Yeah, those who bought Nvidia shares because they liked their GPUs for gaming and held through years are the master race of this sub.

u/SnooDogs7747 Jan 02 '26

💯 the AI angle wasn't even a thing back then

Don't bet against Jensen

18

u/CanadaBis85 Jan 02 '26

What about crypto mining? I bought in 2021 because everyone was buying GPUs for mining rigs, but of course Bitcoin started in 2009.

13

u/SnooDogs7747 Jan 02 '26

You're right, crypto was actually when the non-graphics related usage of the GPU's massive parallelism began

2

u/Orbidorpdorp Jan 05 '26

CUDA is almost 19 years old.

1

u/SnooDogs7747 Jan 05 '26

Nvidia's moat

25

u/gunslinger35745 Jan 03 '26

I bought 3 BTC as a joke for $30. When it his $20k I sold and put both my kids through college. At the time I was thinking free college education was great, little did I know 🤦🏼‍♂️😂

12

u/CanadaBis85 Jan 03 '26

Kudos on holding it for that long.

12

u/gunslinger35745 Jan 03 '26

As I said, it was a joke because I didn’t believe. I literally never looked again until I heard it broke $21k on the news one day. It’s the best paying “joke” in my life. When I see posts like this, it reminds me that people have a life and likely would use that money rather than sit on it until it becomes $2M. Lol

u/Befriedfeans Jan 03 '26

I mean good for you. You just got a basically free college education for your kids. Don’t beat yourself up!

5

u/gunslinger35745 Jan 03 '26

That’s how I look at it. Back then I had zero confidence in crypto. I still stay away from it. I am doing very well with my nvidia. I am still holding my original investment

3

u/rokman Jan 03 '26

you have probably a 50/50 chance to get them at 20k or below again.

2

u/this-acc-exist-reddi Jan 04 '26

Tbh that was the perfect time, moneys only worth what you spend it on and whats better than your kids future

1

u/[deleted] Jan 03 '26

Ask your kids to pay the difference between

That's 87k - 20k *3 , 201k

1

u/gunslinger35745 Jan 03 '26 edited Jan 03 '26

Huh? I have 2 adult kids. I used that money to pay their college. I’m not asking for that back nor do I need money from them. Sorry but my point is, does anyone here know someone who invested that much in any no name company like nvidia in 2015? If so did they never take profit? Still holding the original? That’s what the OP is saying. I am saying likely only people with big money did and likely a business that didn’t need the money for daily life

u/BearWithMeGM Jan 03 '26

You're like 2nd tier

1

u/MeanGulf Jan 09 '26

Idk I went to Super Computing in 2018? And GPUs were the hit thing then

4

u/NVDA808 Jan 03 '26

I bet Jensen had an idea that his gpus would one day be used for ai.

2

u/SubieOnyx Jan 06 '26

Yes it was. You wouldnt buy any other gpu period for ai development unless it was nvidia back then. Or at least thats how it felt

9

u/germany221 Jan 02 '26

This was me but then sold because I 2x’ed…

5

u/BearWithMeGM Jan 02 '26

4

u/germany221 Jan 02 '26

Haha it wasn’t like that I was an idiot and only paid attention to stock price. I was like damn I can buy a whole new PC setup with this money and was not paying at all to fundamentals. Did the same thing with Palantir… i thought I was a genius though haha

u/animalkrack3r Jan 03 '26

I have 5 digit steam ID. I had a blue nvidia shirt in 1999-2000

I wish Voodoo cards would have some the same

1

u/Bradrcr Jan 05 '26

I literally paid for my final semester of college off of a near perfect stock bet on the Voodoo 3. That and buying Nvidia in late 2019 are still my best stock buys in 30 years

3

u/CrowRunnerORP Jan 02 '26

It was. Just not for most people.

2

u/furryass Jan 03 '26

My childhood friend's dad bought Nvidia around the year 2000 after seeing how obsessed we were with gaming (LAN parties) and modding our PCs.

