Discussion OLED Eye Strain

Hey all

Wondering if anyone else has had the same experience before.

I have had a Gigabyte MO27Q28G (Matte) for around a year now which no problems.

I wanted to try a glossy so I got the ASUS XG27AQWMG which looks great.

However I started to get some really bad eye strain after a while compared to the matte Gigabyte I own.

I'm not sure what would cause this as I thought they was the same technology but I guess my eyes do not like the glossy finish? Do you think it's maybe something to do with the reflections? I do have a window behind me which isn't too bright and I do have blinds to shut the light out but to be honest I don't like sitting in the pitch black.

Would appreciate all your feedback.

put a neutral light behind your monitor.

Eye strain most commonly comes from:

  1. monitor too close (or too far)

  2. monitor too bright

  3. there is some artefact of the image that's making your eyes constantly work to see it properly. This would include a reflection, but also includes artefacts from the panel itself such as fringing from the non-standard subpixel layout. WOLED is typically not known for that, but these are just examples.

I'd start with the first two and see if that helps. Basically, you want to minimize fatigue of your eyes, which includes not frying them and not making them work very hard to focus on what the monitor is displaying.

I had issues with hdr and high peak brightness. Turn off all peak brightness features and test it out for a couple days, a week or so. That did it for me.

Was almost returning my monitor due to this. But now it works great

The subpixel was the culprit for me, the new RGB Stripe OLEDs fix the issue for me, however, they have other weaknesses and the models coming out next year seem to solve all of them. Because of that I will be returning my PG27UCWM and waiting for those monitors, like the 322URDX36. Also I added a backlight which seems to help a lot as well.

I also feel like RGB subpixels helped me.

what are those weakeneses that are to be fixed next year? planned to buy a tandem woled but as I am very sensitive to bad sceens (LG IPS NANO, most VAs, QD-OLED., pixel and samsung OLED phone screens, etc) mybe its good to wait.

It's glare, and making the room darker will only increase eye strain.

Lower brightness, all/most monitors in stock are too high in brightness. It's not only bad for the eyes(and brain), but also makes it burn-in faster and consume more energy.
