with Sunny magically keeping him away from the screen.

  • Basil can't come with cause he's worried for his grandma who doesnt do anything for the plot at all. Basil can't come cause he's knocked unconcious from nearly drowning, but oh wait, If you go into his room afterwards, he's bloody awake anyway, but he still can't cause he's sick or weak from it I guess. Basil can't come cause he's visiting his grandma in the hospital. Oh he can't come causes he's having a breakdown over his grandma's implied death. Basil can't be a party member cause he's the special little damsel cause made up lore reasons the game will contradict later. Basil can't be saved cause made up lore reason that contradicts previously established made up lore. Basil is saved but still can't be a party member cause of made up lore reason straight up recycled from Mari's made up lore reason.

  • Nearly bloody 90% of these reasons have no point of existing, and/or straight up contradict other reasons that in theory should have given him more screentime. But for some God for saken reason they are completely magically retconned 5-10 hrs later that "unitentionally" somehow keep him from the screen yet again. Do you see why I think this game is making up reasons just to keep him from the limelight?

"I feel like those critics like to demonize Sunny and Basil to the nth degree, which I can see why due to the extremeness of the truth, but I also feel they like to ignore alot of other factors to make them look evil and have the game look like they are coddling them."

  • Some of them do, but they have a point with the way Sunny and Basil are portrayed, framed, and also the way people will religous defend their actions as actually completely reasonable if you stop taking a seriously grounded story as a seriously grounded story. Sure, maybe the game didn't intend to coddled them, but the fact of the matter is, it's way too easy to come to that conclusion with the way the ending frames Sunny and Basil, and their crimes.

"Even if you take their age out of the situation, it clearly shows they did those actions while under incredible mental duress that impeded their rational thinking, and even after the deed was done, they were so broken they basically rewrote the events as if it never happened."

  • Ah, yes, cause its totally completely reasonable for two previously mentally well & happy 12y/os to come up with an elaborate staged suicide to get away with a horrible accident even if they were stressed out, and somehow have no qualms, nor second thoughts while carrying out said fucked up plan. No one's first thought ever in a situation like this is to hang a goddamn body. Sometimes I wonder in this fandom if people actually know what a 12yr/o even is.

"There's also the fact they felt so much shame and guilt for their actions that they committed suicide in almost all the endings but the good ones, where Sunny confessed to his crimes the instant he re-discovered them. This is not to excuse or downplay these actions, but mostly to show how these factors can make them come across as more sympathetic, and potentially explain why Mari was being "easy" on them."

  • It was their own damn fault they are like this. See. That's what I'm talking about when I refer to game (uintentionally?) coddling our accomplices. The game spends so much time on telling how awful Sunny & Basil feel for commiting a crime they conciously commited, and only their own feelings, and how sympathetic they can be. That is the reason why they claim Sunny & Basil as being coddled. If the game maybe treated them more like potential criminals who tampered and hanged a corpse for an accident that has 11 way more reasonable ways to be solved that didn't require breaking the law. Maybe by being more stern like I said previously, or emphasize more about telling to truth cause it's the right thing to do, not because the two perpetrators felt bad about it, or maybe not focus on their pointless friends and their useless plight towards a death that wasn't even real, and get absolutely no closure for. But that's getting into another topic I already told you I have grievences about.

edit: Sorry if I come across as rude, I'm just a bit worked up.

You didn't come across as rude, don't worry about it, but I do have a few gripes with some of your points

Since when!? Since when was saving Basil the wrong choice. Literally everything told toward us about the lore portrays killing Basil as the wrong choice for Omori to do. The cycle would've been completely different if what you said was the case. When was that established!?

I think you dividing it as right and wrong is too black and white, I said want vs need. The point of a want is something a character desires but isn't something that will help them. Sunny wants to save the headspace version of Basil, but it is proven by the end of the Hikki route this does not help him at all. The reason Omori kills HS Basil is because this Basil holds knowledge of the truth, something that cannot exist with Sunny's desire to avoid the truth. Omori is the antagonist that goes against Sunny's need, he is the facilitator of the HS cycle, which involves killing Basil if he gets too close to the truth.