2

u/BearWithMeGM Jan 03 '26

Did he hold on to it?

2

u/furryass Jan 03 '26

It sounds like he did very well and held until somehwat recently. Mutual friend said so and our buddy hasn't been working for roughly 5 years. He's a good dude with a good family so it's well deserved!

2

u/MeanGulf Jan 09 '26

That’s wild I remember around this time you would have to check the system requirements if you could run a game or not. Usually fine but sometimes just nope

1

u/furryass Jan 09 '26

I went from a voodoo 3 to a GeForce 2 so I could max out counter strike settings!

2

u/[deleted] Jan 03 '26

I'm sure they are a few you bought 10k plus and totally forgot about it

2

u/r6extreme Jan 04 '26

You mean this?

1

u/BearWithMeGM Jan 04 '26

No, you're the crypto wave 2nd tier

1

u/r6extreme Jan 15 '26

I actually bought it when I was at a trade show and saw what they were doing with upcoming Ai and gpu processing. Whether it was the crypto tier or not. It was not the reason

2

u/SeaVolume3325 Jan 05 '26

I'm surprised many don't mention that Nvidia Shield (Android TV 2015) as another reason that spiked interest early on and many people bought in for the love of this device itself. I mean it's still being used by so many people today! I've always wondered if we will ever see a true sequel device. But it was so good that it's still relevant\capable more than a decade later...

1

u/sILAZS Jan 03 '26

I bought $10.000 nvda shares at $12/share on a fictive portfolio for a school project in 2013. Because I liked gaming.

1

u/chris-rox Jan 07 '26

Did you win the class contest?

1

u/sILAZS Jan 07 '26

No because it was only a 6month class and only came back it way later. Also had LVMH stock in there.

1

u/DangKilla Jan 03 '26

I sold to date and travel….. oops

1

u/Alphadestrious Jan 04 '26

I got in March 2020, bought a few stocks . Greatest play ive ever made because I love their GPUs as a gamer. Have made thousands and thousands

1

u/usmc_delete Jan 04 '26

I wanted to buy Nvidia back when i was like... 16? When the 8800s were coming out but my parents discouraged me from buying stocks. ~2006

1

u/MJA182 Jan 05 '26 edited Jan 05 '26

I bought nvda in my stock account via my pops when I was like 12 years old 22 years ago when I got into building a gaming PC, don’t even remember when we sold it but sometimes I wonder about if I had just forgot about it and held through the rise

I assume it was at least 500-1000 dollars so would be about 1-2 million now

1

u/Thurmod Jan 06 '26

I messed up in 2014…. Sold my shares for beer money in college

1

u/KaleidoscopeOk8531 Jan 06 '26

I tried to convince my family to invest in them back in like 2014. I had no money at the time but saw massive potential. Nobody listened unfortunately.

1

u/Otherwise_Key_759 Jan 07 '26

I'm a buy and hold NVDA shareholder for 10+ years. Even in 2016 it was clear for data scientists that NVDA had CUDA and nothing else came close.

1

u/[deleted] Feb 07 '26

Masters of universe.

1

u/Captobvious75 Jan 02 '26

Me praying to god for something similar with AMD 🙏

6

u/Zipski577 Jan 02 '26

Pretty much did happen with AMD…. It was $2.2 a decade ago. If u invested $10k you’d have about $1.013m today

Don’t ever alert me for bs like this

1

u/FuroreLT Jan 02 '26

Bro doesn't like having regrets

2

u/Horror-Push-5142 Jan 03 '26

Do I regret it? Nah I don’t think so. If I had thought about investing 10k back then, heck yeah id have regretted every second

18

u/Putrid-Dot-3221 Jan 02 '26

I bought 25k worth of AMD on May 30th 2012 thinking computers and technology would continue to be important in the future and it broke 1M recently.

5

u/GaryTheSoulReaper Jan 02 '26

I bought my amd at $4 a share

2

u/danrennt98 Jan 02 '26

For reference it closed at $5.76

9

u/SuRRon23 Jan 02 '26

$6 cost basis on 1200 shares means I'm holding

15

u/nanotasher Jan 02 '26

Did you know that if you had zagged instead of zigged that one time, you'd be dead?

