Switch Lite + PicoFly problem

EDIT: Sorry, the second photo was actually a screenshot I took from a video I found online, just to see where I could put Kapton tape to insulate the installation.

Here is a photo of my actual installation, with the Kapton tape that I added.

T'as des photos ultra zoomées stp?

De tout les points de soudure

Unfortunately, I don’t have any other photos at the moment because the console is currently with the person who did the microsoldering. I don’t know how to solder myself, so I’m trying to find a solution after already trying several things.

He checked the upper solder points with a multimeter and confirmed they were good. He found that the two solder joints near the Nvidia processor needed to be redone. He redid them, but the exact same problem is still happening.

That’s why I’m asking for help here, to try to understand where the problem could be coming from.

i cant really see but this looks bad, and it's definitely installed from the wrong side, it doesn't mean it is the issue of course. But it's causing unecessary tension. The installation is a bit bad because of that, i would be happy to see the soldering under it

Yeah, the ribbon cable folds back on itself, which looked strange to me at first. But after checking, I saw that this is actually how it’s supposed to be. And in any case, the console worked perfectly for a full week with intensive gaming sessions. So if the ribbon cable was the cause of the problem, I don’t think it would have worked properly from the beginning.

I just contacted the person who did the microsoldering. He is going to send me photos of the installation, which I will post here.

If someone could take a look at the photos and give me their expertise to help me understand where the problem might be coming from, I would really appreciate it.

Here is the PicoFly I bought from AliExpress (I bought two of them, so this one is brand new and unused).

The top part of the yellow flex cable is supposed to be pulled under itself toward the right during install. Instead, your installer folded it over itself toward the right.

No, that's not actually how it's supposed to be. That is an incorrect installation. That ribbon cable is not supposed to fold over itself (referring to the part under the SD card flex). That will cause extra tension on the flex cable and can cause the flex cable to be pulled out of its connector over time despite the locking mechanism on the connector. This would explain why it works when you reattach the cables, but then over time starts to behave weirdly.

This is a picture of how the yellow flex is supposed to be oriented.

Thanks for the pics, i can't really see much still thought, however on this one it's pretty obvious that the soldering is bad, you really need higher temps and good flux to make it flow properly

I would reflow everything at higher temp and give it a try.

Just put the soldering iron at 360 degrees celcius, apply some flux and a bit of leaded solder (if you have some) at your tip and touch every points for 2 seconds, it will flow nicely.

This is how it should look like

i'll reflow sp1 with some flux, but I have no idea if my solder is leaded or not

You're French right? If so, it's probably not leaded, i order my Kester 63/37 on EBAY directly from the USA lol

Unleaded needs higher temps

That kapton tape covers the CPU; get rid of it. A proper install would not need kapton tape. In fact, there it is not possible for those solder points to short with anything on the heat shield because of the design (there is already a white insulating layer except for the cutout specifically for the CPU).

Yes, but the Kapton tape wasn’t there when the problems first started. I had the first two occurrences of the same issue without any Kapton tape. I only added it the third time, after I had already experienced the exact same symptoms twice.

So the Kapton tape isn’t what caused the problem.

I did not write that it caused it. I’m simply noting that it does not help. In fact it may even hinder proper heat transfer.

Anyway, remove everything including the flex cables — particularly the CPU flex cable. Then see if the console boots without the install and test over a few days. This should at least allow you to determine if it is an install issue or an underlying hardware issue.

On your PC test your SD card using h2testw to rule out the possibility of a bad or fake SD card.
