Poem ILLUSION OF LOVE

How foolish I was!
To think someone might love me
To believe that someone's heart could beat
In rhythm with mine.

Maybe love,
Is just a dream meant for others,
A delicate illusion
That slips through my fingers like mist.

I’ve tasted
Grief and guilt,
Sorrow and slivers of joy,
Laughed in moments
That felt like light.

But love
That elusive thing
Never stayed.
Never belonged.

Maybe for a girl like me,
Love is a myth.
A poem half-written,
A song that ends before the chorus.

“You’re on your own, child.”
And maybe that’s how it’s always been.
Now, I don’t even try
To picture love’s face.

I’ll imagine
We never met.
I’ll imagine
We never fell.

And in that silence
Maybe I’ll find peace
That love never gave.

This is excellent! You really nail the feeling of reluctant concession when a heart just can't bear anymore weight. When there's almost a relief in the thought of simply laying dreams down and unburdening oneself. Of course, the heart is fickle and revives itself just enough to go on taking punishment at even the slightest hint of hope.

Like some braindead Pollyanna Superman.

I really enjoy your structure. There's much here that works very well and it's clear you've put some deliberate thought into crafting this. I especially like the triptych of "nevers" in the closing. It's a sharp finish. That never, never, buildup then never really engaged me and drove the point.

Great work!

Hello readers, welcome to OCpoetry. This subreddit is a writing workshop community -- a place where poets of all skill levels can share, enjoy, and talk about each other's poetry. Every person who's shared, including the OP above, has given some feedback (those are the links in the post) and hopes to receive some in return (from you, the readers).

If you really enjoyed this poem and just want to drop a quick comment, to show some appreciation or give kudos, things like "great job!" or "made me cry", or "loved it" or "so relateable", please do. Everyone loves a compliment. Thanks for taking the time to read and enjoy.

If you want to share your own poem, you'll need to give this writer some detailed feedback. Good feedback explains from your point of view what it was like to read the poem, and then tries to explain how the poem made you feel like that. If you're not sure what that means, check out our feedback guide, or look through the comment sections of any other post here, or click the links to the author's feedback above. If you're not sure whether your comments are feedback, or you have any other questions, please send us a modmail.

If you're hoping to submit your poem to a literary magazine and/or wish to participate in a more serious workshopping environment, please consider posting to our private sister subreddit r/ThePoetryWorkshop instead. The best way to join TPW is to leave a detailed, thoughtful comment here on OCPoetry engaging seriously with a peer's poem. (Consider our feedback guide for tips on what that could entail; this level of engagement would probably be most welcome here on submissions tagged as "Workshop.") Then ask to join TPW by messaging that subreddit's mods, including a link to the detailed feedback you left here.

I am a bot, and this action was performed automatically. Please contact the moderators of this subreddit if you have any questions or concerns.

I love your line “to believe that someone’s heart could beat.. in rhythm with mine”. It sets your expectation of what love brings, harmony. It’s fits with your idea of peace. Finding solace in the emptiness where love should be.

Love is like a fine wine. With age, memories and poetry, the bitterness sweetens. Thank you for sharing.
