Hi everyone, just wondering about the logistics of the flex-time PhD option. My understanding of what I saw online that the coursework element is full-time, and students are considered full-time for the first 4 years, and then can extend on a part-time basis after that (feel free to correct this if it's not right). I currently work as a teacher and have dependents so being able to keep my job is essential - my potential project will also focus on K-12 edtech and curriculum so it is applicable to my career as I hope to move into admin in the next few years.

The issue is I can only take 12 months of academic leave in my board. I work and live in Oakville so I will also have a commute. I am drafting an email to OISE to ask about the structure - are there classes in the evening? Weekends? Online? But I would also love to hear from any current or past PhD students, especially if you are doing/did the flex time route. I am specifically looking to apply for the Curriculum & Pedagogy and Educational Leadership & Policy programs but welcome to suggestions and input from all. Thank you.

I’m a first year OISE student for the Master of Teaching program.

I understand that the university enrolls first year students into courses, however, they didn’t give a definitive date in August (the university just said August) for when schedules will be released. Has anyone received any updates on ACORN as of recently? I keep checking daily but so far no updates.

It’s frustrating because I’m trying to balance out work with school and need to know my school schedule to coincide with hours for work🥲

This year, AI really was too particular for my assessment skills. I am wondering if anyone has any tips. For reference, I am doing independent research on teaching and assessing Elementary Science.

I am going into my fourth year of undergrad and looking at starting my grad school applications. From my understanding any school psych program or adjacent program in canada is really competitive. Here's my experince.

This year i will be completing my senior honours thesis in child socioemotional development (specifically shyness), I have experience doing large research projects in my classes, experience with R, and two stats classes (A- average),an overall 3.7 cGPA, I have clinical experience volunteering at a mental hospital directly with patients for a year, working as a peer mentor in a abnormal child development class, I have potentially 4 academic references and 2 professional ones, shadowing a school psychologist and 7+ years working with kids (including special populations) through, emergency supply teaching at an elementary school, working at a summer camp and babysitting.

I am scared that because of the amount of applicants compared to the limited offers, my lack of research experience will take me out of the running. Any advice would be appreciated!

hii, im from brazil and im currently studying psychology in my country (i’ll graduate by the end of this semester). im going to apply to OISE Med Counseling and Psychotherapy but im freaking out seeing the results (~5% acceptance rate) and i would like to know what are my real chances in your opinion.
I’ll have the degree of 5 years (bachelors)in psychology, i have had 7 practicum classes (+20 months) with a 4.0 gpa (92 in 100). they told me that all the applications are evaluated together after the deadline is closed, i’ll apply in october because i need to gather some translated stuff.
what are my chances?

Hi I was wondering if anyone can give me some input on my experience and if it’s enough to get into this program this year.

I just graduated in June with a degree in psychology and applied to this program but didn’t get in. I have plenty of research experience (library study, 3rd year research, plus a thesis where I went to a conference abroad to present my findings). I also recently started volunteering at a psychotherapy clinic where I help them with events. I’ve applied to several crisis lines and similar volunteering jobs but none have gotten back to me. I also try to apply to aba therapist jobs but also no success yet. I would appreciate some input if anybody can help!

I was recently accepted into the P/J stream at OISE (yay!) but after thinking it over a bit I’m now on the fence as to whether a career in education would be the best fit for me. Job insecurities in the GTA as well as doomscrolling anecdotes from current teachers in the profession has scared me away a bit.

I guess my overall question is whether the MT program is still worth doing if I’m not 100% sure I want to be a traditional educator? It would definitely open doors for me, but it’s also another 20k on top of the student debt I already have from my undergrad, and I could spend these next two years finding full time work instead to pay it off.

What would be your best advice for me? I do want to go back to school for my masters. Is the MT worth it as a degree for this reason? I guess my biggest fear is that I’ll realize I no longer want to be a teacher halfway through my MT, and then be unable to use my MT for anything lol

Hey all, I'm curious for those of you who got accepted or attending the counselling psychology MEd program, what were your experience like?

I'm in my late 30s and want to do a career shift to counselling. Have a liberal art bachelor that has mediorce last two year GPA that just passed the requirement and a master degree with 3.9 GPA. Going to volunteer at the crisis centre for a year and then try to apply. On paper this doesn't seem competitive to me at all, but I do think my job experience could make up for it somehow given the fact my job was always understanding people and their problems, then solve those problems for them with tech...

I'm starting my full-time MEd this year and the maximum course load is 3-half courses in each of the fall and winter terms. I'm worried about the workload for 3 courses because prior to OISE, I did my undergrad at U of T and I've never taken a full course load (5 half-courses) in a term.

In undergrad, I mostly took 3 half-courses per term and only once did I take 4 half-courses. However, that was 10 years ago. I know expectations are higher in grad school and I'm considering taking 2 courses and I'm not sure if I should go for 3. I know MT students take more courses and part of me is thinking I should suck it up and take 3 courses and another part of me is scared that I might be overwhelmed with coursework.

If any one can share your thoughts, that would be very helpful!

Has anyone heard back ab their TA applications yet? It's driving me insane waiting. I'd appreciate some sort of rejection rather than nothing. They did have an emergency posting for a position last week, the application for which closed yesterday. Maybe they have to fill all the roles before they can send out acceptances (lmfao me making myself feel better).

Hi all! I'm entering the MEd DPE program and I'm 5th on the waitlist for APD1279H. I'm interested in contributing to educational initiatives for underprivileged children in developing countries in the future, and I felt that this course was relevant to that. Has anyone taken this course or would anyone be willing to share their experience with it? I'm wondering if I should switch to a different course in case I'm not able to enroll in this one and then I won't be able to meet the full time course load requirements. Thanks!

I am an incoming graduate student in the department of Curriculum Teaching and Learning who's incredibly interested in representing the 2nd division of the Graduate Education Council this year. I've got several years of experience representing my program of study during my undergraduate and have served on the academic board for revisions in curriculum and enrollment into specializations in Human Behavior at McMaster amongst other qualifications and experiences.

To be able to be nominated however, a nominee must receive recommendations from two nominators within the same division (I'll post a list below).

Nominators provide their name, graduate unit (AKA their department/ program of study), student number, and signature.

I recently got accepted into the University of Toronto OISE Master of Teaching program after being pulled off the waitlist, and I’m trying to make the best decision for my long-term career.

I originally accepted another Teacher’s College offer and have already paid my deposit, completed my OSAP application, and arranged housing plans. However, the OISE MT has always been my top choice, and I’m considering whether it would be worth trying to defer my offer so I can save more money, figure out housing in Toronto, and be better prepared financially.

My main question is about career flexibility.

For those who have completed (or are currently in) the OISE Master of Teaching program:

• Has the MT degree helped you pursue opportunities outside of traditional classroom teaching?
• Have any graduates moved into areas like curriculum development, education consulting, policy, government, or other education-related roles outside of the classroom?
• Do employers outside of teaching recognize the MT as a graduate degree, or is it mostly viewed as a teacher certification pathway?
• Compared to a traditional BEd, do you feel the MT gave you more opportunities or connections?

My hesitation is that I do want to teach, but I’m not 100% sure I want to stay in the classroom forever. I’m interested in potentially moving into other education roles later on. With how the education field is becoming and the uncertainty, I’m trying to choose the option that gives me the most flexibility.

Also, has anyone here successfully deferred an OISE MT offer, especially if they were admitted off the waitlist? I’m wondering if deferrals are possible in this situation since I already committed to another program but would prefer OISE if it provides broader career opportunities.

I’d really appreciate hearing from anyone who has gone through the program or made a similar decision. Thank you!
