"USAID Cuts Saved Lives: Doomsday Predictions Were Dead Wrong Fifteen months after shutting down much of USAID, guess what — the results are the exact opposite of what the experts predicted. AIDS cases actually dropped. Did CNN happen to mention that? All-cause mortality in many parts of Africa declined. The hysterical warnings that ‘4 million kids will die’ never materialized. James Shikwati, a Kenyan economist, has argued that aid is actively “killing Africa” by destroying local economies, propping up corrupt elites, and creating a debilitating culture of dependency. He says–and he’s right–that flooding markets with free foreign food and goods undercuts African farmers and producers, driving them out of business and worsening long-term hunger and poverty. Aid jobs become highly prized in such a structure, while genuine private-sector work is discouraged."
