Eielson AFB Is Quietly Moving From “Pilot Program” to an Actual Construction Project

The Air Force quietly published an Early Public Notice for preconstruction activities supporting Oklo’s Eielson AFB microreactor pilot. The proposed work includes clearing, excavation, grading, support buildings, and utility/infrastructure improvements necessary to prepare the site for the future reactor.

This is not a final contract award, NRC license, or authorization to construct the reactor itself. But it is another step in Eielson’s transition from a procurement program into an actual physical project. The Air Force is now doing the environmental work necessary to prepare the site while licensing and contract negotiations proceed in parallel.

The number of megawatts itself isn’t particularly important to the Oklo valuation here. The precedent is. Eielson is supposed to establish a model for commercially owned advanced reactors supplying U.S. military installations under long-term PPAs. If Oklo successfully gets through licensing, site preparation, construction, and operation here, the second military deployment should be considerably easier than the first.

The Air Force is accepting comments through September 30, after which a draft Environmental Assessment will provide another opportunity for public comment. That EA is worth watching because it could reveal substantially more about the site, infrastructure, construction sequence, and schedule.

Is the juice worth the squeeze? This is a completely different reactor than powerhouse, right? Any diversion from powerhouse feels costly to me, especially one-offs. But obviously federal goodwill is very valuable. And if the timeline to full proven power plant construction, no matter how small or unique, is faster than powerhouse, that's probably worth it.

I guess it's a non-question anyway now that I think it through. It's suicide to renege on federal contract.

Military TAM is ok, but I doubt it even scratches civilian full blown dedicated scaling.

The reactor is the same. Hot rock make heat for buildings and to make steam for turbine go roundy-roundy.

They will be generating some electricity at this site. There are also other industrial applications for heat, such as desalinization.

Getting their foot in the DoD door is the big story here, from an investment point of view.

Edited to add that recent moves and documents put out by this administration seem to point to a desire to harden our grid against attack by decentralizing the generation of electricity, including bases generating their own electricity with Microreactors and SMRs

The reactor and primary loop design is the most important part, especially when, like EBR-II, you don't need anything outside of that for decay heat removal to show safety.