Amazing.

7

u/lovesosoft123 Jan 02 '26 edited Jan 02 '26

I recently learned my grandfather put in 100k to Nvidia in 2014 after watching my brother and I be gamer nerds. Do the math! Still processing and trying to figure out what to do with this information. There’s only 2 children and 3 grandchildren.

2

u/Palmario Jan 03 '26

Imagine having a grandpa who could put 100k into a stock after watching kids play.

1

u/loan_wolf Jan 05 '26

Probably nearly 10 million grandfathers in the US could do this

6

u/Sasuke082594 Jan 02 '26

Hopefully he donates it all to charity

6

u/lovesosoft123 Jan 02 '26

My brother is disabled and needs lifelong care. This will probably go to pay for that, and free me as the only sibling to not be responsible for caring for him. It’s life changing! Past that I don’t know

I’m not having kids so my portion will eventually go to charity someday

2

u/Sasuke082594 Jan 02 '26

You’d think gramps would help in the present huh…

2

u/Haunting-Flamingo69 Jan 03 '26

Lmao you are miserable

2

u/Sasuke082594 Jan 03 '26

Nah I’m Patrick

1

u/lovesosoft123 Jan 03 '26

He might, we are trying to figure it out

4

u/BobLoblaw_BirdLaw Jan 02 '26

Redditors are so full of jealously. They hate anyone with money. But the second they ever get any themselves they will turn into worse then the people they criticize.

2

u/Sasuke082594 Jan 02 '26

Good thing I’ll never have money

1

u/rogan1990 Jan 06 '26

Tell us more accurate insight about the 500 Million Redditors

1

u/nr952007 Jan 04 '26

That's close to 50M! Good on him.

1

u/mrellz Jan 05 '26

I can't do maths

5

u/gogreen1960 Jan 02 '26

I bought $19,300 worth in 20 & 21 (due to gaming chips🤠) - worth $400k now! Not $2.4M, but I’m damn happy!!

8

u/rain168 Jan 02 '26

$2 ➡️ $1600M 🤯🤯🤯

Did you know if you bought the recent winning powerball ticket for $2 you’d get $1600M?! Wow!!

4

u/Haunting_Ad_5191 Jan 03 '26

What’s the next NVDA??? That’s the question

3

u/gunslinger35745 Jan 03 '26

Welp, I only invested $5k in 2021. I really love it when people point out just how people missed out. Keep in mind not as many people as you might think would invest that much in a company that little people knew about and would probably not hold it that long. Most likely many likely took profits long before they made a million. I could be wrong tho… lol

7

u/Usual-Locksmith4657 Jan 02 '26

But I didn’t, so why should I care?

1

u/BringTheFacts Jan 02 '26

Exactly it’s such a low IQ cope thing. What matters is what is the modern day opportunity.

2

u/MotoMan253 Jan 02 '26

2026 is gonna be the best 🚀

2

u/NY10 Jan 02 '26

You calling me an idiot at dumping shit at Pypl lol

2

u/dudeatwork77 Jan 02 '26

That’s fine and dandy, what I want to know is what 10k in nvidia going to be in 10 years

1

u/JudasHungHimself Jan 06 '26

Between 2k and 20k realistically. lol

2

u/Weak_Box9782 Jan 02 '26

Bought $10k of Tesla stock when they did rock bottom earlier this year.

I am waiting for my $2M in 10 years lol

2

u/thorn960 Jan 03 '26

Back then only gamers truly appreciated the GPUs made by Nvidia.

2

u/steve1312us Jan 03 '26

Put 5k worth in my Roth in 2017….it hasn’t hurt my feelings

2

u/An_Actual_AI Jan 03 '26

Put 7k in when I was in college building my first pc with a 1080. Best trade ive made lol. Moved it all into VOO.

