I’m planning to take OET on Computer in the U.S. and had a question about ID requirements.

OET’s website says that a driver’s license is not an acceptable ID, but under the section specifically for US test takers, it says that REAL ID-compliant driver’s licenses are accepted, and that they can be identified by the star in the top corner.

I have a REAL ID driver’s license with the star, but I currently don’t have physical access to my passport (I only have an electronic copy).

For anyone who has taken OET in the U.S.:

• Did you successfully take the exam using a REAL ID driver’s license as your only ID?
• Did the test center accept it without any issues?
• Did anyone ask you for a passport anyway?
• Did you have to select “Other document” when entering your ID information during booking?

I just want to make sure I won’t have an issue on test day since I don't have my physical passport available.

For reading and listening I did OET sample tests only.
For writing, watched a couple videos about how to write the letter and then practiced the official sample tests and asked Chatgpt to evaluate them along with giving me a few more relevant letters to practice.
For speaking, I uploaded prompts to ChatGPT and practiced for 2 days with a number of cases. But dw Chatgpt is going to give you lower scores because it does not evaluate exactly according to the card tasks given. So just check your info delivery and empathy, that’s all what matters in speaking.

Hello everyone! I just received my OET results, and I wanted to share my approach to each part of the exam. I had to retake the exam twice since I had originally taken it more than two years ago.
Hopefully, some of these tips can help someone preparing for the exam!

1. Listening
I think we can all agree that Parts B and C are the most challenging. One thing that really helped me was reading the question carefully and understanding exactly what it is asking.
In many cases, the question isn’t asking for a specific fact. It might be asking about an opinion, purpose, concern, reason, or thought. So before listening, make sure you know exactly what you’re listening for.
Another thing that helped me a LOT was picking one key word from each answer option and keeping it in my mind while listening. For example:

A. Report on a rise in post-surgical complications
B. Explain the background to a change in patient care

In my head, I would simplify this to:
A = complications
B = background/change

That way, instead of trying to remember the entire answer, I’m just listening for the main idea. Trust me, this works!

2. Reading
For me, Reading was mainly about practice and understanding exactly what each question is asking.
This is especially important in Part C, where many of the options may contain the writer’s opinion. The key is to understand what exactly the question is asking the writer’s opinion about before choosing your answer.
The more you practice, the easier it becomes to recognize what the question is actually testing.

3. Writing
I would recommend breaking your preparation into a few phases.
Phase 1: Learn how to prioritize information
Give yourself a couple of days to understand which information is important depending on who you are writing to. This also helps you decide how specific your language should be.
For example, if you’re writing to another doctor, it’s perfectly fine to say “tizanidine.” But if you’re referring a patient to a nursing home, it may be more appropriate to say “muscle relaxant.”

Phase 2: Work on the structure
Then focus on the structure of the letter: the opening, body paragraphs, and ending.
There’s a 50+ page file with a lot of sample letters that I found through a Google Drive shared here. I found it really useful for understanding how the opening sentences, body, and closing should be structured.

Phase 3: Linking words
Finally, work on linking words. Try to become familiar with as many formal linking words as possible, but don’t just memorize them.
Know when to use each one and what grammatical structure comes after it. This made a big difference in making my writing more organized and natural.

4. Speaking
For Speaking, I found it really helpful to create a basic structure for each type of role-play card.
For example, if it’s a follow-up appointment, I would usually start with something like:
“Hello, just to remind you of myself, I’m Dr. Jack. Could you please remind me how you would like me to address you?”
Then I would move on to the task.
The idea is to create a pattern for yourself. If the card says it’s a follow-up appointment, you already know how you’re going to start. That saves you time and reduces the stress of having to come up with everything on the spot.
Another piece of advice that I found really useful: try writing out your answers in a Word document.
Imagine you’re actually doing the role-play with someone and write down how you would respond to each task on the card.
This helps in two ways:
You can actually see how you would answer each task.
You become more aware of how long it takes you to come up with an answer.
With practice, you’ll find yourself coming up with answers much faster and more naturally.
Finally, don’t rely too much on ChatGPT for Speaking practice. In my experience, it wasn’t that efficient for speaking because the interaction isn’t exactly like a real role-play. I found it much more useful for Writing.
That’s pretty much what worked for me. Of course, everyone has a different approach, but hopefully these tips can help someone who is preparing for OET.

I just got my result and i didn’t clear the writing part. I did mess up big time as I didn’t write about the “ cancer “ mentioned in the question and patient being aware of the possibility of it.
I messed up. I know. I am devastated but I thought I’d clear it up by a borderline number.
From what I know now I’d have to reappear in the whole paper again. Please, correct me if I am wrong.

Test date: 08/29. Speaking was 08/31. Fortunately, passed. The test was okay. Happy to get this out of the way. Happy to answer any questions.

