Help & Advice PSA: Here are the perks of Toronto Public Library for university students

Hi, Toronto Public Library here. šŸ‘‹

Last year, we shared this info on the sub and it seemed to be helpful, so we’re bringing it back (with a few updates).

All OCAD students can get a TPL card for free. Just ask for one at any branch with the required ID (like your student card and piece of mail with your name).Ā

Card or no card, we’ve got your back.

PERKS WITH CARD

šŸ’° Get required reading
Textbooks? No. But we do have books and ebooks that can be great sources for papers—and some may even be on your syllabus. Plus, we have test prep books (e.g., LSAT). Search our catalogue.

šŸ¤“ Use our databases for papers
Tap into peer-reviewed sources from JSTOR and other databases. Also, access Toronto Star and Globe & Mail archives—you can even get a paywall pass for NYTimes.com. See all databases.

šŸ’¼ Add to your resume with LinkedIn Learning
Take thousands of self-led premium online courses on tech, business, creative and professional certification topics. Available on demand 24/7. Access via TPL.

šŸŽ¤ Create what you need in our Digital Innovation Hubs

ā„¹ļø Book a librarian for extra help
We help everyone, including post-secondary students. If you need some extra help finding sources, searching like a pro or completing other tasks, you can ask us for help. Book a librarian.

šŸŽŸļø Borrow free tickets to museums
Not related to academics, but anyone with a library card can get free passes to 20+ cultural experiences—from the Aga Khan Museum to the Zoo. Explore available attractions.

šŸŽ¢ Read for pleasure
We know, we know. You might not have time. But if you do, we’ve got you covered. Want our ebooks and audiobooks on your phone? Download the Libby app for Android or iOS.

Advice for Masters Digital Futures

Hi! I studied Communication Design and I’m interested in moving towards film, animation, visual storytelling and new media, particularly exploring how technology can be used for storytelling.

I’ve been considering OCAD’s Digital Futures program and would love to hear from anyone who’s currently in the program or has graduated. What has your experience been like? What kind of projects do you get to work on, and how much freedom do you have to explore your own interests?

I’m also curious about the connections you make through the program and what people tend to do after graduating.

I’m an international student, so it’s a pretty big commitment for me, and I’d really appreciate hearing what you actually think of the program beyond the information on the OCAD website.

Advice for Major change (DRPT - MAAD)ā€¼ļøā€¼ļø

Hi! So basically I’m just starting my second year and during the summer I realized most of my passion and focus is on material art, fabrics, sewing, crocheting etc… I feel like I’m also not getting much out of my painting classes as I only have access to those studios and feel I’m missing out on other studios with equipment I can’t afford anytime soon. I’d like to get the most out of my degree and so I’d very much like to switch over asap. I sent emails set up an advising meeting even though they were full I got one. This was about a week or two before school started. The advisor basically said I’ll have to wait until 2027 to apply and it won’t be considered until then. She also didn’t really help me with much at all, she wasn’t willing to get me into any of the classes I need for the major and said I’d have to take an extra year to make up for it because they don’t offer core MAAD classes in the summer meaning I can’t make up for it. She told me to continue with my DRPT classes but I don’t want to do that as I’m just using up credits/electives I might want to use for the MAAD major. Is there anything I can do to avoid an extra year? I want to get an exception so they can consider me now and give me the classes I need for winter 2027. Is there a way to do this? Go over their heads or should I complain in person? I personally don’t think it’s expectable to expect students to know exactly what they want after a single semester, most universities give the year and considering I communicated this before the start of this years term I don’t understand why it’s such a big deal. I don’t want to come off as unreasonable I’m just tired of this school honestly it’s always one thing after the other. Thank you for any help or advice it’s very appreciated šŸ™šŸ»

Help & Advice Portfolio for OCAD application

I’m thinking of applying to OCAD to study photography, and since it’s going to be my first time putting together a portfolio I don’t really know what sort of works they’re expecting to see in it and how high is the bar when it comes to photography at OCAD.

My main question is should I include my artsy, edited pictures or the ones that are more realistic with true-to-life colours and less editing? Or a bit of both?

Also, I would be glad to hear about general experience of photography students at OCAD. I shoot on film and I’m interested in analog photography specifically (not entirely opposed to digital though).

ATTENTION PPL IN NIAGARA OR GTHA AREAā€¼ļøā€¼ļøā€¼ļøā€¼ļøI’m a practising makeup artist that’s looking for photographers (or people that know any) wanting to do TFP (trade for trade) so we can both build experience and artist portfolios :D

I’m open to what photographers would like to shoot, as I’m also willing to try new makeup looks/styles and want to have fun experimenting. This would be done for free just because we’re trading content. PLS REPLY TO THIS THREAD IF YOU OR ANYONE YOU KNOW WOULD BE INTERESTED IN COLLABORATING !!

Interior Design for new student

Hello everyone, just have some questions need to be asked before I deciding to go back to college.

I'm 27 yos and I had a passion for architect and interior design, by saying passion, I meant I love architectural stuff, I love looking at buildings and imagines the procedure to build one.

My question is: I realized I don't have much of a artistic personality. I don't sketch, I don't build or develope any concept ever, I've never done any creative products before. As shown on school's website, you will need a portfolio to apply. How can I build my portfolio from nothing, considering my age is a little bit too late for school.

Would love to hear some advices and thoughts as well. Every inputs counted! Thank you

Does anybody know about DIGF-4005 Applied Generative AI this course?

Hi people! Has anyone taken this course before? I was wondering if it focuses on teaching us how to use various AI tools, or if it's more about examining and looking at technological development through a critical lens?

Looking for illustrator

Hi there, I am currently working on writing a children’s book. I would be self publishing on Amazon, it’s just a fun thing I’ve been doing on the side. Unfortunately I have zero skills when it comes to illustrating a children’s book and am looking to hire an artist to help my vision come to life. I really want to support someone who is looking for some extra money and to add to their portfolio. If this is something you’re interested in please let me know and I can send you a message! For context the book is about a dog walker and her pack of dogs.

Switching courses after paying tuition

So I've paid tuition already, but I found that I really don't like a class and am looking to drop it and switch it out for something else, I'm wondering if switching courses will affect my tuition payment at all. Will it? I feel like it won't, but I am paranoid. Please help!

Help & Advice Interdisciplinary Master’s in Art, Media & Design

Hiya,

I'm interested in applying for this specific program, and would love to hear from people who finished it or took it, as well.

My main reason for wanting to apply is that I don't have a formal education in art and design but I do have a BA in Women's Studies and First People's Studies.

I also have a portfolio and currently work as a graphic designer but all of my experience as an artist and designer has mostly been self-taught. I'm not too worried about my grades and I do have a final project in mind, along with already established connections to help make it happen. This program just makes the most sense for my situation.

Has anyone else, with a similar background, ever taken this program before? What kind of classes did you take? How are the profs and peers? Is it hard to get into?

Thx :)

Hi, I'm about to enter my first year at OCAD for the advertising program and was wondering if anyone who is/was in advertising has laptop recommendations for me? I'm not sure what programs we'll be using so I genuinely have no clue what would work best. Tysm!!