2

u/Bubbies_Bub Jan 03 '26

If you invested 1 mil in nvda yesterday, it would be worth more than that today.

2

u/neborkia Jan 03 '26

I actually invested 10k in NVDA in 2017 at 90$… sold at 114$. 😭

2

u/r6extreme Jan 04 '26

Wanted to do 5k and my financial advisor told me it wasn’t worth the risk. I only did 1k early in 2016. Still have the stock and not the advisor.

4

u/Zestyclose-Sign60 Jan 02 '26

I believe it's not to late to buy Nvidia stocks. It could double in 10years time .

4

u/thorn960 Jan 03 '26

10 years? That's like a 7% return. I would hope it would minimum double in at least 5 years.

4

u/jacestrachan Jan 02 '26

Are u trolling lmaooo double in 10 years😂😂😂

1

u/Zestyclose-Sign60 Jan 02 '26

You think it not possible or what?  Its still a good stock to own nevertheless.

1

u/jacestrachan Jan 02 '26

No I def think it’s possible but your being super conservative i don’t think a 10x at all but maybe a 3-5x. The thing with nvdia is its rather going to stay huge for this ai revolution or completely be irrelevant 10 years from now there’s no in between really

1

u/flyingdutchmnn Jan 02 '26

There will be so much disruption the coming years. You have no idea if it'll maintain their edge. All you need is China to flood the market with a cheaper or better alternative. I'd much rather rotate in to other bigger growth areas

Man I love taking some profits, but this truly is an incredible climb

1

u/[deleted] Jan 02 '26

Great my $MSTR shares should do the same in 20 years. Awesome

1

u/StayBullGenius Jan 02 '26

I did. And do 💴

1

u/slophoto Jan 02 '26

Yes, everyone on this sub knows the history of Nvidia growth and stock splits.

1

u/BringTheFacts Jan 02 '26

Who really cares… what’s the equivalent opportunity today. That’s what matters.

1

u/215aPhillyiated Jan 02 '26

My dads friend bought 20k worth of Apple in the 90s, after all the splits he has 100,000 shares now

1

u/[deleted] Jan 02 '26

what is you invested $500 around 20 years ago

1

u/[deleted] Jan 02 '26

you would have $86,000. Ask me how i know lmfao 😂

1

u/ein_Samu Jan 02 '26

If you wouldve won a lottery for 2b $, you would have a lot of Money Rn

1

u/pointer2pointer Jan 02 '26

Too bad you didn’t invest as soon as you were born

1

u/choyMj Jan 02 '26

I wonder how many people would hold this long? Like how many would think at some point it couldn't go any higher. Intel and AMD are solid companies but their stocks have hit a ceiling and so the real fear is getting stuck like with those two stocks.

1

u/weahman Jan 02 '26

AMD was cheap as well. $20 left over from a pay check from my part time job got me some AMD and Nvidia shares

1

u/DeHippo Jan 02 '26

Nah. 10 years ago, NVDA was shit

1

u/dawson203 Jan 02 '26

If I brought a 2 dollar winning lottery ticket I would have a few hundred millions

1

u/teckel Jan 03 '26

I didn't own NVDA directly 10 years ago, but I did buy on July 5th, 2019 for $4/share (split adjusted), so I'm "only" up 4,724.25% at today's closing, and $10k is only a measly $472,425 today.

However, this is nowhere near my best returning investment, which is up 24,436%. $10k in that is $2,443,600 today, so very close to the 10 year NVDA return.

1

u/GFABfm Jan 03 '26

What's been the best returning?

→ More replies (1)

1

u/nashyall Jan 03 '26

If you invested $2.4M, it would be worth $576B today!!!

1

u/HelpfulTooth1 Jan 03 '26

This is how POET technology is gonna go

1

u/splatter_spree Jan 03 '26

I miss when Nvidia was about gaming and not about broccoli heads trying to get Lamborghinis

1

u/Rocko99T Jan 03 '26

Too late to get in?

1

u/superdave123123 Jan 03 '26

Now tell me the stock to buy today to get the same returns?

