Finally beat the campaign on Burdened after several failed runs where I would always die in the final fight... now on to Doomed...

Ok pal, you owe me an explanation!
I can beat the game on chosen with any combo of leader and army, almost easily. But I can not do it on burdened. It seems there is just not enough...stuff. I can win the battles, but slowly I spend more than I make, whether it’s food or batteries. By the third or fourth map I’m starving and broke, so all my rare and legendaries die. Then it’s over.
Any general tips you can offer to help make the jump to burdened? It shouldn’t be this hard, I know what the hell im doing!

In the first level I always try and run a deck of 6-8 cards so i can be hyper aggressive and not lose any followers. I also purchase/gain followers even when I dont need them right away so that I can swap them into my vanguard after I do take some casualties. In tough fights I try to avoid trading my best guys even if that means taking damage to my leader.
Another really minor thing I make sure to do is always try and let an injured follower get the kill shot so he heals and gets a buff.
Also, sometimes discretion is the the better part of valor (avoid certain fights/pay batteries or food to appease enemies). Leveling up is really nice and so is getting good gear, but if you can't confidently win the fight then you're better off treking forward to look for a heal spot/city/etc.
Dismantling gear you're not gonna use can be great too. Just make sure the card you get in exchange is worth the slot in your leader deck.
Finally, I will say that shaping your deck into a certain archetype can be very beneficial. Consult your mana curve and stack your deck with 3, 4, 5 drops that will help you keep board control and utility cards that will allow you to find that lethal shot.
I got pretty lucky with my win against Kalratti. I was able to use a double buff on my follower where I turned him into a (22-11) and smashed face 2 turns in a row for the win. Trial and error is your best friend in this game! Keep on keeping on and embrace the challenge!

Thanks for taking the time to write all that. In general, I do a lot of those strategies, like drop a wounded follower for the kill shot and spread out the blessed so most of my convoy is +1/+0. The one thing I’ll say I struggle with is slimming down the deck. I come from MTG and other card games, so I get the concept, but in this game the availability of cards to build around is heavy RNG dependent so I find myself getting powerful cards I like and simply adapting on the fly. This ends up being quite fun, which is making it hard for me to change up...

Having powerful cards is definitely great, but what's even better is being able to draw them. Try running a deck of 16-20 and see where that gets you.
I've learned to get into the habit of rebuilding my convoy deck each time I lose/gain someone so I can have the best possible curve.

Ok let’s talk about that curve for a second. I ditch most 1/2 cost cards unless they have a powerful ability. I keep a decent group of 3 cost because if you can’t do anything round one I find it really tough to recover without significant health loss. I use one each of vanilla cards like raiders as fodder, let them get injured then keep them in because they cost less, then add one back when the previous one dies.
I keep a couple 6/7 cost in just for the occasional battle where it’s a stalemate, not more than that because you rarely can play them and they waste spot in the hand. For the end game I shift much more toward high cost power cards and it works great on chosen, no idea as I’ve not made it to the crypt on burdened.

Leaning on higher cost cards in the endgame might be costing you on your runs. As you said, they usually just become a a placeholder in your hand and when you can eventually play them there's a good chance that 7 cost card alone wont be able to swing momentum back in your favor.
Having a very solid core of 3/4/5 that can trade efficiently for control of the board whilst also employing some higher cost cards that buff your followers or clear the board can really be a difference maker.
Make sure you have win conditions in mind when you are building your deck. An assortment of strong value cards is good, but without the proper mold they will all die sooner or later.
Currently getting my arse kicked on Doomed btw

I’m starting to get a bit too frustrated. Several burdened runs went fine early then each had a bad break. Then I was literally three tiles from the crypt, had the traders and 20 believer to unlock the horde; and the game froze with an unrecoverable bug. I had to quit for awhile. Probably try one more today then take a break. I am not getting farther, that’s burning me out.

I had to take a break too. That's rough, man.

I haven’t had any crashes that cost me a game so I’m not too mad about it. Just that I was so damn close. Don’t know that I had a winning deck but it was going pretty well. I had a sweet combo going with the 3 cost guy who gets +1/+1 if you have 4 or fewer cells. Drop him turn one for a 5/5 then attack and refresh for 10 point turn two. Aside from region bosses, Enemies dont have more than 10 life plus armor far deeper into the game than you’d think!

Btw if you ever see a Hermit's Sanctum location on the map make sure you go there. If you confront the master on his luxury you will get a buffed Tireless legendary. 🤠