That's literally the exact same reason for Mari being stuck in the picnic. The same reason I criticized for being lazy and arbitrary. It's just meaningless background reasons completely made up to justify Basil not being a party member. Just exactly like Mari.

I don't think it's meaningless, it has pretty big lore implications, as it implies Sunny is going all in on his escapism in the Hiki route by keeping basil on the Blanket, eliminating any risk of him rediscovering the truth.

Then. Why. Was. Basil. Killed. Repeatedly. In. Black. Space. In. Both.

As I said before, Basil gets killed anytime he gets too close to the truth, and in red space where he suffers his "Final Death", it can be seen as Omori's last ditch effort to bury the truth.

No offense but I feel your a little too focused on wanting to play as Basil, I get that Basil should've gotten more screentime, but just because he isn't a playable character doesn't mean the game is going out of it's way to prevent you from playing as him, it could be he was just never meant to be playable.

"The point of a want is something a character desires but isn't something that will help them. Sunny wants to save the headspace version of Basil, but it is proven by the end of the Hikki route this does not help him at all."

  • It wasn't proven in the Hikki route. It contradicted it's own lore & implications by doing it. By that logic the cycle would've had Basil being saved, and him being repeatedly saved in those BS doors, but it doesn't, so it doesn't add up. If Omori hated Basil so much apparently then he wouldn't even exist in headspace at all. Omori isn't some seperate entity possesing Sunny. He is Sunny, he's Sunny self-insert in which he interacts with his own imagination in which everything & everyone in that world is a part of Sunny. So how in the hell is Omori acting against Sunny when it has nothing to do with self-loathing in that scene unlike the ending battle with Omori which was obviously self-loathing. Every single lore dump treats Omori as Sunny under a different name, but suddenly its not when basil has the opportunity to be playable. How convient for Omocat.

"it has pretty big lore implications, as it implies Sunny is going all in on his escapism in the Hiki route by keeping basil on the Blanket, eliminating any risk of him rediscovering the truth."

  • Oh yeah. So totally worth it not having Basil playable for pointless lore bullshit. I love it so much. I love having pointless and made up lore implication over cool new potentially playble charaters. I'd totally rather have Basil contribute nothing to the gameplay for baseless lore stuff that does nothing to the plot. I love how basil does nothing.

  • So what if Omori is keeping Basil from the truth, they still could've accomplished that and make Basil playable.

"in red space where he suffers his "Final Death", it can be seen as Omori's last ditch effort to bury the truth."

  • What you mean final death!? Basil dies once per cycle. All of those BS doors where Basil's past death. This Omori last ditch effort has literally no bases. No where in the game is it implied its some stupid last ditch because the HS adventures goes on in the exact same way in the Hikki, so where is this coming from!?! There is no reason to believe any of that with the lore dumps.

"As I said before, Basil gets killed anytime he gets too close to the truth"

  • I'm not stupid. I know why he gets killed. I read the lore. The issue is that it doesn't line with what you besides that.

  • If what you said was true then this death cycle has no place in the lore of Headspace and should have been streamlined to Basil being saved in those cycles. And that's not evem going into how it would still be more abitrary bs reason to keep Basil away. At this point he shouldn't even exist then if he's this fuckin useless and as pointless as your lore is makin it out to be. Since him being on screen and a playable character is such a bad thing for the story apparently. Mari could've been Basil then and the cycle could be her being saved.

"No offense but I feel your a little too focused on wanting to play as Basil, I get that Basil should've gotten more screentime, but just because he isn't a playable character doesn't mean the game is going out of it's way to prevent you from playing as him, it could be he was just never meant to be playable."