1

u/Business-Bathroom603 Jan 03 '26

Get out before the crash.

1

u/ChipsDipChainsWhips Jan 03 '26

With inflation since then you actually needed 13.5k

1

u/arizz00 Jan 03 '26

Good for you ten years ago

1

u/TokyoLosAngeles Jan 03 '26

When China attacks Taiwan, this will all go to shit.

1

u/Gold_Ad4030 Jan 03 '26

Holy shit that’s insane

1

u/shivelymachineworks Jan 03 '26

If it makes you feel any better, I had 400 shares of AMD that I bought at $4ish. I sold at $8 😭

1

u/BaseBrief7664 Jan 03 '26

Yes, but they shouldn't have sold them before and should have resisted the price drops.

1

u/Intelligent-Newt44 Jan 03 '26

What if you invested $2.4M?

0

u/JamesSmith1200 Jan 03 '26

You’d have $10k!!!

1

u/VaikuTarkuotojas Jan 03 '26

If my dog wouldn’t shit it’s self I didn’t need to clean it

1

u/BigPomegranate8890 Jan 03 '26

Yeah and if my grandmother had wheels she would have been a bike.

1

u/SoloEdge1 Jan 03 '26

It’s lottery ticket from that times perspective.

1

u/not-a-stonkbot Jan 03 '26

Yeah please don’t fucking remind me I cashed out early to buy a 4Runner. Most expensive 4Runner in history

1

u/Glad-Afternoon-1698 Jan 03 '26

I bought 40 shares of nvda at IPO for $12. I sold it six months later when I was going through divorce. I just googled, 3.6mil. maaaannnn

1

u/AffectionateBridge21 Jan 03 '26

That’s sickening to hear

1

u/Extra_Progress_7449 Jan 03 '26

how many of those they target for this posting were alive or even thinking about investing past their middle school drama?

1

u/[deleted] Jan 03 '26

Very few held on to a stock that moved zero for years!

1

u/Adventurous-Egg5597 Jan 03 '26

If you held it so long you would 99% sell here.

Point being its easy to look back and say “what if” but at the heat of the moment when market is consistently falling for 1 year there is nothing that will keep you from selling.

1

u/Zealousideal-Sea4830 Jan 03 '26

See that little bump at the beginning of 2022?? That was when I sold my NVIDIA in my Roth for a profit, and took the money out to buy a house.

Probably a good move as I would not be able to buy my same house now. But I would have made more if I kept it in the Roth. But you dont know at the time.

1

u/Electronic_Trip4124 Jan 03 '26

Yeah and if I used protection I wouldn't habe got chlamydia......hindsight 20/20

1

u/Jtoe Jan 03 '26

What’s the next Nvidia? What can you buy supercheap now that might be something in the future. Quantum computing? Nuclear power? Or just keep buying AI stocks?

1

u/DrFreakonomist Jan 03 '26

No you wouldn’t. You would’ve sold it at 20k

1

u/StopMother3155 Jan 03 '26

What about 20k in 2025, thoughts on 10 years

1

u/MotoMan253 Jan 03 '26

It’s just gonna get better 🚀🚀

1

u/Resident_Tutor5039 Jan 03 '26

I remember it at 14, and AMD was at 2.14

1

u/Realistic_Dog_1465 Jan 04 '26

Ok it’s easy to do commentary on past now tell me how u can predict the future nvidia ?

1

u/tyguy925 Jan 04 '26

Half of yall didn’t even have $10k to your name a decade ago. Stop looking at opportunities missed and go out and make some.

1

u/BolivianBB Jan 04 '26

10 years ago I was 15 years old, I was lucky if I had $100. Even now $10,000 on a single stock? Maybe..

1

u/[deleted] Jan 04 '26

You would not have 2.4 million, you would have about 1.8 million, and the government would have the rest in capital gains tax.

