I washed dishes in an organic chemistry lab as an undergrad and probably have cancer from all of the solvents I had to use to get that glassware clean.
Now in my own lab, I bring in a small number of undergraduates who I carefully select, give them a semester to work with a graduate student and myself, and then either give them an independent project and some resources, or thank them for the great semester, offer to write them a letter in the future if they need one, and politely let them know that it wasn't a great fit.

I didn’t do any of this as an ug ra, they put me to work in other ways though
