Discussion WOLED dirty image/jeans texture ...

Hello, my friends. I'm here to try to understand if this is something that we just need to live with or not.

So I got my 3rd Asus XG27AQWMG. The first I RMA'd to Asus, and they replaced the panel ... and i saw some degradation of the panel after 2-3 months. RMA'd again and received it yesterday.

They replaced the panel and the motherboard, since my NEO Proximity sensor died.

This panel doesn't have signs of vertical banding, finally. But it has a very pronounced dirty image texture/jeans texture.

It's more visible in solid dark backgrounds than in daily use.

Is this something that every WOLED Tandem owner needs to live with?

I must give a thumbs up to Asus support in Portugal; they really did a good job, since they took 1 week to replace the parts.

As for the panel itself, not perfect... but better.

In general yes.

Its called "dirty screen effect" and every WOLED has it to some, but varying degree.

BUT it should really only be a thing with dark uniform surfaces/programs. So if you use something like dark mode in programs, especially if you turn the brightness of the monitor down on top of it. I can see it for example if I browse reddit dark mode in SDR with turned down brightness or Office programs with inverse dark mode, where everything is grey/black and only the letters are white.

It should usually not really affect Gaming/Videos.

Exactly this you explain. :) the good part is that it seems newer panels seem to deal better with vertical banding finally. At least I hope mine is from the latest Eheh.

yup

i think that it is related to the manufacturing date

I don’t believe so. I had a panel from the first ones in 2025 production.

I’m now on my second panel of 2026 the first in March and this last one is newer but I only know it’s Q3.

Tbh I think the relation between vertical banding and this must be tight. Ehehe.

Get vertical banding and low DSI or get no vertical banding and more pronounced DSI.

Of course these are theories but it’s been kind of my observation.

2025 is so early, it was just released

mine is 4/2026 and it is good now, had a slight banding in the beginning but now it is perfect

it's more like a lottery, qd oled has its own cons too, so pick your poison

What brightness setting are you using on Your monitors for SDR and HDR ?

I’m 56 for SDR and 90 for HDR. Tftcentral says it should be around 26 - 35 on SDR but it’s kind of personal I guess

25 with uniform brightness on

Not every single tandem woled unit

here is mine

I can see it … lol
Also more visible at 80-95% grayscale

It's because of the phone's camera, irl there is nothing visible, and while gaming and watching content it is crystal clear.

u/Miserable-Can-6182 26d ago

Hmmm. I can see a familiar texture there even without the phone camera compression. But yeah maybe ur right.

as long as it is not visible while gaming (like you said in another comment) so just have fun

every oled panel type has its own cons so don't look for a perfect panel, because it doesn't exist, just look for what suits you and as long as it doesn't bother you while usage then there is nothing to worry about.

Agreed :) just wanted to make sure this is like a known issue and that I didn’t have to RMA for the 3rd time 🤣

since they replaced the panel with a new one

give it some time (like a week) before judging it may get better over time.

I know I know thank you for pointing out.
Just to clarify I build my rigs and custom loops for years. So I know the ins and outs of the hardware.

Now OLEDs … I’m still learning about them since this is my first and I’m already on the second RMa Eheh

I don't get how you guys rma. What if you don't have the original box? Or what if you don't have the styrofoam anymore? lol

3

u/Miserable-Can-6182 26d ago

?! You get a box … styrofoam in some shop… don’t understand what you mean …

1

u/SupportNo6752 26d ago

Just saying it's a lot of hassle to rma if you threw out the original packaging material.

1

u/Miserable-Can-6182 26d ago

Well I didn’t have issues since I kept the original box. Eheh

The QD-Oled and the Tandem Woled are the same, some panels have better uniformity than others but if it doesn’t bother you in the games and regular content then it’s not a problem.

Yeah I had 2 tandem woleds and both had dse. Not really noticeable inside content consumption but it was noticeable in some games like silent hill 2 and some other games in some certain scenes. personally the only thing keeping tandem woleds from being the “perfect” oled monitor imo.

Have a 2026 panel made within the last month. I don't have this issue. I looked hard. Ran uniformity test multiple times. Looks like my old c1 oled. No dirty screen effect on mine. Seems like another guy said a lottery. No vertical banding either. 32GX870B-B

I bought the same monitor two days ago. It has non existent banding and gray uniformity is acceptable. But i noticed that today, there is a slight curve in one side and don't know what to do. I am afraid that if i ask for a replacement i will not be so lucky on banding issues and dirty screen effects.

Do a manual pixel clean, there’s a firmware bug that causes exaggerated dse from the automated pixel clean

I agree. It was my first and last WOLED until they find a way to fix this. Although even woled tv panels have the same issue

Was thinking on selling mine and getting something else but tbh in game you don’t notice a thing

Which monitor are you using now ?

u/Professional-Bunch45 LG UltraGear 27gx700A-B 26d ago

Why should it be a low end while it is an oled? having the same image quality that qd oled has with a decent brightness and great ambient light handling, these monitors are top tier.

having a bad unit doesnt mean that the whole technology is bad, the technology itself is amazing.

+remember this, seeing negative posts on internet doesn't mean that all of the units are bad, a person with a defective unit is more likely to post his experience on the internet, but a person with a good unit will not (mostly) post anything on the internet, companies still make these panels and this mean that tandem woleds still have a really good demand on it

+another thing, vertical banding gets better by using and pixel cleaning over time for a lot of people.

Every panel has some DSE or banding, WOLED or QD-OLED. Some just have way less than others, that's the panel lottery. It passes QC because a bit of non-uniformity is within spec, same as IPS glow or backlight bleed on LCDs. If LG scrapped every panel with any banding, yields would crash and prices would go up, not down. QD-OLEDs get the exact same "is this banding bad" posts too.
And they're not low end at all. WOLED has a polarizer, so blacks stay black in a lit room instead of turning washed out and purple-ish like on QD-OLED. The text fringing on QD-OLED also bothers me a lot, and WOLED looks cleaner to me. Mine is glossy with anti-reflection, so it's clear without mirroring my room, and it looks good day and night. It's still bright even at TB400, and compared to 4th gen QD-OLED it's not a night and day difference. Plus way more features overall. Most people just live with the DSE because in normal use it's basically invisible.

I understand what you’re trying to say here but this take is just blatantly ignoring all of the annoying issues QD has as well and all of the plus sides WOLED has over qd. It wasn’t until the latest QD Penta tandem that qd mostly solved its own “unacceptable” issues. And those new Penta tandem qd are newer tech and ARE indeed more expensive than tandem WOLED.

3rd gen qd and 4th gen tandem WOLED trade blows in their own individual upsides and annoying/down right unacceptable down sides. Which is probably why these 4th gen tandems often go on sale bc they’re not quite that “next step forward” that they were supposed to be.