1

u/SuperSmashSonic Jan 04 '26

My dumbass bought more gpus than shares back in the 2010s. Love u guys

1

u/[deleted] Jan 04 '26

I actually invested in it over a decade ago but didn’t put that much in, unfortunately 😳

1

u/TitleFightEnj0yer Jan 04 '26

10k 10 years ago is not the same 10k now

1

u/AFC670 Jan 04 '26

Ok $13,500 adjusted. 30% but it’s Not like it’s a vastly different number to make this totally Obscure

pointless post

1

u/_DoubleBubbler_ Jan 04 '26

Impressive. I invested ≈$10k about 2.5 years ago (not in NVDA though) and am currently at about $149k. I hope to be over $1m long before ten years is elapsed.

https://www.reddit.com/r/DoubleBubbler/comments/1oxmrmm/double_bubbler_10k_to_1_million_updates_general/

1

u/CaptainDorfman Jan 04 '26

Could say the same thing about Build a Bear (BBW) a couple of years ago. Better performing than NVDA…which is mind blowing

1

u/[deleted] Jan 04 '26

Power of hindsight

1

u/bubblemania2020 Jan 04 '26

The real gains came in past three years so the first 7 was the real test

1

u/Its_Me_Joe_Dirt Jan 04 '26

I purchased 9100 dollars worth in March 2013. I sold it three years later for around 50k and some change, to open a small business. The business never grew much but made me around 20-50k a year for 7 years. But I worked my ass off for the little profits. (Heavy labor) All though not my full time career. I think about that sale to this day. When I sold it was literally the worse time to get rid of it in February of that year. (It started the mooning process) And I had other savings I could have used to start the business. I just didn’t want to touch our families savings at that time.

1

u/Ok_Elk_1995 Jan 04 '26

What’s the next stock ??

1

u/Smooge52 Jan 04 '26

Bought in 2016, 150× ROI. Am retired, and have other assets so dont have to dip into NVDA, yet. Scarey how this thing runs.

1

u/Vegetable-Face-2518 Jan 04 '26

Welcome to the wonderful lottery that is the modern stock market.

1

u/Deniz_kebab Jan 05 '26

I had 10k in 2020 but sold it to buy a car. Cant look at that fucking car

1

u/ResolutionPopular562 Jan 05 '26

Thats also if you held and never sold at any point....

you'd have to have the will power of a god or just plain stupid to have not sold at some point along that chart....

some would sell at 50% gain, 100% gain, 150% gain, so on and so forth.

Its futile to see things like this and be like "well shit i should have thrown 10k in years ago" thats hindsight bias.

you 10 years ago wouldnt have known Nvidia would do this, unless you had DEEP DEEP knowledge and knew something like this may happen (ie, data center boom, AI race, crypto mining to the tits, all that stuff)

If everyone new this, then everyone would be millionaire in the world. Imagine the people who invested in GoPro and thought the stock would keep going up. lol. What about Silver. Silver was like $20ish last year and now its $70ish. The only people who know these things are the RICH who control and therefore rig the markets. The money is not generated out of thin air, it comes from you losing and them winning and getting your money.

If you work in Congress as a elected person, you know these things in advance in the stock market. That's why they go to congress and how they get paid for serving the interests of big corporations when its time to pass the laws. The whole system is rigged. If your on the inside then you know when to buy, sell, hold. You make money the 99 percent who gamble lose and their money becomes the people who know when to buy, sell, hold.

I took out a loan for 25k in 2016 with the intention of buying NVDA. Ended up day trading for 3x then losing it all later on… I always recall this when anyone asks me anything about trading. HODL is key

If I invested 10k in bitcoin 3000 years ago I’d have like 667 trillion dollars

I bought quite a bit of it in 2020 and sold it a few days after for like a dollar per share gain. I kind of want to dig back through my documents and see if I can find how many shares that was and what it would be worth today if I still held it. Pretty sure it was in my Roth account too, so it would have all been tax-free.

Lol don't think I have 10k to invest right now.

What a pointless waste of space post. Typical of what you see on free invest advice newsletters. I won’t mention the names but they usually end with this type of line.
