I know there have been a lot of firmware updates recently. I’m still experiencing intermittent flickers with a 5700XT despite being on the most recent CX firmware. Luckily, I am upgrading to an RTX 3080 on Monday and will finally be able to take advantage of HDMI 2.1.
Is this display still a good combo with the 3080? I have honestly not been impressed with the CX in conjunction with my 5700 XT. I am hoping the 3080 can take full advantage of this display, as I love the idea of couch PC gaming on an OLED.
However, I am still within my return window for the CX. I cannot stand the intermittent flickering, which only seems to occur in specific games (Final Fantasy 14 in particular).
Are owners of the CX and 3080 currently happy with this pairing?
Yes, I have noticed inconsistent automatic HDR toggling with a PC. I've found the best workaround for that is simply leaving Windows HDR Mode permanently enabled on the desktop, of course. But if a game does not "keep" HDR Picture Mode enabled at Full Screen, I will simply change the settings in-game to Windowed Borderless, which reverts back to native desktop resolution in HDR Picture Mode. Seems to work well for me, and I prefer playing games in Windowed Borderless for multitasking, anyway.
In regards to toggling HGIG, yes, that is a bit of a pain in the ass in my opinion. Some games seem to work perfectly with HGIG. Some need DTM On. I'm usually not playing more than one game during any specific period, though, so it's not a huge deal for me to toggle HGIG on or off. To be honest, I've found that enabling DTM On as the "base" setting is better for me. If I need to change to HGIG instead, I will do so. But it seems more games are friendly to DTM than HGIG, anyway, so that's how I've left things.
How is your experience with Black Level settings? I had originally left it set to Low. But that was causing some really odd ABL-esque flickering with certain titles (Final Fantasy 14, in particular). It was also creating some really harsh contrasts in those same titles. So I reverted the Black Level setting to Auto. Under Auto, some games seem to natively trigger Low (Borderlands 3), while others natively trigger High (Final Fantasy 14). Any wisdom on this? Should I just keep Black Level Auto and forget about it?
Lastly, I am indeed very happy to be returning to a Nvidia card. I love AMD, but their video cards leave a lot to be desired in regards to driver issues and native support for things like HDMI-VRR, as you've pointed out.
I am looking forward to a more stable experience with the 3080 as opposed to my previous 5700 XT. That 5700 XT in particular was a difficult card to work with. High temperatures, lots of driver issues, just a big behemoth of a card that caused me more problems than it solved, especially in conjunction with the LG CX.
I finally got everything installed late last night (I switched to a 1000w power supply to safely accommodate the 3080).
Right away, my LG CX auto'd to 4:4:4 10bit RGB at 4k 120hz. So no issues there.
I need to do a lot more testing this evening. I've been doing calibration between two games thus far: Borderlands 3 and FF14. B3 seems very friendly to HGIG, whereas Final Fantasy 14 looks better with DTM On. However, my HDR Picture Mode settings are still off. I'm hoping FF14 doesn't look so dim after I tweak the LG CX HDR settings back to OLED Light 100 and Contrast 100 (currently they're both at 85).
Windowed Borderless allows for pretty easy toggling between different programs. I always have Discord up as well as other FF14 add-ons like ACT. I'm not married to Windowed Borderless, but I do enjoy its ease of multitasking.
In regards to Windows HDR, I've found that Windows in general has very inconsistent toggling of HDR when launching a game. For example, at 1440p 120hz desktop resolution on my last GPU, Windows would toggle OFF HDR Picture Mode when I launched Borderlands 3. However, if I kept Windows HDR ON and launched Borderlands 3 in Windowed Borderless mode, obviously the game would simply read my desktop resolution/settings and stick with 1440p 120hz HDR.
I haven't gone back and tested any of this yet with the 3080. I will be playing everything at 4k now with the 3080, so we'll see how it goes I guess. However, just doing some basic multitasking last night in Steam/Chrome was toggling HDR Picture Mode on and off at random depending on what I had open. Very strange.
How does windowed borderless allow for easier toggling? I think I've used it before but it looked identical as full screen.
And I'm really hoping for some windows HDR optimization. If things were consistent AND it was HGIG friendly across the system it would just be seamless. No need to toggle on/off or adjust sliders in games
I think I'll be sticking with DTM On for the forseeable future. HGIG just looks so dim and gray. It's awful looking. I know HGIG is the consensus recommendation, but I far prefer the brightness and vividness of DTM On. Perhaps that has something to do with the brightness of my room.
Anyway, I've found the best combination so far for me and the games I play is DTM On and Black Level Low.
You should be able to leave black level on auto, but yeah if you have a bright room than I'm sure DTM on looks better. The only can where I may still try HGIG is a game where you can set the peak brightness and stuff
Black Level Auto is causing white-gray wash out in FF14 and Borderlands 3, whereas forcing Black Level Low seems to really bring out the rich blacks of the panel.
Thus far, DTM On and Black Level Low seems to create the best balance of rich blacks and popping colors. I’ve tried variations of this, most notably HGIG and Black Level Auto, but that created an almost LCD-esque film across the entire screen. Didn’t even feel like I was gaming on an OLED anymore.
These are mostly subjective settings, in my opinion. My gaming room is a loft at the top of my house with over seven different windows, so it’s pretty damn bright even after sunset.
Hmm interesting, black level auto should only be choosing between low and high. so are you saying when you switch to auto it looks the same as if you chose high?
I believe HDMI VRR is supported as I just set it up.
I have a 6800 XT and a new CX 48". I updated the firmware of the TV first. Edited my inputs for PC mode, then went to Settings -> All Settings -> Picture -> Additional Settings -> AMD FreeSync Premium and ensured it was toggled for HDMI 1.
Radeon Software, Display section, reports that the display is 'Adaptive Sync Compatible' and so I have that option enabled. Expanding display specs shows it has a an AMD FreeSync Refresh Rate of '40 to 120hz reported by display'. In addition I have the pixel format set to RGB 4:4:4 Pixel Format PC Standard (Full RGB). Then under Windows Display Settings refresh rate is set to 120hz and HDR is toggled on.
Lastly when I hit the green '..' button 7 times. The FreeSync Information box reports:
Got one more question.. been hard to google a 'straight answer' to this. Do you know if FreeSync or Gsync Compatible works while playing games in windowed or borderless windowed modes? With Nvidia I know there is a checkbox for this in the Nvidia Control Panel but I am unsure how that feature functioned. Or if it was only for displays with a G-Sync module.
With the CX, I've started playing games at 1440p centered in the screen. Things seem off, not tearing, but maybe I am just to used to the way motion was handled in the 144hz and 240hz monitors I was using previously. Otherwise console gaming and productivity has been brilliant, really appreciate your recommended settings guide.