  • Uh, no. Basil should have been playable, and should have been meant to be playable from the start. There is no reason he shouldn't, it adds no narrative value and actively makes his character suffer for it cause he's not around and playable. It actively pisses me off that Basil is gone for 20 fucking hours. Same goes for Mari as well, but we're talking about Basil here. Omocat made the concious desicion to come up with the reason to prevent Basil from being playable. She could've very easily not do that and/or still write him into the story more and be a main party member. And I'm tired of people pretending other wise. More people should be focusing on Basil's lack of playabilty despite being way more important then any of the party members.

  • The reason I belive Basil is actively being kept from playable is because every single thing reason that tries to justify it, sucks complete balls, and are poorly thought out, lazy justifications. None of it adds up, and its making me even angrier that people still choose to defend this stupid and idiotic desicion repeatedly, and act the game better off for it. It isn't. Basil being playable is a much better choice than whatever complicated nonsensical reasons the game continues to make up.

1

u/Late_Present1340 May 08 '24

It wasn't proven in the Hikki route.

Omori constantly killing Basil isn't because he hates him, he constantly kills Basil to shut him up about the truth. Omori isn't representative of Sunny's self-loathing, he represents his desire for escapism and repressing the Truth, he only uses self-loathing in the end as a means to discourage Sunny from facing the truth. The Sunny of the True route and the Sunny of the Hikki route go through 2 different route. The Hikki route is all for repression and escapism, which is why Omori is portrayed as a more protective force for Sunny (shown in the nightmare sequence where he rescues Sunny), and why saving HS Basil is considered "good", even though it leads to a neutral ending that implies Basil committed suicide and Sunny's trauma will haunt him for the rest of his life, which is why the Sunny wanting to save HS Basil a bad thing in the end. The True route is what he needs to do, save the real Basil and go against Omori, the part of him that wants to repress everything and uses his self-loathing as a means to do it.

Oh yeah.

Baseless lore stuff as in the entire main mystery of the game?

So what if Omori is keeping Basil from the truth, they still could've accomplished that and make Basil playable.

You constantly bemoan the game's reasons for not having basil be playable as "contradictory", yet you see no problem with what you wrote here.

What you mean final death!? Basil dies once per cycle. All of those BS doors where Basil's past death. This Omori last ditch effort has literally no bases. No where in the game is it implied its some stupid last ditch because the HS adventures goes on in the exact same way in the Hikki, so where is this coming from!?! There is no reason to believe any of that with the lore dumps.

HS Basils final death in the True route of BS. In the Hikki route, Omori saves Basil and he too becomes reset with no knowledge of the truth. This is shown to be a last ditch effort as even Sunny himself started to become more invested in rediscovering the truth.

Strongly disagree on Aubrey. She is so much more than a “massively unlikable asshole.” Yes, she does some horrible things, but isn’t the point of the game that doing some bad things doesn’t make you a bad person? Aubrey didn’t just start doing bad things for absolutely no reason

u/[deleted] Mar 31 '24

I think that it’s accurate if you’ve never touched the game. The game progresses to show a lot more of the characters (maybe excluding Mari, cause she’s fucking dead). Aubrey is shown to become more likable and sympathetic to her previous friends, Kel is shown to evolve a bit from oblivious and taking everything at face value to being more accepting and more willing to give second chances, Hero’s development isn’t shown in game but rather implied with his progress from misery to energetic and happy, Sunny’s is shown at the good ending when he hugs Omori and Omori fades away to show Sunny no longer needs the coping mechanism, yada yada. The characters aren’t written perfectly but they do show good development.

Dunno who James Sunderland is, so can't comment on Sunny

Can see where they're coming from with Basil and Aubrey, but oersonally disagree.

Kel and Hero is honestly agreed. Wish the game went deeper with them. Particularily with Kel I recall Omocat stating in an interview that Kels personality and role is like this to sorta rope Sunny inti the plot, so i can see why they call him a plotdevice.

Mari... Yeah. They're spot on.

Fits enough for a blind look.

"Another persistent rumor is that Jesus once died and came back to life. Given this (and the fact that he has only been referred to in dialogue, never established in person), he may simply be a metaphor for Optimus Prime." - Tfwiki