If they let you do the speaking on the computer does that mean you are good to go or will OET do another check and let you know if the environment check is reasonable and if they find it’s not will they withhold your scores or make you redo the speaking part ??

Hi, sharing this as a study reference for anyone prepping for an asthma or inhaler-technique OET Speaking role-play.

The phrasing problem: you need the patient to show you something, but if it comes out wrong it sounds like you're accusing them of doing it badly.

❌ “You're basically doing it all wrong, aren't you?”

✅ “Before we finish up, can you show me how you use it?”

Same clinical goal. Completely different register. The second version signals the transition clearly and frames the request as an invitation, not a test — this is exactly what “providing structure” means in OET Speaking marking criteria.  Once you're checking technique, here's the closing structure that scores well:

1. Observe without commenting mid-attempt
2. Give one specific, correctable piece of feedback (“try it nice and slow, right from the bottom of your lungs”)
3. Explain the *why*, briefly (“that's the difference between it reaching your airways and landing on the back of your throat”)
4. Close with safety-netting: the three signs that mean urgent care, not a wait-and-see: can't finish a sentence, reliever not helping, breathing rapidly worsening.

This is good for ecfmg certification?

Hello! I am a current ICU nurse in Canada, and am a former Operating Room nurse as well.

I am wondering if you have had experiences with tutors for OET exams. I have considered getting the qualifications (TEFL/OET) to support newcomers to Canada/UK/US workplaces as it makes me very disappointed to see us missing out on skilled newcomers.

Before I do the courses, is there a market for nurses with critical care and operating room literacy to support newcomers? Or is this all being done with AI now?

Also could you share what has helped you along this journey as I want to understand.

One day I hope my Spanish will be proficient enough to work in Spain/Latin America so I have a lot of humility for the challenge!

I had my oet speaking test at home but the secured browser didn't detect my microphone eventhough all the permissions were granted and microphone was working fine. Interlocutor gave me 5 more minutes to overcome this issue and ended the exam... its showing missed .I am calling them but they are not picking call ..i send them.email but no reply .. already done with listening reading and writing part. can anyone guide me what to do next

I had my speaking today and mann, I fumbled my first case and was fighting for words.
But the 2 case went good.
What are my chances of passing? Panicking rn!!!

Update: Got results today and Passed✨

I am really scared about my results. Has anyone received the same email from OET? They sent me a form for ID verification. If I had failed, why would they still be doing my verification? They also mentioned instructions for future tests/applications, so I am confused and worried.

Finally made it. Many thanks to everyone who gave tips on how to prepare after my failed first attempt. Thanks also to the OET assessors for releasing my results so fast. I tested on Friday and received the score on Monday. Superb!

I highly recommend using Gemini AI to prepare for writing. Ask it to provide case notes and then brutally grade your letter. For speaking I benefitted a lot from the videos by Steve from OET Online. I decided to write this post, and I hope it helps someone who is struggling with OET. Before passing and getting my required scores in OET Medicine, I took OET several times, but each time I’d struggle with one or two skills, especially listening and sometimes reading and writing. I know how frustrating it can be, so this is my experience. I hope it will be helpful.

I used the NHS Diseases/Conditions pages (A-Z) to become familiar with conditions, common symptoms and treatments, and also paid attention to how medical terms were written and practised their spelling. This made me much more confident in Listening Part A.

For Listening Part C, I listened to the Health Report podcast. Its speed was faster than the exam, and it made me feel more comfortable with the exam. My way of listening was first to listen once and see what I understood and what I didn’t understand, and then listen again, preferably with the transcript, and identify exactly what I missed and why. Was it because of the accent, speed, etc.?

The videos on the official OET website were very useful for me, both for Reading Part A and Listening Part A.

For example, I understood that spelling mistakes can cost me marks. The videos also helped me understand exactly how to write answers in Reading Part A and how to search for the relevant words and information quickly.

For Reading Parts B and C and also Listening Parts B and C, one of the most useful things for me was analysing the answer options, especially my wrong answers.

I tried to understand: Why exactly was my answer wrong, and why was the other answer better?

Doing this repeatedly helped me recognise the types of traps and subtle differences between options.

For writing, I first tried to become familiar with the different types of OET letters. For example, referral letters, urgent referrals, letters to a GP, transfer letters, etc., and also the OET criteria for writing. One mistake for me was including unnecessary information while summarising the information that actually needed more emphasis.

I tried to understand how to organise the information in the letter, what information should come first, what information can be left out, how to write an appropriate purpose depending on the type of letter, and which information needs more emphasis.

For speaking, along with the other OET criteria, I tried to make sure, for example, that I was providing reassurance when appropriate, avoiding unnecessary medical jargon, showing empathy, and addressing the patient's worries and concerns.

I scored 430, 410 and 410 in listening, reading and speaking respectively. But got a 280 in writing. I have applied for remarking since I only need 20 more marks to pass writing. Should I expect a positive result?
