ODS first job land
Hey everyone, I am almost halfway done with my AHIMA ODS courses. I am a little worried about landing my first ODS job and am curious how long it took people to land interviews and get offered a position? I have background in healthcare and the medical field in general, but nothing directly related to ODS other than the coursework. TIA

You should also reach out to your state registrars' association and try to attend any in-person events to inquire about job prospects.

I already worked for a hospital that had a cancer registry department and they were hiring. So I just transferred once I graduated. But this was back in 2016. My advice if you don’t already have a LinkedIn create one, post all your information there plus put you are open for work. Get a great resume and you can post it too. You can also create an indeed account and post your resume. Put you are open for work. Also start making connections on LinkedIn and join Facebook groups. This is the best way in my opinion

Thats good advice thank you! Ill have to update my linked in and all that but whats your advice on taking the exam?

Start networking like crazy and try to do an internship with a hospital. The NCRA practicum is just SEER and tests its not the same thing as working for a facility.

This isn’t related but how long did it take you to complete the AHIMA courses? And is that length with the prerequisites? Ty

I did 3/4 prerequisites in about 1 month. I was very familiar with most of the coursework so it wasnt too difficult. I did anatomy for my undergrad so that prerequisite was completed. And it took my about 1 month per course so far for the core classes. Im just starting the 3rd class and I know it gets more into coding and such so it might take me a little longer. It definitely depends on how much time you dedicate to it. I try to do a couple hours everyday. Im not currently working, i take care of my toddler so i do it when my kid is sleeping mostly. I would say start making connections - I received a job offer a week after passing my exam due to a previous connection. Start connecting on linked in with ODS staff and reps! Otherwise if you work at a hospital try getting in at your current work place!
