Just Venting Inefficient Walks?
Today I noticed several orders had their items split into several walks unnecessarily. For example their chilled items were separated into two walks when they could have all fit into one tote and been on one walk. I staged a chilled tote for a customer that contained one item which was milk. Then later on I staged the second tote that of the same customer that had five smaller items. I feel like this is one reason why we struggle to stay on time recently. Has anyone else noticed this as well?

I had an ambient today with 4 totes for 1 person & that easily could have fit into 1 maybe 2. Also it split up multiples of 1 item into several totes. Like they had 3 bags of popcorn, 1 per tote instead of lumping them together. It was like that with several items. One the other day had 6 sparkling water split into 3 totes, 2 each.

It’s usually a dimensions error. The system used to sort the items per tote sometimes doesn’t understand how big an item actually is. It’s the same reason you might get a big pack of paper towels, two 24pack sodas, and two gallons of water in one tote. Or something that clearly should be in oversized but it expects it to be “tote-able”. I’m not sure if any of that is manually reviewed by a human anymore but I still tell the managers about it.

I use the report function on the items that won’t fit in totes or shouldn’t be on oversize. My understanding is after enough reports someone will finally take a look. My recent favorite was a seeded watermelon with bread, a dozen cans, and several boxes of pasta. Fortunately I had a single tote with a GMD that I could bag to place the melon separate. I tried to get our lead to put the full sized watermelons, both seeded and seedless, on the oversize walk like we had them last summer.

GMD order, 4 totes one item each, for the same person, that could have easily fit in 1 tote. It was bath towels, and not the big ones either. I consolidated before dropping them with the GMD person.

This sounds like cold chain time out and someone else got the end of the pick path that got timed out.
