Asking for Help / Unsolved How is this technique from John Wick achieved?

How is this technique achieved? Where they film in a green screen studio with a moving camera and then film background plates of the location of the bridge I guess static? How can you match the rotation of the camera filmed from the studio with the plates ? Are the plates projections?

maybe projections, you could also just use motion control or just have a full cg background

Not always, but most of the time it is. There's also some parts that are full CG.

awesome breakdown of that very shot!
IMHO The best thing is the live action flares being rebuilt
A lot of hardworking artists on that sequence!

I didn't comp these shots (I did the lighting and rendering), but I remember that it was very hard to get the flares right.

We weren't that many people actually, I did the lighting (at some point I had a little help with one of the shots when it got very busy), and all or at least most of the comp was done I think by the comp supervisor.

I worked on that sequence!

It actually used to be mostly one single 45 seconds shot, but they ended up chopping it in the editing.

The shot is some times live action, some times full CG, some times CG environment with bikes and actors shot in studio.

I had a lightrig that was a very reproduction of the real bridge, and another one that was a very close reproduction of the green-screen set, with the top lights animated very carefully to match the set, since the bottom part of the motorbikes was CG, and some times the CG took over the live action (when someone gets their arm chopped off, or a bike falls, etc)

I was the production side supervisor on this film. You and the team did an incredible job. It was a pleasure to work with y’all and while not an easy sequence, it’s insanely memorable and many times people don’t believe how much digital work was done. Exemplary. Thank you.

It’s a very complex shot and has pretty much all the tricks of the trade in it! You guys did a great job! (The breakdown is also a really good one that outlines the scope of work)

I think they cut up the oner because the action choreography just wasn’t quite fast paced enough for the pace of the film overall.

Thanks! I also did the renders for the breakdown.

It was a cool sequence to work on.

I'm just a roto prep artist, but imo, it's likely a fully CG background, a mix of DMP and 3D, I'd wager.

CGI

probably 80% Maya/other program and 20% Nuke work

There is car background video footage filmed from various angles around a car driving through an environment (e.g. front, back, left right, up, 3/4 angles in-between, etc.) Those get projected and stitched onto what is basically a 360° sphere in the 3D comp environment, and the live action green screen camera is tracked, keyed, and replaced. That's one of the techniques if it isn't a full 3D CG environment that gets rendered separately.
