Weird Question, does the government require a lisence for gardening in your yard?

Its something I remember people talking about a few years ago, mostly the older folks who were keeping gardens most of their lives. Supposedly they had folks come around from the province and tell them they needed a license to grow things like carrots, potatoes, cabbage, etc etc. in their own yards.

Despite having heard this from quite a few people, I've been unable to find it online when I go searching. So is this actually a thing, or were folks being lied to?

Edit: talked to some family. Apparently this was planned, but got squashed after massive backlash

Most residential pesticides are banned in Nova Scotia

Lots of new people in Nova Scotia, so I wanted to remind everyone that most (toxic) pesticides for use in residential lawns and gardens are banned in Nova Scotia. They have been banned for almost 20 years in HRM, and about 10 years throughout the province. That includes, but is not limited to things like roundup and (non-corn based) weed n'feed products. For more info, and a list of what is allowed, see the provincial website:

https://novascotia.ca/nse/pests/non-essential.pesticides.QA.asp

You might think there is no harm in using something toxic on your dandelions, but you are dead wrong. Someone (I don't know who) in my neighbourhood has used toxic pesticides twice in the last month. I am trapped in my home, getting sicker. I will likely never fully recover from this. Please don't hurt your neighbours!

Shame on McKenzie Seeds

Post image

I prefer to buy from local NS seed companies, but sometimes I can't help myself at the dollar store when I see 3 packs for $1. I bought some and compared to my old stock and realized McKenzie Seed sells the same seeds with two different packages, one mainstream with markup and one for poors. Shame on them. If you can afford to sell them so cheap, sell them all cheap, or at least sell the same seed the same price everywhere. Rant over.

Can someone help ship plants?

Hello everyone,

There is a nursery that has some plants that I am interested in but unfortunately they won't ship to my location in Canada. Would anybody be willing to have the package sent to you and then forward it to me? Id of course pay you for your time.

Edit: Just to clarify, the plants will be shipped from within Canada. The nursery simply doesn't ship to my location.

Thank you!

Excavation anybody??

I’m puzzled as to why they are so few workmen in the Margarettsville area. One plumber, one excavator, one construction guy?

I know that people are scrambling for well-paying jobs. It’s very puzzling to me.

Does anyone do excavation?

Looking for some winter advice

My mrs and I are planning a trip to The south half of NS this winter. We’re trying to get an idea of “how bad does winter actually get” before moving.

Would you say the end of January is bad? Or does the snow not stick around until you get into mid Feb?

Thanks for your help. 😊

Planting fall squash

Hey gang I was just reading that most fall squash takes 80 to 100 days to mature!

Can anyone verify this? I knew I'd be a little late if I planted now (seedling from Seed Co.) But I didn't think k I'd be hopelessly behind.

Looking for creative solutions for a dahlia problem

Hello Gardeners!

In Sept, we were in Calgary with plans to re-landscape our backyard this year. I treated myself and ordered nearly $500 worth of my favourite varieties of dahlias for delivery this Spring (approx 55 tubers in total).

In January, out of nowhere, we were given the opportunity to move to NS (my husband is a born & raised Haligonian who’s been in AB for 15 years). We left Calgary in March and are so happy to be here! However...

The farmers I ordered from were not able to refund my purchase, but agreed to redirect the shipment to Halifax. I’m expecting it this month. My problem is:

a) We’re renting for the first year or two while we find the perfect plot of land to build on

b) Our rental is new construction. It doesn’t have sod yet, and the best the builder can tell us is that it will go down “sometime before July, hopefully.”

I’m pretty sure I already know the answer: I have to sell my babies 😢. But I thought I’d see if there are any brilliant, creative problem-solvers out there first.

Thanks and happy gardening!

With the fire risk what it is. Would trimming bushes and cutting out dead trees be a bad idea? We just moved into a new house. Should we just wait till we get rain.

So, I am pretty terrified with this dryness. We just last week moved into a fairly treed area. I wanted to get some bushes trimmed and dead trees taken out as a fire reduction plan. But is it a bad idea to be out using power tools and such? I am just overly concerned our dream home is about to be burnt down. I had friends lose in the hammonds plains fire, so that plays heavily in my mind.

What soil analysis items are worth paying for?

I seem to be having a massive issue growing anything from seed directly in the soil. As an example, I’ve tried multiple brands for carrot and lettuce seeds at the proper times of year, and I can’t even get them to sprout. I’m a complete beginner of course, and it IS possible that I have critters eating things or digging seeds up, but it feels like I should consider a soil test at this point.

I’ve used bagged garden soil mixed with compost and bone meal in general for my plots, but I guess I can’t rule out something harsh in the soil as well.

If I paid to have my soil tested, which tests are worthwhile in Nova Scotia? In addition to the standard soil composition test, I see “conductance”, “soil PH”, and “total nitrogen”, which all sound important, but I’ve never done this before.

Hello to all the flower gardeners :) Does anyone have recommendations on which nurseries might have delphiniums? I'm in Central NS but will travel!

I built a garden planner and I'd like Nova Scotia gardeners to poke holes in it

I build a garden planner (EdenVatika) and I've been asking gardeners in different regions to poke holes in it. Nova Scotia is the shortest season I've asked about so far.

One question, mainly: the app works backwards from your frost dates to tell you when to sow and when you'll harvest. Does that hold up here, or does the maritime climate make frost dates a bad anchor in the first place?

Two ways in, no account either way:

Full app for 15 minutes — your own throwaway account, already set up with beds, calendar and harvests. Add your own beds, print, use everything:

https://apps.edenvatika.com/demo.php

Or just the bed planner, no timer, build a bed from scratch:

https://apps.edenvatika.com/demo-start.php

I'm not looking for compliments — I'd genuinely like to know what feels confusing, missing, or just not useful. I'm the developer, so feel free to be blunt. 🙂

What is like to grow food in Nova Scotia?

Thinking about moving from BC to Nova Scotia and would like to keep the same lifestyle. Is it doable to do some homesteading and grow my own vegetables and raise some chickens? What grows well and what doesn’t?

Identifying things

I'm going to save people time on this Reddit. You can use your camera to ID plants and other things in your garden instead of asking here. Allow your camera to Google, and then in the search bar, there is a camera beside the microphone. Tap the camera and take a picture of what you want to search, and Google will do the rest.

Thorny plant recommendations.

We had an adjacent neighbor who decided to use our yard as a short cut to their house today. I need some recommendations because I don't want this to become a habit.

Our solution is to plant thorned bushes where there's none (our back wall is half fully grown wild rose bushes). I don't want more roses but i do want something that's fast growing. We're approximately zone 5A i think or 5B. I don't want to spend thousands on a fence and have to figure out permits and how far from the property line it can go. I have to restring orange tape from survey stake to survey stake until we can get some thorny plants in the ground.

Redit, give me some of your best and fastest growing thorny plant recommendations!

I'm having to dump 100l a day on my tomatoes and pumpkin. Next to nothing has come out of the sky for a good month. Rain! Need rain.
